SPARK OF AN IDEA
PEOPLE, NOT
TECHNOLOGY
Chris DeWolfe was born in
December 1965 and grew up in
Portland, Oregon. Both of his
parents were teachers. His father,
Fred DeWolfe, was a historian
who wrote several books about
Portland history. His mother,
Brigitte, taught German at a local
college. Chris and his brother,
Andrew, attended public schools in
Portland. As a high school student,
Chris was a varsity player in both
basketball and tennis and competed
in the state tennis championships
along with his brother.
Chris graduated from high school in 1984.
Although his parents hoped he might follow in
their footsteps and become a teacher, Chris was not
interested. Instead, he majored in finance at the
University of Washington in Seattle. After graduating
in 1988, Chris drifted around the San Francisco Bay
Chris DeWolfe is not a technical
wizard when it comes to Web
sites and the Internet. Instead,
he relies on finding talented
people and building a team,
helping them develop their
talents and optimize their
skills. It was DeWolfe’s circle of
friends who would ultimately
help build MySpace. DeWolfe’s
own MySpace page states,
“I like being around creative
people, funny people, crazy
people.” 1
