About the School<br />
The <strong>Electricity</strong> <strong>Research</strong> <strong>Centre</strong> is located with<strong>in</strong> the UCD School of Electrical,<br />
Electronic & Communications Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g. The School is a highly research<strong>in</strong>tensive<br />
and successful academic unit that is also committed to achiev<strong>in</strong>g<br />
excellence <strong>in</strong> undergraduate and taught graduate programme delivery. Its staff of<br />
15 full-time academic staff <strong>in</strong>cludes 3 IEEE Fellows and two Members of the Royal<br />
Irish Academy. It is housed <strong>in</strong> a spacious and well-equipped modern build<strong>in</strong>g on<br />
the UCD Belfield campus <strong>in</strong> an attractive green environment about 6 km (4 miles)<br />
South of Dubl<strong>in</strong> city centre.<br />
The graduates from the school are renowned for the strength of their analytical<br />
tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the fundamentals of the discipl<strong>in</strong>e and many have achieved great<br />
dist<strong>in</strong>ction <strong>in</strong> companies <strong>in</strong> Ireland and worldwide.<br />

The School considers that is has a unique capability <strong>in</strong> terms of grid <strong>in</strong>tegration of<br />
renewable energy not just <strong>in</strong> Ireland but at a global level. Besides electrical energy<br />
research, the School also has strong research capacity and track-record extend<strong>in</strong>g<br />
over more than 30 years <strong>in</strong> physical layer communications (wireless/optical<br />
systems, non-l<strong>in</strong>ear circuits and control, and signal process<strong>in</strong>g) and <strong>in</strong> biomedical<br />
eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g (neural eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g and biomedical signal process<strong>in</strong>g).<br />
The School has an excellent record of success <strong>in</strong> secur<strong>in</strong>g premier research awards<br />
<strong>in</strong> particular from <strong>in</strong>dustry, Science Foundation Ireland, the Higher Educational<br />
Authority (HEA) and the European Union Framework programmes amongst others.<br />
It also has a very strong record of commercialisation of research and new company<br />
formation, with 5 companies successfully established over the past decade. For<br />
