PENTAVITIN ®
The carbohydrate complex PENTAVITIN ® is highly substantive to skin
and binds moisture like a water magnet. Consequently, PENTAVITIN ® is a
unique ingredient for the regulation and retention of moisture in the skin.
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
PENTAVITIN ® is a patented, highly effective moisturizer containing naturally occurring
carbohydrates. Its composition is very similar to that of the natural carbohydrate fraction
found in the stratum corneum of human skin. PENTAVITIN ® is a highly concentrated
aqueous solution manufactured according to GMP standards. It is the outcome of a
carefully designed process of isomerization of plant-derived D-glucose.
BACKGROUND
Problem dry skin affects millions of people and often causes physical discomfort and
psychological distress. Dry skin also becomes increasingly common with age.
Furthermore, conditions leading to dry skin are constantly on the increase in the modern
living environment. Central heating, air conditioning, travelling by plane, exposure to
detergents and chemicals, and harsh weather conditions all play a detrimental role,
causing the skin to become dehydrated.
Due to its natural structure and composition PENTAVITIN ® acts as a highly effective
moisture regulator resulting in long-lasting water retention in skin. PENTAVITIN ® imparts
its moisture-attracting properties by binding to the free amino groups of lysine in the
keratin of the stratum corneum. This special type of binding leads to a unique
substantivity and affinity to skin. Once bound to the skin surface PENTAVITIN ® cannot
be washed off easily. Therefore the removal of PENTAVITIN ® occurs only by the natural
process of desquamation. The main feature of PENTAVITIN ® , however, is its highly
effective moisture-regulating capability. PENTAVITIN ® 's capacity for long-lasting
moisture binding and moisture retention makes it a true treatment ingredient. For this
reason, PENTAVITIN ® is very effective in dry air under low relative humidities. Under
these conditions there is a particular need for a real functional moisturizer.
PENTAVITIN ® 's unique water-magnet-like action holds water tenaciously and doesn't let
it escape. This unique property distinguishes it from conventional hygroscopic
substances which are unable to function at such low relative humidity levels. On the
contrary, these humectants will draw moisture out of the skin at low relative humidity
levels, which may impart undesired dryness to the skin surface. PENTAVITIN ® is a
choice preventative ingredient to protect dry skin against classical symptoms such as
brittleness, roughness, uneveness, faintness and itching.

EFFICACY
MOISTURE RETENTION
Six women applied creams containing either 5%
of PENTAVITIN ® or 5% of glycerin for 14 days
twice daily on the volar forearm. The moisture
retention capacity was determined by the
Moisture Accumulation Test (MAT). In this
dynamic function test the measuring probe of a
NOVA Meter was left in contact with the skin.
This occlusive treatment results in unbound
water and water diffusing through the skin to
accumulate on the skin surface. A flatter
moisture accumulation curve means greater
moisture-retaining capacity. The figure
demonstrates that PENTAVITIN ® has superior
moisture retention capacity than glycerin.

MOISTURE REGULATION
Test creams containing 1.5% of active
ingredient were evaluated on their moisture
retention efficacy under different relative
humidities at 37°C. Compared with glycerin and
urea, PENTAVITIN ® was shown to exert
favorable moisture regulation especially under
low relative humidities.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
A two-week treatment with a PENTAVITIN ® -containing emulsion improved the hydration
of the skin by 32% on forearm and 40% on calf, respectively. In addition, a combined
fluvography-partial oxygen pressure study also revealed an increase in skin hydration
after a single application. With a sorption-desorption test (SDT) it was found that skin
treated with a PENTAVITIN ® -containing formulation has an excellent moisture binding
capacity. In a lactic acid stinging study PENTAVITIN ® proved to be effective against
irritation caused by AHA-containing products.
CONCLUSION
PENTAVITIN ® is not like other moisturizing agents. Because of its binding properties
PENTAVITIN ® not only moisturizes better and longer, but also remains active under
conditions of low humidity. The water-magnet effect of PENTAVITIN ® is cumulative
during continued use. When included in a formula, moisture remains in the skin long after
conventional moisturizers flash off. PENTAVITIN ® is therefore a most useful ingredient
for top quality moisturizing skin care lines for challenging applications. Problem dry skin,
aging skin, UV exposed skin or xerotic skin in winter are the main targets for
PENTAVITIN ® -containing formulations. PENTAVITIN ® is also suitable for toiletries and
shampoos.

PRESERVATION AND MICROBIOLOGY
PENTAVITIN ® contains no preservative. PENTAVITIN ® is free of specified pathogens.
The amount of non-pathogenic microorganisms with less than 100 CFU per ml of
PENTAVITIN ® meets the CTFA microbiology guidelines. PENTAVITIN ® fulfills the criteria
of the repetitive germ loading test described by Shyam B. Singh-Verma (Parfümerie und
Kosmetik 68(7), 414-421, 1987).
SAFETY AND ECOLOGY
Standard and well-defined safety testing has been performed on PENTAVITIN ® which
has proved the product to be safe for cosmetic use. The data available do not indicate
any environmental risks. The manufacturing process is designed to meet the criteria for
the assessment of safety, health and protection of people and of the environment set out
in the Responsible Care Program.
PROCESSING AND DOSAGE
PENTAVITIN ® can be processed either warm (< 80°C) or cold, and is incorporated into
the aqueous phase of a cosmetic formulation. PENTAVITIN ® is stable in the pH-range of
3 to 6. In formulations, PENTAVITIN ® is compatible with ethanol at concentrations of up
to 60%. For skin care preparations, we recommend the addition of 3 to 6%
PENTAVITIN ® . Basic Guide Formulations are available upon request.
STORAGE AND SHELF LIFE
PENTAVITIN ® should be stored in the original sealed containers protected from light in a
clean place at a temperature between 15 and 25°C. In order to avoid secondary
microbial contamination, following opening, containers should be handled with special
care. If stored under the recommended conditions, PENTAVITIN ® remains stable for at
least three years.
