Shield Mentor Program http://shieldyouth.com (336) 337-2771 SHIELD Mentor Program connects middle and high school youths with a mentor to service them with life-changing experiences that are focused on equipping them with a plan, a task, and a path. SHIELD's long-term goal is to help teens find their purpose in life by identifying their strengths and weaknesses and allowing them to grow and improve in character. Mentoring can take place anytime, including weekends dependant on the availability and schedule between the mentor and mentee. Mentors and mentees will exchange contact information, including email, allowing 24/7 accessibility. TEEN MOM Program—YWCA High Point http://www.ywcahp.com/ProgramYouth.htm (336) 882-4126 The Teen Mom program works with teenage mothers under the age 18, who are pregnant or parenting for the first time. The program aims to strengthen or establish individual support systems and preserve family stability; develop effective parenting skills; and prevention of substantiated child abuse, neglect, or dependency reports. Mentors provide services to pregnant and parenting adolescents which leads to personal self-sufficiency and economic support for themselves. Teen Parent Mentor Program—YWCA Greensboro http://www.ywca.org/greensboro (336) 273-3461 ext. 117 TPMP offers educational activities and programs, the formation of a supportive relationship with an adult mentor, positive peer interactions and staff interventions. This program integrates several critical components: the pursuit of goals including personal, education and career, the development of positive parenting skills, improved access to community services and participation in health, fitness and wellness activities. Monthly meetings and special events are held for both teen moms and their mentors. The MEL Corp—Black Child Development Institute of Greensboro, Inc. http://blackchilddevelopment.org/ (336) 230-2138 The MEL Corp mentoring program matches trained adult volunteers with adolescents. The mentor provides a positive role model, which guides adolescents toward positive life experiences and outcomes. Community Resource Website/Email Phone Description of Services Wise Guys—Family Life Council http://www.wiseguysnc.org/ (336) 333-6890 x237 A program for high school and college age males to train them to become mentors and facilitators for the Wise Guys program, a multisession course for teen males that aims to prevent teen pregnancy and STD's, and to develop healthy relationships. Peer Mentors are male students from local colleges and universities who co-facilitate classes for teen males with Family Life Council Wise Guys Educators. 12. A learning center for children and families which strives to develop productive and emotionally stable boys and girls for the betterment of our society. Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Support Program http://www.senior-resources-guilford.org/ High Point and Jamestown (336) 884-4816 All other areas (336) 373-4816 The Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Support Program is a collaborative effort of Senior Resources of Guilford and the YWCA’s of Greensboro and High Point. The program offers grandparents and other relative caregivers age 55 and over a variety of FREE support options including monthly lunch and learn and support group meetings, quarterly evening support group meetings, resource and referral information and a yearly retreat. Recreation & Extracurricular Activities American Red Cross—High Point/Thomasville Chapter http://hpt.redcross.org (336) 885-9121 Red Cross Youth Club membership is open to all high school students. Clubs meet regularly to work on projects and activities throughout the year. They take on a single project each and support other chapter services, activities, and fundraising events.
