The Botanic Garden is hosting a special
exhibition to celebrate 2011 as the
International Year of Chemistry. Research
scientists at the University of Oxford
Department of Chemistry have designed
posters and self-guided activities to
encourage an interest in plant-based
chemistry, to increase the appreciation of
chemistry in meeting world needs, and to
generate enthusiasm for the creative future
of chemistry.
A change of
name...
At the Friends’ AGM in October it was
agreed to update the Friends’ official
name from ‘The Friends of Oxford
Botanic Garden’ to ‘The Friends of
Oxford Botanic Garden and Harcourt
Arboretum’. The Friends have supported
the Arboretum for many years and we
feel that it is appropriate to reflect this
in our name. The change also supports
the growing emphasis that Garden
and Arboretum staff place on working
collaboratively across the two sites.
International year
of forests lecture
Tony Kirkham
Trees – A cut above the rest
Thursday 24th November, 8.00pm
The talk covers various subjects relating to
the growing of trees in cultivation. It will
remind the audience of where trees come
from, the threats that they face today both
in their natural habitats and in cultivation
and how we must use this knowledge to
help us understand cultivation techniques
such as planting and pruning and keeping
trees stress free.
