Scholarships and Bursaries
Government Bursaries
School Boarding Bursary
A school boarding bursary is awarded to primary or
secondary school students who are obliged to board
away from home in order to receive their education. In
order to qualify, the student must live more than 4.8km
(3.2km for children under the age of 10) away from the
nearest point of embarkation provided by a transport
service to a state school. Most of our successful
applicants qualify under this condition, but others may
be eligible through one of the following: a specified
illness or physical disability; parents working overseas
for the New Zealand Government; those requiring a
special education. This bursary is valued at $2725 per
annum.
Travel Assistance
Pupils receiving a government boarding bursary are also
eligible for travel assistance. The cost of travel at the
beginning and end of each term, in excess of $10, will be
refunded. The amount is based on public transport fares
where such transport is available.
Secondary School Bursaries
Senior College students who wish to study a course not
offered by local high schools and who are obliged to
live away from home, may receive a bursary of $2725
per annum. Where students are pursuing a course
containing subjects at both Year 12 and 13 levels, a
secondary bursary will be awarded only if the student
is taking at least four subjects at one level - i.e. four
nationally-approved National Certificate of Educational
Achievement (NCEA) Level 1, 2 or 3 subjects. Note: in
recent years the Ministry has only approved applications
where students are taking at least two subjects not
available at the local school.
Technical Bursaries
These bursaries of $2725 per annum are awarded to
students in Years 10 and 11 who must live away from
home in order to take a course containing an agriculture
subject or workshop subject not available at their local
school.
Details about all government bursaries are available from Alister Newton, Head of Operations. Application forms will
be issued to students in February and must be returned to Alister Newton by Friday 15 March 2013.
