The Tower of God, that Father Murray built in 1960, still stands proudly at
the center of the Notre Dame campus. Its solid brass doors open to a small
room containing three walls - one each dedicated to the Muslim, Jewish
and Christian faiths. A fourth wall displays great affirmations of world
leaders throughout history.

Father Athol (Père) Murray

The Notre Dame Man
The world today is looking for men and women,
Who are not for sale
Who are honest, sound from centre to circumference,
true to the hearts core,
With consciences as steady as the needle to the pole
Who will stand for the right if the heavens totter and the earth reels
Who can tell the truth and look the world right in the eye
Who neither brag nor run
Who neither flag nor flinch
Who can have courage without shouting it
In whom the courage of everlasting life runs still, deep and strong
Who know their message and tell it
Who know their place and fill it
Who know their business and attend to it
Who will not lie, shirk or dodge
Who are not too lazy to work, nor too proud to be poor
Who are willing to eat what they have earned and wear
what they have paid for
Who are not ashamed to say “No” with emphasis.
God is looking for them. He wants those who can unite together around a common
faith – who can join hands in a common task – and who have come to the
kingdom for such a time as this. God give us such as them.
Not only will they be better prepared to fulfill their duties as a citizen, they
should make a better friend, a better husband, a better father, a better wife, a
better mother, because free people do. They will, in short, be better prepared to
live, and when their hour comes, they will know better how to die because free
people do.
A Brief History of
NOTRE DAME COLLEGE
In 1920, the Sisters of Charity of St. Louis
opened the Notre Dame of the Prairies
Convent and St. Augustine’s residential
elementary and high school for boys and
girls at Wilcox, Saskatchewan, a small
town on the Canadian prairies 49 kilometers
(25 miles) south of Regina, the provincial
capital. In 1927, a new parish priest
arrived—Father Athol Murray—for whom
the college is named today.
In the beginning, the college had no running
water or central heat. In 1930, fees
were just $18 per month, but many students
couldn’t afford to pay. Père (Father)
Murray accepted students on the basis of
their desire for an education, not their
ability to pay. A side of beef, a chicken, a
bucket of coal and produce were often
accepted instead of money. Students came
from everywhere and from every type of
social, cultural and religious background.
the Arts programs. In 1933, Père
Murray succeeded in obtaining
an official affiliation with the
University of Ottawa.
Père Murray believed in the
Greek philosophy of developing
the mind, body and spirit and
envisioned a school that could
develop great scholars and athletes
through equal emphasis on the disciplines
of academics, athletics and
faith. Notre Dame’s long standing
success in developing well-balanced
individuals is a testament to that
vision.
Though Père Murray died in 1975, his
legacy lives on. Père’s beloved Notre
Dame College continues to produce
many of North America’s finest
student athletes through a balanced
program that emphasizes the values
of good character, leadership and
community living. Père’s motto
“Luctor et Emergo” (“Struggle and
Emerge”) is still reinforced today.
Father Murray was assisted by Sister Mary
Edith McCullough. Her teaching career
spanned 30 years at Wilcox. Sister Edith
ran the elementary and high schools
while Père spent most of his time with
Our Guiding Principles
Our Philosophy
Notre Dame is a Catholic residential and coeducational College
dedicated to the primacy of the spiritual in true Christian education.
The program of the College is developed according to the teaching
and the moral and liturgical practice of the Roman Catholic Church.
Its aim is the growth of individuals with deeply rooted personal
values, who are ready to take responsibility for their own lives and
to serve the true needs of our society in Canada and the world. This
aim is achieved through the College’s program of studies and of
religious, cultural and social activities, with a special emphasis on
athletics. It is also reached through the experience of community
life in the College, a life involving both cooperation and competition
in the context of the prairie village of Wilcox.
Founded by Father James Athol Murray under the patronage of the Notre Dame, Our
Lady, the College is Catholic in character, purpose and methods, but it has always been
open to those of other faiths. Long before ecumenism became popular, Notre Dame
was welcoming and encouraging not just Catholics, but all students to seek God, put
their faith in Him and live in accordance with their beliefs. The College of today continues
both Father Murray’s Catholic commitment and his breadth of vision.
Our Vision
That Notre Dame, under the guidance of Almighty God, may serve, in the generations
to come, the highest interests of mankind by drawing into a common fellowship the
members of the faculty and the student body. That the members of Notre Dame may
discover within its walls the true education that is to be found in good fellowship, in
friendly disputation and debate, in the conversation of wise and prudent men and
women, in music, pictures and the play, in the casual book, in sports and games and
the mastery of the body and lastly, that Notre Dame may be dedicated to the task of
arming youth with strength and suppleness of limb, with clarity of mind and depth of
understanding and with a spirit of true religion and high endeavor.
Our Mission
To lead our Hounds to understand that “To him who does what in him lies, God will
not deny his grace.”
To provide, through a nurturing yet spartan environment, parenting modeled on the
Christian family that develops each individual’s spiritual, social, academic and physical
being.
President’s Welcome
“Come on kid, let me tell you what it means to be a
Notre Dame Hound”.
If one could picture Father Athol Murray walking down the
main street of Wilcox, Saskatchewan, one can easily envision
Pere approaching a young student in a gruff, but warm, fatherly
tone welcoming the new student to Notre Dame College.
Father Murray left this earth in 1975 but the Notre Dame that
he built together with the Sisters of Charity of St. Louis remains
with us to this day as it has since its inception in 1920.
Rooted in the Catholic tradition, but open to students of all
faiths, Athol Murray College of Notre Dame puts a strong emphasis
on delivering an education and character formation based on the beliefs and
principles of Christian Humanism. We have a balanced approach as we pay attention
to the development of the mind, the body, and the spirit all within a community environment.
The underlying beliefs that there is a God, that God has revealed Himself to
us in the flesh and the Word and that God wishes to grace us or help us are absolutely
fundamental to life at Notre Dame.
“To Him who does what in Him lies God will not deny His Grace” – the great quote
from St. Augustine of Hippo, not only inspired Father Murray but also is the driving
inspiration that assists our students.
Our students are challenged to achieve with character in all that they do. Father
Murray’s many letters, speeches and lectures have left us with a beautiful little paradigm
in regards to fulfilling this.
ACHIEVEMENT WITH CHARACTER
Place yourself Under God
Take individual initiative.
Take up your enterprise and do it for the community
If possible do it with the community.
Most of all do it with chivalry, with courage, with the right motivation.
We introduce this piece of wisdom to all of our students and even invite our guests,
visitors and parents to ponder this ideal. After all, the College wants all who walk our
grounds, study in our classrooms, engage in our athletic competitions or simply live in
our community, to have what we call the Notre Dame experience.
Our Parent/Student Guide provides a necessary introduction to the Athol Murray
College of Notre Dame. It is my hope that if you aren’t a student that one day you will
join our Notre Dame family and become one of Pere’s Hounds.
God Bless,
Welcome from the Director of Admissions
Dear Hounds:
If this is your first year at Athol Murray College of Notre Dame, we are delighted that
you have chosen to pursue your education at our storied institution. You have just
joined an illustrious family of men and women that stretches back to the 1920s. Many
who have gone before you have achieved the highest accolades in countless endeavors,
due in no small part to the Notre Dame experience.
If you are a returning Hound, we welcome you back to your home away from home.
We hope that you had a restful break and are ready for a productive and successful
year.
Often, we focus on the value that Notre Dame gives to its students. This book will help
you to discover how you can contribute to the community life at Notre Dame. It outlines
the rules and expectations that each student must uphold in order to ensure that
the experience is rewarding for everyone.
Father Athol Murray was fond of quoting St. Augustine’s Confessions where it reads
“To Him who does what in Him lies, God will not deny His Grace”. At Notre Dame, you
will see this phrase posted seemingly everywhere. We believe that simple humans are
capable of extraordinary accomplishments, if they only persevere, develop their talents
and cooperate with God’s Grace.
May God bless you in the coming year.
Ian Morrison
Staying in Touch
Telephones at Notre Dame
Many parents find that telephone calls from Notre Dame to home are the most convenient
and dependable way to communicate - some families set a regular time(s) for
weekly calls. In order for students to have a good night’s sleep without distractions,
dorm phones are shut off at 11:00 p.m. and turned on in the morning at 7 a.m. In the
event of an emergency during the evening, the dormitory House Parent/Assistant
House Parents will contact the student.
Cellular Telephones
The use of cellular telephones is considered a privilege at Notre Dame. Under certain
situations a student may be granted the use of their phone outside of the designated
time. All cell phones are to be used in the dorms. Students must register their cell
phone and telephone number with the College upon arrival.
Cell phones are strictly prohibited during the school day as well as during any ND
function which would include such events as church attendance, movie nights,
coffee houses, guest speakers, award banquets, sporting events, etc.
Students may use their cell phones from after school
until approximately
10:30p.m. during the week and from approximately 1:00p.m. to 11;00p.m. on
weekends (earlier if deemed necessary by residential staff or coaches) .
Students using their cell phones during unauthorized times and outside of their
dorm will have their phones confiscated.
Notre Dame considers traditional cellular telephones and “I phones” or any other
electronic device capable of communicating verbally to be equal.
Settling into the Dorms
Most new students and families arrive in the fall with a host of questions about life in a
boarding school and the necessities of residential living. This section of the Notre
Dame guide contains information to help students become settled in their dormitory.
Dorm Rooms
Standard room furnishings include a desk, chair,
bed (bedding is NOT provided), blinds and a
wastebasket. Each room has a closet for each
individual along with a bureau with drawers.
The closet is to be kept locked at all times.
No modifications may be made in the dormitory
rooms without permission from House Parents.
Students should, however, bring a CSA-approved
desk lamp, power bar, clothes hangers, and an
alarm clock.
The school has a number of storage rooms in which students may store shipping boxes
or items they find little use for after they’ve settled.
Computers & Printers
Students have full access to the library computers
and printer every evening until 9:30 p.m. Many
students also bring their own computers to
school. All computers connecting to our network
must be registered and users are subject to the
conditions of our Acceptable Use Policy. Boarding
students have wireless access in their rooms from
4 p.m. until 9:45 p.m. Sunday through Thursday,
and until 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
Students must have up-to-date virus protection software. Students must provide their
own software, such as Microsoft Office, on personal computers. Printers are available
for students in the computer labs. Students are welcome to bring their own printer
from home, but are expected to purchase their own supplies and handle their own
repairs. Athol Murray College of Notre Dame is not responsible for any repairs or
damages to personal laptops or desktops that may occur while the student is at school.
Getting Away
General Information
Planning time away from Notre Dame involves good planning and communication
between students, parents, house parents, coaches, and the High School Office. Managing
the comings and goings of a large number of adolescents requires the school to
have well-defined procedures. It is particularly important that parents as well as students
become familiar with the school’s policies for securing off-campus permission.
Notre Dame recommends that students remain on campus, so they become enriched
in the traditions and life at Notre Dame. However, weekend leaves are permissible
(two weekends maximum, per semester).
Permissions and Holiday Travel
Parents are required to contact the House Parent by the Wednesday prior to grant the
student permission for a weekend leave. All students must be signed out by their
parent or guardian before they are allowed to leave campus.
B) Leaves requiring permission to be excused from school:
Parents must ask for a leave without academic penalty from the High School Principal.
Parents must also advise the House Parent. Students have one personal day each
semester, allowing the student to be excused from school with parental permission.
Students may be excused from school for specialized medical and urgent or emergency
family reasons. Unapproved leaves will result in the student receiving an academic
penalty for any assignment or tests administered in their absence.
Students are NOT granted special permission for extra travel time at the beginning
and end of the school breaks (Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, and June). English,
math, and Christian Ethics exams are written prior to school breaks. If a student
misses an exam due to an unapproved leave, they will receive a zero on the exam.
Holiday Travel
It is imperative that parents/guardians know that the Notre Dame campus will be
closed for the holidays and year end as noted below. All students, regardless of their
home location are required to leave campus during these periods of time. The earliest
times to book travel prior to our school breaks to avoid an academic penalty are noted
on the chart below. The times indicated allow for travel time to the airport and the
recommended one hour arrival prior to a flight. Notre Dame buses are scheduled for
trips to the Regina International Airport and the Regina Bus Depot for departure times
on the school’s departure days. The cost of this transportation is billed to parents
through student accounts.
Academic Life
The academic program at Notre Dame is the cornerstone of the development of the
complete Notre Dame Hound. Graduates from Notre Dame are regularly accepted at
the top universities in Canada, the United
States, and abroad.
At Notre Dame, our academic strength is
built on the philosophy that all students
benefit from a positive learning environment.
It is more than the delivery of the
curriculum that is important. Our students
excel in an environment that is supportive
and demanding-challenging each student
to strive for growth and understanding in
all academic areas.
A professional, highly educated and highly motivated academic faculty provides students
with an unique learning experience. A positive classroom
environment that challenges students to think and
speak for themselves contributes to their education.
The Notre Dame academic program demands excellence from
students and prepares them to achieve greatness beyond
Notre Dame. The courses offered at Notre Dame are all university
preparatory courses. Notre Dame does offer Advanced
Placement courses to students entering grade 12.
Pre-Advanced Placement (Pre-AP) and Advanced
Placement (AP):
first year university concepts. Students taking AP courses are required to write the AP
exam in May. Students may earn credit or advanced standing at many universities in
Canada and the United States if their AP exam scores meet the post-secondary standard.
The AP program provides students
with valuable preparation for the academic
rigors of university and enhances
their success in the
Lunch hour Assistance
In an effort to increase the success of our students, our teachers are available daily for
lunch hour assistance. Students may drop in and seek help reinforcing classroom concepts,
work quietly on assigned homework, or use the time to catch-up on missed
work.
Shack
Students are assigned to a classroom and teacher, which is their “Shack” for the year.
This time is used as a study period, during which students may work on homework,
receive extra help, or study.
Morning Office Hours
Our teachers will provide further assistance in the morning for students requiring
greater clarity on their lessons. Additional academic support is offered to students
recommended for extra study. The academic staff reviews student performance
monthly and makes recommendations accordingly.
Spiritual Development Department
The roots of Notre Dame’s Spiritual Development department can be traced to the
founders of the school, the Sisters of Charity of St. Louis and Father (Père) Athol
Murray. Father Murray often spoke of the “primacy of the spiritual”. While Catholic in
traditions and teachings Notre Dame College was founded on the ecumenical belief of
“one God”. The attempt is made today to invite our students to explore their relationship
with God and develop their own spiritual self. Notre Dame students are required
to attend Sunday Mass at St. Augustine Parish located on campus. Students are given
the opportunity to participate in the sacraments of the Catholic Church; the Eucharist
at Mass, reconciliation and the sacraments of initiation if desired, Baptism, First Communion
and Confirmation. At Mass students are given the opportunity to assist as
ushers, altar servers and lectors. Students at Notre Dame are required to take Christian
Ethics at each grade level. Each grade devotes a portion of the semester to the
person and teachings of Jesus Christ. Each grade has its own specific focus: CE 9, Salvation
History, CE 10, the Apostles’ Creed, CE 20, the Ten Commandments and CE 30,
Vocations. Throughout the school year, students are given many opportunities to
develop their spiritual being through many uplifting and fun-filled opportunities. Each
each year. The first production, held at Christmas,
features a classic Christmas story. The second
production, in the spring, features a different
story type each year. Auditions are open to all
students, and the majority of rehearsals are held
in the evenings.
Multi Media Club
The Multimedia Club offers opportunities for students to become involved in the
digital world of photography, film, iMovie, yearbook and Gamebreaker (immediate
video analysis tool for coaches). Thousands of digital photographs fill Notre
Dame’s campus boards, webpage photo gallery, the yearbook and iMovie productions.
Students digitally document every activity on campus and take great pride in
being the ‘memory keepers’ of this generation of Hounds and their families. Through
thousands of hours of volunteer work our Multimedia Club
members can be seen with cameras in hand in the arena, on
the fields and in the classroom. Multimedia Club members
earn a Saskatchewan Learning Special Projects credit that is
combined with their academic credit total for graduation.
Students need to complete required skills and earn a
percentage grade.
Notre Dame Hockey Program
Notre Dame is proud to offer a quality hockey experience to both boys and
girls in grades 9 through 12 both on and off the ice. Players are on the ice an
average of four to six times a week for practices and games. Practices are
held on our Olympic size ice surface with our qualified and experienced
coaches. Students are also active with off-ice training utilizing the Maier
Fitness Centre and our certified strength and conditioning
coaches. Furthermore, as part of our hockey development
curriculum, students partake in mental training sessions
on a regular basis. Each one of our teams will compete in
35 - 60 exhibition league, tournament and playoff games
each season.
The Notre Dame hockey program is registered with the
Saskatchewan Hockey Association and Hockey Canada
and, therefore, anyone playing on our teams must be enrolled at the school.
Tryouts for all teams start at the beginning of the school year and team selections
are completed before the Thanksgiving break in early October.
Player evaluations are completed by a group of
coaches/evaluators based on the skills and aptitudes
displayed by players in drills, scrimmages and exhibition
games. Player evaluation is ongoing throughout the
year so that players may be rewarded with the opportunity
to affiliate in games with a team at a higher level.
There is a maximum of 11 teams at the school with roster
sizes varying from 18 to 22 players. As a result it
may not be possible for all students wanting to play
hockey to be placed on a team. Students are responsible
to bring all the necessary safety certified equipment for hockey participation
including a neck guard, red helmet, professionally fitted mouth guard,
red pants and will be required to purchase team socks. Equipment may be
purchased or ordered through the Hound Shop on campus once students
arrive. The College will provide game and practice sweaters.
All students who attend the Athol Murray College of Notre Dame are required
to sign a copy of the following document. Doing so, students acknowledge
its content and agree to meet all expectations to the best of their
ability to become “The Notre Dame Man” that Pére describes in his poem
(page 5 of this Handbook).
The Notre Dame Code
For over 90 years, the students at this school have been building a tradition
of excellence. As a current student, I believe that I can contribute to this
tradition. As a student at Notre Dame, I understand that I am expected to
behave as a person who is ‘honest…who stands for the right…who can tell
the truth…who is not too lazy to work..who can unite around a common
faith…and who can join hands in a common task”. These are but a few of
the ideals that appear in Pére Athol Murray’s poem “The Notre Dame Man”.
As a student at the Athol Murray College of Notre Dame, I will:
Accept responsibility for my education, my decisions and my actions.
Represent my school and all the Hounds that have gone before me with
respect and dignity.
Respect the property of others.
This document is intended to emphasize for each student the importance of
these behaviours. Proper language, respect for others and their property is
very important in a community setting. Students must understand that theft
is a serious offence that destroys our community and will result in a suspension
and possible expulsion. Students must recognize that bullying, harassing
or abusing others is also not tolerated. The use of illegal drugs and/or
the abuse of prescription medication are not permitted and this too will result
in a suspension and possible expulsion. Students who participate in
these activities which lead to the break down of trust and community will be
disciplined.
