PED 2410 CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION IN<br />
PHYSICAL EDUCATION<br />
3 cr<br />
Examines the physical education curriculum at the elementary and secondary levels; emphasizes<br />
strategies for planning effective instruction; explores teaching and learning styles; analyzes effective<br />
behavior management; and examines safety and liability. Prerequisites: PED 1150 and<br />
PED 2420. Spring.<br />
PED 2420 Introduction to Teaching <strong>Physical</strong> <strong>Education</strong> 3 cr<br />
This course gives students the opportunity to discover the science and art of teaching. Students,<br />
through a field-based experience, will observe and reflect upon the act of learning in physical<br />
education at the elementary, and/or secondary levels. The lecture portion of this course will include<br />
a study of the historical, social, and philosophical foundations of contemporary education<br />
and an examination of current educational trends and programs. Areas of study include teaching<br />
as a career, school laws, governance of schools, equitable learning, school problems, basic<br />
teaching strategies, development of an educational philosophy, and an introduction to state and<br />
national standards for students and teachers. Students will complete a minimum of 30 hours in<br />
a supervised classroom setting that involves direct observation and participation. Observation<br />
tools will be used in public school settings to help students recognize factors and skills related<br />
to teaching effectiveness. This field experience is designed to examine and describe the teacher’s<br />
role, school climate, and learner behavior. A law enforcement background check completed at<br />
the student’s expense may be required. Personal transportation is required. Prerequisite: PED<br />
1150 with a minimum grade of C+, or permission of instructor. Fall.<br />
PED 2430 Advanced Scuba 1 cr<br />
This course is conducted using course standards and materials through the Professional Association<br />
of Diving Instructors (PADI). The PADI Adventures in Diving course, which leads to the<br />
Advanced Open Water certification, provides divers with a structured means to explore special<br />
diving interests and gain dive experience. This program allows student divers to customize their<br />
training path and learn various underwater skills that broaden their awareness of the environment<br />
and their capabilities as divers. Students are assessed by demonstrating that they meet measurable<br />
learning objectives through the concept of performance-based learning. The course combines<br />
classroom, pool, and open-water participation to successfully meet certification requirements.<br />
Other topics in the course include diver safety, the aquatic environment, health for diving, programming,<br />
teamwork, presentation skills, and research projects. Students will learn about the<br />
many career opportunities that are available in the dive industry. Fee: $400. Fall y, Spring x<br />
PED 2390 Coaching Football 3 cr<br />
This course is designed to develop knowledge in the many aspects of coaching football. Included<br />
are offensive and defensive positions, stances, job descriptions, formations, schemes, play calling,<br />
fronts, coverages, blitzes and stunts. Students learn to use self-scout and opponent video<br />
breakdown analysis as it is used for practice and game planning. The terminology, philosophy,<br />
strategy, and rules of football are emphasized. Spring.<br />
PED 2440 Health and Lifestyle Coaching 3 cr<br />
If you could change one thing in your life, what would it be This course will move you forward<br />
in a simple, step by step, fail-safe approach toward even more life fulfillment and healthy living,<br />
with the assistance of a certified “circle of life coach” and guidebook. Being a part of this group<br />
allows you to come up with better ideas to solve roadblocks, provide the motivation to persist<br />
with the goals you set for yourself and pursue and attain even bigger dreams. Students will be<br />
exposed to the exploding field of “lifestyle coaching.” Periodically.
