Welcome again to all members, enjoy this current issue
Inside you will find some news from the latest Committee meeting and also from the very successful
information night at the Clubhouse held on June 27 th , this was one of the most informative and well
presented evenings held at our Club and the attendance of one hundred and twenty members on a very
wintry night was a clear indication of the interest in improving our Clubhouse. Read the details within this
newsletter and also have a close look at the various plans and models around the Clubhouse for your
information.
We want this publication to be a service to you so please contribute.
The Editor
House and Social News.
Early in June the Trivia Night was a great success, some say
outstanding and our co-editor Sandy Hazelbrook was full of
praise for all who worked hard to make it such a success. In his
words “ Oh what an interlocutor, President Rob Riordan
hosted the show and did a fantastic job. With repartee to match
his wit he undertook an almost impossible job handling the
sometimes unruly interjectors but performed this with complete
aplomb.” Ably assisting were Connie and Ron Albany,
Trish Thompson, Pauline Morant, Lynn Wells and many others
who assisted most diligently. Prizes went to the Power table,
second place to the Park table and then to the Hazelbrook table.
Next time a Trivia Night is arranged make up a table of your
most intelligent friends and join in, its great fun.
The next event to be organized by the House and Social group
is a Comedy Night on August 18 th with Dave Grant as the
guest comedian, this will be sold out quickly as this is a very
popular format so make your booking NOW or as soon as
possible at the office. Notices will be posted around the
Clubhouse as the date nears.
Further ahead, on September 29 th a combination Floor Show
and Dinner Dance is planned and on the 3 rd of November
following the Club Championships a Presentation Night and
Dinner is planned. Details of these and other events will be
made available when plans are finalized.
The Gisborne Golf Club Newsletter
Letter to Members from Club President, Mr. Rob Riordan.
The information night held on June 27 was attended by well over 100
members on a very cold and wet winter’s night.
After almost two years of work, Committee presented detailed information on what can be done to
improve the Club-house facilities, also a 5 year plan for the continuing improvement of our course, and
the options regarding financing such projects.
According to a show of hands, the vast majority of those present want committee to finalise the plans and
call a special general meeting to be held in coming months.
Some of the information presented is on display in the club-house for you to examine.
One option put forward to help finance the projects and reduce the amount that would need to be
borrowed was to offer members the opportunity to pre pay their annual subscriptions for 5 years. Once
again there was very strong support from those present.
July 5 th marks the 60 th anniversary of the official opening of our course on this site.
We have marked July 7 as our day of celebration with a ceremony commencing 11:30 AM and a party in
the club-house in the evening.
Happy 60 th birthday and good golfing.
Sincerely
Rob Riordan
Finance Report to Members, June 2007
The financial position of the Club is in excess of budget expectations for the year to date.
Member subscriptions are now ahead of budget primarily due to a surge of more than 50 new members
joining the Club in the first three months of the year. Green fees income has similarly moved ahead of
budget although recent bad weather may have a dampening effect. Function and catering profit is below
expectations due to limited demand. Most expenses are below budget expectations, an exception being
Course Match and Day greens News maintenance where the cost of Fungicides and Herbicides to tackle conditions arising
from All the the regular prolonged weekly drought results are has available been greater on the than Club expected. website or on the results board in the Clubhouse so we will
concentrate on the special events which are current.

successful day.
Around other Courses
Cobram 2007 Seniors Tournament
The third Cobram Seniors Tournament was held in May,with six couples from Gisborne traveling to
contest this event. The main event is a 72 hole stroke competition run over three days for players with a
handicap to 18 while others with a higher handicap play a stableford event. The Gisborne players fared
well with Ron Albany winning a B grade scratch event, Connie Albany placing second in an A grade
event and John Kennedy finishing in third place in a C grade event.
A Dinner and Presentation Night concluded the tournament with some two hundred people in attendance.
Lancefield Open was held on May 27 th , on a very windy day golfers from Gisborne did very well with
Martin Cunningham winning the B grade nett, Adrian Magazzu winning the best nine holes. Connie
Albany won the inaugural event for Ladies. Congratulations to all our touring players
. ………………………………………………..
Snippet. Patrick Bell and his playing partner several Saturdays past, won the first nine in the battle with their
companions for the lotto ticket with 22 points for that nine, Patrick had 20 of those points and later remarked “if I
had to carry that big fellow any further I would have broken my back”. Big Bob -two points for nine- hope you got
better as the day progressed
John Robinson, Life Member and former Captain of the Club, Committee member and a great
organizer of social activities has returned to Gisborne for this weekends celebration of our 60 th year
at this site. Robbo is currently living in Edenhope looking after his aged mother in her retirement
years. Robbo moved to Edenhope where he plays pennant golf, manages the junior pennant team,
teaches junior tennis and very ably assists around the Edenhope Club.
His mother Dorothy who has been Lady President at Medway, played off a low handicap and was
still playing golf at 90 years of age, albeit with a cart. She recently suffered a fall which had seen her
hospitalized but she is now home again and being well cared for by her attentive son. All the best to
you and your family and welcome back for this occasion Robbo, we hope to see more of you as your
time permits.

From our Club Manager
With our 60 th birthday celebrations almost upon us, it is an appropriate time to look back and reflect
how far the club has advanced. On land that was considered too harsh to run sheep, it is amazing to
see the magnificent transformation into beautiful course we have today, one which is arguably the best
in the North West of Melbourne.
There are so many people who have contributed significantly over the years, starting with the Brady
Family who originally owned the land. Obviously there are too many people to start thanking individually,
but one thing is for sure - that our club would not be in the position it is today without the tireless work of
our volunteers, both past and present. We can attribute our healthy financial situation to these
volunteers who have helped save thousands of dollars and to Finance Committees which have kept a
scrupulous rein on the dollars. It is also worthy to note and thank members who are tradesmen and
donate time, and in many cases, secure goods at cost prices.
It is also extremely exciting to look forward. With the advent of a possible 120 new homes adjoining
our property and its potential for new members, the proposed upgrading of our clubhouse facilities to
match our course, and continuing on with the growth of our annual ProAm and Victorian Corporate
Championship, all augurs well for the club's future.
I am also happy to advise that a new Championship will be held on Sunday, 9 th December, 2007 - the Inaugural
Social Clubs Championship. This event will see four representatives from each Social Club compete in a
teams' event to decide the Social Club Champions of the Year. Country Club Tasmania and Harvey
World Travel-Essendon will combine as co Major Sponsors of this year's event by providing the major
prize for the winning team - a weekend at Country Club Tasmania, Launceston including return airfares
courtesy of Harvey World Travel Essendon, deluxe accommodation, a round of golf and buffet breakfast.
Di Fisher
Ray Keane, the former Course Superintendent of this Golf Club for many years and very well
respected and admired for his ceaseless work and dedication to the Club has written a book
outlining the history and background of this wonderful facility, our Club. As Ray has been
responsible for such a huge amount of the establishment and nurturing of the course proper, and
in working with many different Committees and members, there is no better source of
information needed to produce such a record as his memories and records, and what Ray may not
have had he most certainly has known who to ask or where to look.
Please purchase a copy of this book at the Celebration of our anniversary on Saturday 7 th July and
ask Ray to sign it for you , one day this will be a priceless memento of our history and right now
a good and informative read.
Clubhouse Market on Saturday August 4 th .
The Clubhouse has an accumulation of unused and out of service and superfluous equipment, fittings and items,
some old golf gear from the store, which we can no longer use for some reason. The old TV set for example, the
unused piano in the old Spike Bar and a lot of other items which we will display in the Spike Bar and offer for
sale or disposal on Saturday 4 th August. We will add to the market day if you have anything to donate which may
bring a little income to the Club, see Gareth or Di or Bill Willis. The piano is not a pianola but is very friendly
and looking for a new home.

Rules advice from Paul Barlow, an accredited VGA rules official and member of the GGC
The drought has hopefully broken, so it may be now appropriate to talk about
CASUAL WATER and how it affects us on the golf course.
Casual Water is defined as any temporary accumulation of water on the course that is visible
before or after taking your stance (and is not in a water hazard)
You cannot jump up and down to produce casual water.
Soft, mushy earth is not casual water
Dew and frost are not casual water. Therefore you cannot brush or wipe dew or frost off your
line of play or your putting line
Snow and ice can be either casual water or loose impediment at the player’s option.
Casual Water is an abnormal ground condition and is covered under rule 25.
Relief. , .
a) Through the green. The nearest point of relief (NPR) that is not nearer the hole
(NNH) is selected and then drop within one club length of this point. This is a free
drop.
b) In a bunker. As above but drop must be in the bunker. Where total relief is not
available then a point is selected (NNH) that affords the best relief available. In
addition under penalty of one stroke the ball may be dropped outside the bunker,
keeping the spot where the ball lay between you and the hole. There is no limit to how far back
you can go.
c) On the putting green. Lift and PLACE the ball at the nearest point of relief that is NNH or
where maximum available relief is and NNH.
The NPR does not necessarily have to be on the green. A situation could arise where
the NPR that is NNH on a partly flooded green is OFF the green and in the rough!
A ball can be lost in casual water and free relief is available. However there must be
reasonable evidence of the ball being lost. Just because you see a splash and can't find your
ball, is NOT reasonable evidence that your ball is lost in casual water.
If your ball is lost in casual water, the point where it lies is deemed to be the point where it last
crossed the margin of the casual water.
Good Luck
One of our long term employees and friends, Zoe Macdonald who has worked in the kitchen and the
bar has left the Club after eight years to concentrate on her work in the Social system with young
children, work which is very demanding of her time and very important in her life. We will miss you
Zoe and we wish you all the best of good fortune in your career

Greens Committee Report
Gisborne Golf Club Newsletter
6
As we get into winter it will be necessary for us to have several areas roped off to spread the wear as turf
recovery is very slow. You will have noticed the black covers on the practice green and on the 4 th hole.
These areas have suffered some disease damage from Pythium, which has proved very hard to control
because of the extended water requirements and a lack of good rain to flush the root zone. The areas
affected have been sown with Bent grass and the covers will help the seed to germinate as the weather
gets cooler.
The pine trees that have been removed on the 8 th and the 15 th have allowed the tee areas to be more usable
and give the player the opportunity to take on the trees, This was how the hole was originally designed, a
good golf hole is one that gives a player options and offers risks and rewards. More tree work is
scheduled over the winter months, removing the regimented lines of pine trees and improving the light
penetration and intensity on fairways is one area of focus. Replanting these areas with more appropriate
species that have less invasive roots and provide a contrast of color is our objective.
The creek area on the 10 th hole will be transformed into a wetland area to help filter the creek, prevent
erosion and define the hazard area. These plants will take some time to establish but will improve the
aesthetics of the hole.
Now we have the usual rains expected in Gisborne we can define the areas which need improved
drainage, notably the 6 th fairway and green.
Resurfacing of pathways is a priority this winter, the Lilydale toppings are successful but they stick to
buggy tyres and get carried to the tee areas where the small stones can be a damaging factor to our mower
blades. Please keep buggies off tees.
We have a new John Deere tractor to replace the old Ford, which was unable to perform adequately due
to age and equipment.
The information night on the 27 th June gave us the opportunity to outline our plans for the next 5 years
and the displays in the Clubhouse will show some of the works planned, particularly the 12 th hole and the
relativity to the surrounding holes
Bernie Morrison and Craig Evans
Remember the Holden Scramble is coming up quickly so get your team together and make
your entry soon. If you need to revisit the format and the rule changes for this year, see Mick
or James in the Pro-Shop
From Saturday 7 th our new beer supply system will be in operation, so check out the quality and the new
fittings, very impressive. While we are talking about refreshments, Anne in the kitchen has made some
very tasty changes to the available fare, soups and fresh rolls etc are very welcome this time of the year so
try the new menu. Thank you Anne, well done
Every Monday morning two Lady members of this Club come to the Clubhouse for the sole
purpose of cleaning the surrounds , under the verandas and in the garden beds. They do this
because they love their Club and they do it voluntarily. But their task is made more difficult and
dirty and onerous when cigarette butts, waste packages, bottles, cans and other items have been
carelessly and untidily left laying about. Please use bins or receptacles for all waste and do not
litter your grounds because your friends and fellow members are cleaning up after you. If you
need a bin…ask at the bar or office. PLEASE

Meet your fellow member………… Suzanne Heffernan
Suzanne in the front of the picture, with some of her golf team-mates
Sue was born in Terang, Victoria and with her father a country bank manager there was a lot of moving
about as a youngster which almost certainly developed a love of life out of the city. With two brothers
who played scratch golf at Warrnambool, Sue may have started golf much sooner than she did but
basketball and squash filled most of her early years. Living in the bush did not mean liking everything
about it, living on a dairy for some years did not develop an affection for cows, milk or anything
associated with a dairy which is surely one of the most persistent jobs on earth.
Suzanne loves her golf and is good to play with, she is a good cook and likes good food, likes people of
straightforward character who speak openly. Sue’s partner Adrian is not too well at the moment and Sue
is looking after him with great care. One her sporting icons is our own Bill Howard and Sue did see both
of his great wins at Stawell, I have learned that she likes fast cars, dogs, red wine and good company so
you will always enjoy a game of golf with Sue. Remember though that she was personally blessed by
Pope John Paul 11 at St. Andrews hospital some time ago so she may have formidable golf assistance
available!!!! Nice to know you Suzanne, play well.
