NATIONAL HONORS<br />

The American <strong>Library</strong> <strong>Association</strong> has<br />

listed Mitchell Memorial <strong>Library</strong>’s personalized<br />

library service as an “innovative<br />

Web-based reference service.” Available<br />

at My<strong>Library</strong> via library.msstate.edu, the<br />

customizable service “allows the user to<br />

create a portable Web page using<br />

resources of the MSU Libraries,” said<br />

system administrator Stephen H. Cunetto.<br />

ALA awards this special designation to<br />

locally developed sites that provide a<br />

completely new service to users, are publicly<br />

available, and require no user fee.<br />

SLIS OPENS LISTSERV FOR<br />

THE LIBRARY COMMUNITY<br />

The University of Southern <strong>Mississippi</strong><br />

School of <strong>Library</strong> and Information Science<br />

has launched a new listserv as a<br />

method for the library community to have<br />

more contact with the School of <strong>Library</strong><br />

and Information Science and to discuss<br />

topics of special interest. Now open to<br />

subscribers, the initial topic is “What<br />

skills do you believe an entry level (new)<br />

librarian should possess when he or she<br />

graduates from the master’s of library and<br />

NEW LIBRARY<br />

BREAKS GROUND<br />

The Jackson-George Regional <strong>Library</strong><br />

System celebrated the construction of the<br />

new Ina Thompson Moss Point <strong>Library</strong><br />

with a ground-breaking ceremony last<br />

August at the old M & M Bank building<br />

in Moss Point. A key part of funding the<br />

library project was the $500,000 donation<br />

by the Thompson foundation, which<br />

may be the largest foundation gift ever to<br />

a public library in <strong>Mississippi</strong>.<br />

Tracy Englert, Catalog Librarian at<br />

the University of Southern <strong>Mississippi</strong>,<br />

has been selected as a participant in the<br />

<strong>Library</strong> Administration and Management<br />

<strong>Association</strong>’s (LAMA) “Leaders of the<br />

Pack” mentor project. This three-year<br />

project gives ten participants an opportunity<br />

to develop skills while contributing to<br />

LAMA’s commitment to outstanding programs,<br />

life-long learning, and leadership<br />

development for library administrators<br />

and managers.<br />

the new Head of Special Collections at<br />

<strong>Library</strong> director Stella Wheat recently<br />

retired as director of the Lamar County<br />

<strong>Library</strong> System.<br />

Four new employees have joined <strong>Mississippi</strong><br />

State University Libraries. Jessica<br />

Buehring is Assistant Professor/Science<br />

Reference Librarian; Robert<br />

Fowler is Assistant Professor/Monographic<br />

Cataloger; Moira Bowen is<br />

Assistant Professor/Assistant Collection<br />

Development Officer; and Karen<br />

Davidson is Assistant Professor/Government<br />

Documents/Reference Librarian.<br />

Lawhon Elementary School librarian<br />

Janice Garrett was honored as a Tupelo<br />

Public School District “Teacher of Distinction”<br />

in October. This annual award<br />

goes to the 10 most outstanding teachers<br />

in the district. She was awarded a trophy<br />

and a substantial cash award.<br />

Jan Condren is the new Assistant<br />

Branch Librarian at the M.R.Davis Public<br />

<strong>Library</strong> in Southaven. Jan received her<br />

undergraduate degree from Indiana University,<br />

and her Master of Sciences in<br />

<strong>Library</strong> Science from the University of Illinois,<br />

Urbana-Champagne. Jan was<br />

employed by the Memphis and Shelby<br />

County Public <strong>Library</strong> system for over 16<br />

years, working at the Poplar-White Station<br />

branch and various departments at<br />

the Main <strong>Library</strong>. Jan has been with First<br />

Regional <strong>Library</strong> since October.<br />

On hand for the “Building for our Community” ground-breaking ceremony were Jackson county supervisor<br />

Tim Broussard, supervisor Robert Norvel, Moss Point alderman Tommy Hightower, alderman John Welch,<br />

Moss Point library manager Carol Hewlett, supervisor Manly Barton, Moss Point vice-mayor John McKinney,<br />

Moss Point mayor Frank Lynn, <strong>Library</strong> System director Robert Willits, and Dr. Karl Horn, M. Ina<br />

Thompson Foundation charter member.
