VA Secretary Discusses Challenges
To Veterans Community
By PDC Michael Winnick
NSO Director
Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs, General Eric Shinseki,
addressed delegates at the 116th Annual National Convention.
Gen. Eric Shinseki, Secretary of
Veterans Affairs, attended JWV’s
116th National Convention to
discuss the progress made at the
Department of Veterans Affairs
during his tenure and address the
current challenges facing the veterans’
community.
He also acknowledged two of
our members who attended The
U.S. Military Academy at West
Point with him, Mike Leibowitz,
Post 972 and Lew Green, Post 266.
He explained the buildup of troops
in Vietnam from 16,000 American
troops in April 1965 to 540,000 in
two years, and noted that they were
youngsters who “grew up fast.”
On Jewish War Veterans, he reminded
us that we were the only
veterans group to march alongside
Dr. Martin Luther King in 1963
and recognized our commitment
to the next generation through our
“unwavering” support of the Boy
Scouts of America and our college
scholarship funds.
Secretary Shinseki emphasized
that the VA budget has increased
for the past 3 years. In 2010 the
President increased the VA budget
to $115 billion, a 16% increase
over the 2009 budget. The 2011
budget grew to $126.6 billion and
the current Presidential request before
Congress is for $132.2 billion
for FY 2012.
In that time, the new post-9/11
GI Bill has been implemented,
sending 173,000 veterans to college
in the fall of 2009. That number
has risen to 518,000 veterans
and family members attending college
this year, and the program will
soon be expanded to provide vocational
and non-degree job training.
Memorial to Jewish Military Chaplains
On October 24th, a memorial to
commemorate Jewish military
chaplains who died while on active
duty will be dedicated in Arlington
National Cemetery.
The tremendous effort to create
this special tribute to Jewish
Chaplains was originally the idea
of Ken Kraetzer of the Sons of the
American Legion. Mr. Kraetzer
has worked tirelessly and effectively
to clear the many buracratic,
administrative, and even legislative
hurdles to gaining full approval
for this memorial.
During JWV’s Capitol Hill
Action Day this past March, our
National Executive Committee
included this issue when meeting
Your LETTERS
In Memory
I just received your email regarding the
American Jewish Community will dedicate at
Arlington National Cemetery a congressionally
mandated memorial to Jewish Chaplains who
died in service to our country finally uniting
their names to the names of the Protestant and
Roman Catholic chaplains who perished.
I am a blinded Vietnam veteran who was
aided to a great degree by the Jewish chaplain
who was stationed at Fort Leonardwood in
1968. I cherish that memory to this day. One of
the major tragedies of that war was learning after
I arrived in Vietnam myself, and tried to get
in touch with him, that he died in a helicopter
crash. One of my open wounds is that after my
injury, I could not remember his name and have
been unable to identify him through channels.
It has always been my desire to let his family
know how much he meant to me, and how
saddened I was to learn of his untimely death.
Now, thanks to the list you have provided, I
believe I have discovered who that rabbi was:
Harold Singer, October 25, 1936-December 17,
1968. If he was, indeed, the Rabbi stationed at
Fort Leonardwood, MO, in 1968, I would greatly
appreciate the opportunity to wish his family
deepest condolences. Please let me know
if there is anything else I can do to honor the
memory of this most cherished Rabbi.
Sincerely,
Art Melworm
JWV Post 603
Iraq or Afghanistan - to keep you and I and all
Americans free. And the descendants of African-
Americans who have fought and died from being
slaughtered at Fort Wagner during the Civil
War through the Tuskegee Airman whose fighter
planes protected our bombers over the skies
of occupied Europe during WW11.
Bottom line: A Jewish student would be
as disgusted and angry at being forced to read
“KIKE,” as an African-American student would
be to read “NIGGER”.
Respectfully,
Daryl Ames
Thank You
Dear Stephen Zeitz,
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you
for your contribution to the National Museum
of American Jewish Military History in honor
of my mother, Amanda Ros. I was truly moved
as I recieved notice of your generous donation
to this organization in memory of my mother.
My mom was a truly unique individual with a
generous heart. She was a loving caretaker to
her husband, grandchildren, and relatives in
their time of need. She would be pleased to
know her passing has inspired many to donate
to a worthy cause for honoring and memorializing
Jewish participation in America’s defense.
``Thank you again, Stephen, for caring and
donation.
Dear Mr. Richardson,
I would like to thank you for the copy of the
Five Books of Moses that you and the Jewish
War Veterans of the USA sent me. Guam is a
difficult place to obtain Jewish literature, so the
arrival of the English-language Torah was fully
appreciated. Thank you for your generosity and
your service.
Fair wishes and following seas,
USCG Damage Controlman, 2nd Class
Dear Herb,
After our short conversation, it occured to me
that I wanted to thank you for having helped
VA’s National Chaplain Center to increase out
staffing for a Jewish chaplain several years ago.
The increase was very much needed and I’m
certain it could not have happened without you
and Chaplain Kobrinetz working to correct the
shortage.
Since you will see Chaplain Kobrinetz next
month, please give him my best regards. We
miss him in VA and are so happy to know that
he is doing well. His illustrious service to Va is
not forgotten.
Thank you very much for your bombshell info
re Mark Twain’s ant-Semitic article.
Dear Ms. Westley,
I could not disagree more with your contention
I just wanted to thank you and Mike Rugel so
that public school children should read much for your time and efforts regarding arrange-
literature containing the “N” word. Your reasons
ments to show the DVD regarding K Company
(that’s history, etc., etc.) could also apply and their actions on Guadalcanal. It is greatly
to Jews, as well.
appreciated. My father never talked much about
Please let me explain once again: If American his experiences on the island. However, from
Jewish citizens took violent exception to Mark time to time, he would mention his long life
Twain’s use of anti-Semitic terminology, why friend Bill Sager, as well as 2nd Lieutenants Joe
shouldn’t African-American people likewise resent
Terzi and Phil Hilheit, who were both tragically
the use of the “N” word.
killed later at Cape Gloucester. My father said
I teach 9th grade students, the majority are there were many heroes on Guadalcanal that
MESSAGE
FROM THE COMMANDER
National Commander Allen E.Falk
On August 12, 2011, I was elected as National
Commander at the 116th Annual National
Convention of the JWV of the USA.
I am very thankful to all the convention delegates
for placing their faith in me for this position.
The National Commander is responsible
for preserving the honor and reputation of JWV.
It was 116 years ago that our Founders first
set forth the purpose of our organization. They
appreciated the equality and opportunities the
young nation of America offered to the Jewish
community. They were very willing to endure
the sacrifies of military service to help preserve
these freedoms. It is the dedication of our
founders that inspire us today.
We are all aware that the coming year presents
many challenges to JWV. The dwindling
pool of veteran recruits and the poor economy
may make it difficult to maintain our current
level of activites.
I am confident, however, that JWV will
meet these challenges. I believe the key to success
will be in our ability to work together and
put in a little more effort at every echelon level.
The team of National Chief of Staff Mike
Liebowitz, Natioanl Judge Advocate Allen
Cornblatt, and I look forward to working with
all of you this year.
Our theme is: Unity Brings Progress!
JWV Chief of staff Michael Leibowitz, left, National
Commander Allen Falk, and JWV’s National Judge
Advocate Alan Cornblatt, attended the viewing of
NEWS
FROM CAPITOL HILL
By Herb Rosenbleeth
Colonel, U.S. Army(Ret)
National Executive Director
THE FEDERAL BUDGET DEFICIT WILL HIT $1.28 TRILLION THIS YEAR
“The United States is facing profound economic challenges...” Congressional Budget Office Report
During the next year, the Congress will be battling
over how to best slice away huge amounts
of U.S. debt. No matter how the budget process
plays out, neither veterans nor the military
will receive the funding they will really need.
Federal government spending is going to be reduced
and both veterans and the military are going
to be severely affected.
We have much to do. Number one is to insure
that our nation’s veterans receive adequate,
accessible, and timely health care. This includes
keeping the doors of VA facilities open
to Category 7 and 8 veterans. This includes long
term care for our aging veteran population. This
includes affordable prescriptions, sufficient rehabilitation
services, and, probably most important,
health care and service for the seriously
wounded returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.
These are the wages of war that our government
owes to its veterans.
How do we protect veterans now and in the
future One approach is to learn from the past.
To remember how returning veterans, especially
those from Vietnam, were treated. The homecoming
for these veterans was certainly not a
warm one. And, those who served in Korea are
still struggling to obtain the respect and recognition
that was denied them some five decades
ago. Veterans of the conflict in Korea are known
as the forgotten veterans. It is our job to help
them be remembered and cared for.
All veterans gave their liberty, at least temporarily,
so the citizens of this country could
continue to enjoy theirs. The country, particularly
Congress, should realize that the warriors’
homecoming has not been as generous as it
should have been.
We in the VSO’s must constantly remind our
Members of Congress that, in addition to necessary
medical treatment, compensation and pensions,
veterans want respect and understanding
from the society that sent them to battle.
JWV is equally concerned about proposed
cuts involving our active duty personnel,
National Guard and Reservists, and their families.
Following the Gulf War, during the 1990’s,
the military took the brunt of the so-called peace
divident. Our military capability was severely,
actually dangerously, reduced.
Reduction to our military capability, as envisioned
by many in the administration and the
congress, will undermine defense policy and result
in risks overseas and at home. Our history
is replete with examples of an America ill prepared
to defend itself or its vital interests.
Former Speaker of the House, Tip O’Neil,
said, “All politics is local.” As veterans, as patriots,
we need to repeatedly speak out in our
communities. We need to continually communicate
with our Members of Congress.
Dispatches FROM THE EDITOR
A few weeks ago, I attended a training session
conducted by the New Jersey Department of
Homeland Security, FEMA, and the FBI. The
session was intended to develop skills in terrorist
detection and to review protocols in case of
natural emergencies.
At the JWV’s National Convention, I made
a presentation regarding these issues. But it is
not enough to talk to thirty comrades. I do not
consider this to be getting the word out. The
best way to reach all comrades is through our
Jewish Veteran publication, so here goes.
Security since 9-11 has been strengthened
to the point that terrorists would have difficulty
penetrating the security ring. The biggest concerns
for Homeland Security and the FBI are
soft targets, such as malls, entertainment facilities,
hotels, and restaurants. In these locations,
security can be less professional or non-existent.
Speakers at the training session stressed the
fact that civilians are the most important front
line defense against attacks. Everyday detection
is bottom up. Preventing terrorism is a
community effort. By learning what to look
for, we can make a positive contribution in the
fight against terrorism. If you see something,
tell a police officer. The partnership between
the community members and law enforcement
is essential.
Some of the activities that look innocent but
occur in certain locations, or at specific times of
day, may actually be important and suspicious.
What should you consider suspicious
Individual Appearance
It is important to remember that just because
someone looks or dresses differently, has different
beliefs, speaks differently, or has a different
way of life, does not mean that he or she is suspicious.
There are other indictors.
• Person missing hand/fingers
• Person with chemical burns, strange
odors or bright colored stains on clothing
• Person wearing backpacks or heavy
coats or bulky clothing when the weather
is warm
• Person dropping a package such as backpacks,
briefcases, or boxes and walking
away
Individual Activities
• Person using or carrying video/camera
equipment over an extended period,
near public building or in normally restricted
area
By PNC Paul Bernstein, National Editor
• Persons parking, standing, or loitering
in the same area over an extended period
of time
• Person interested in surveillance assets
such as CCTV, alarms, doors, and gates
• Person note-taking and making time
checks when security personnel are on
patrol
• Several men arriving together then splitting
up, continuing to communicate by
cell phone
Do not jeopardize your safety or the
safety of others; contact law enforcement
agents. As veterans, who else is better
trained to observe We all did it while in
service, and now we can aid in our country’s
defense once again.
The second part of the session covered
FEMA and protecting yourself during a natural
emergency.
Earthquakes and Tornadoes
With regard to tornadoes, go to the lowest level
of the house, such as the basement. If you don’t
have access to a basement, go to the bathroom
and climb in the tub. The second best option is
to enter an interior closet and fall to the floor.
Be sure to stay away from the windows and
cover yourself with blankets.
If outdoors, stay low and get into a ditch
or culvert. Drop to the ground face down and
cover your head. In a car, get out and get into a
roadside ditch and stay low.
With regard to earthquakes, drop to the floor
and cover your head and neck with your arms.
If possible, take cover under a solid piece of furniture
or next to an interior wall. Hold on to
a sturdy piece of furniture and be prepared to
move with it.
Hurricanes and Thunderstorms
In the event of a storm, secure outdoor objects
such as lawn furniture or garbage cans. Shutter
or board all windows before storms. Avoid
handling metal, electrical equipment and telephones.
Do not use water faucets, as lighting
can follow wires and pipes. Take cover in a
building.
If you are caught outside, squat low to the
ground and make yourself the smallest target
possible. Do not lie flat on the ground, and do
not take cover under trees.
WHAT EVERY HOME DISASTER KIT
Commentary
By PNC Robert M. Zweiman, Chairman, Coordinating Committee
Convolution and/or Revolution
Don’t let anyone kid you; $14 trillion is a hell
of a lot of money. Frankly, as a debt, it’s a monstrous
amount of money to owe. Candidly, it’s
a nonsensical amount, almost fictional and beyond
most peoples’ comprehension.
When they said that the United States owed
that sort of money, most of us thought that we
owed it all to China - the home of America’s
industry. Turns out that we only owe them an
insignificant $1.2 trillion. Really not enough to
worry about.
Matter of fact, the last “bipartisan” deal [a
sell–out] made to raise the debt limit now seems
absurdly insignificant. The next part of that deal
consists of a phony Congressional Committee
with half of its members pledged not to raise
taxes or any form of revenue having the appearance
of taxes [i.e. loophole elimination!]
We can look forward to a better bipartisan
death mask artistically formed with a diseased
compassionate eye eliminating or reducing veterans’
benefits, military retirement benefits, social
security, Medicare and other citizen benefits
from the budget. We may end up with a vulture
in the place of the eagle as our national bird.
With Mother Nature’s visitations of floods,
tornadoes, hurricanes on our country, those
Ruthless Budget Slashers have proclaimed that
no disaster aid can be given without cutting a
compensating equal amount from other benefits.
No ticket, no shirt.
Many of our citizens in those disaster areas
in desperate need are totally disgusted with the
unavailability of FEMA and other funding and
are looking to Congress to provide those monies.
They appear to be at the point of competing
for U.S. dollars with overseas transfers and are
desperate enough to take to the streets adopting
the North African and Middle East lines of attack
by forcing recognition through riots and
revolution.
The Congress is stupidly playing with a
loaded pistol and how many can they figure will
be standing able to come for the Shiva Time
is starting to run out for political posturing. The
Boston Tea Party was just a beginning to the
American Revolution.
Bluntly, we should only be required to provide
monies to those states and congressional
districts which vote in favor of the expenditure
and withhold those monies from the states and
districts which vote against the aid. As a matter
of fact, that principle should also apply to any
and all other budget lacerations. Them there rich
people have no need to waste money when it
competes with a balanced budget.
In our budget, we have something calling for
discretionary international financial assistance
or foreign aid which we give to the so-called
Third World Nations who are at poverty levels
and have need for nation building money under
our direction and with our favored contractors.
When the time comes that we determine that
third worlders need more money; and we further
decide that we can’t give them more foreign
aid money on top of what they already owe
us. That’s when it becomes obvious that it is a
humanitarian process to forgive and delete the
money they owe us, so we can give them more
money. It allows us to call it financing instead of
recognizing is as being a charity.
An examination of the breakdown of the $14
trillion shows that the United States of America
owes the United States of America $5.7 trillion
which we stole or transferred from other government
trust funds, allocations and the like to
pay for current expenses, earmarks and other socalled
necessary expenditures like war or military
peace missions.
Since we give out money all over the place,
it shouldn’t be at all difficult to state with assurance
that we will be and are unable to pay back
the money we owe ourselves or to pay back the
funds or departments we owe it to. If we can’t
pay for benefits to keep our citizens healthy and
alive, we sure as hell can’t pay ourselves interest
and principal which we misapplied in fictitious
internal transactions or in the application of creative
accounting.
So face it, without our printing presses, we
have all the qualifications for a Third World
Nation Status. We then can immediately forgive
the 5.7 Trillion debt opening that amount eliminated
from the debt authorizations and available
for irrational spending assuring that there will always
be money available for bonuses and spend
money for our banks and gas and oil companies.
Probably by error, we might even create venture
capital monies available to small and research
businesses rebuilding our own nation with its
infrastructure returning it to a fertile way of life.
We will thus easily end the idiocy of that
phony special Congressional committee unswerving
in its destructive path of assuring the
draining of Medicare, veteran benefits and social
security. With half of the committee committed
to not raise taxes, we can forget about revenue
and just castrate the working class assuming that
there still is a sufficient number left in the working
class. We were told everything is all on the
table except for the
fact that the table
is not there - it had
been sold down the
river.
With this elimination of the $5.7 trillion, the
Cut-Throat Budget Slashers would not have to
be embarrassed by their cut, slash, eliminate and
run strategy – “NO” would just end up another
word in the dictionary. Just think of how many
more years we would have protected ourselves
before we are subjected to the irrationality of
the bipartisan psychodrama we just played out
in the Congress. Sometimes I wonder whether
the proper word is bipartisan or in actual fact
– bi-polar.
Imagine what we could do with an additional
credit close to $6 trillion of spendable monies
– we could have steak sandwiches with our
tea. We would, of course, have to avoid allowing
ourselves being brought into wars such as Libya
by way of the back doors of a NATO or United
Nations. We could even give proper sized bribes
to Iraq and Afghanistan and come back home –
it’s cheaper than blood and then we can regularly
blow the hell out of them with our drones
and missiles and our in-and-out swat teams.
This would also avoid the uncomfortable necessity
of the Cut-Throat Budget Slashers having
to honestly answer the question of “Am I my
Brother’s Keeper” There was a question asked
about a dying man coming to a hospital without
insurance and as to whether you should provide
service. The answer seemed to be; well he had
the choice of dying at home or at the hospital;
that it was his problem that he didn’t have the
money to buy insurance. My brother had insurance
– does yours
In the meantime, if he needs it, Obama can
use the constitutional by-pass which they [don’t
ask me who “they” are] said was available, but
not used by him in his illusionary charge at bipartisanship.
I’ve always been told that you can’t
play ball games without balls.
If those approaches take too long, just immediately
submit a prepackaged GM bankruptcy
petition in advance on the defaulting money we
owe ourselves just wiping out the debts.
For those of you who don’t find solace in my
approach, let me suggest an approach with which
you are familiar. The one approach I find satisfying
is to have the government together with
the hedge funds, banks and the other greedy bastards
bundle the outstanding $5.7 trillion debt
into securities. The government and the banks,
etc. can sell the unsecured debt at a profit to unknowing
pension funds, foreign investors and
other suckers as was done with the subprime
mortgage debt which put us into the recession
[whatever]. Since we all know that the securities
are without real value, we together with our
financial allies could make money coming and
going and eliminate the debt from our balance
sheets and debt limit. If worse comes to worse,
it would be obvious to all that the United States
is “too big to fail” in the global marketplace and
then China and the oil barons together with us
can put together a stimulus package to bail us
out.
In most budget discussions, tax reform always
comes into play. Why don’t those who
claim that millionaires are job creators put it to
a real test of reducing the tax rates to the millionaires
[earned and passive income] based on the
The Military Coalition (TMC), an influential
Washington, DC-based consortium of 34 military
and veterans groups, presented its highest
leadership awards on October 5, 2011 to
Representative Tim Walz (D-MN) and Brian
Kessler, Walz’s legislative assistant, for their
leadership in seeking quality-of-life improvements
for servicemembers, veterans, their
families and survivors. The awards ceremony
was held at the Reserve Officers Association
Building on Capitol Hill.
Walz, himself a retired Army National
Guard Sergeant Major, was recognized for his
leadership in pursuing legislation to authorize
veteran status for Reserve component retirees,
improve veterans’ transition services, improve
disability and traumatic brain injury rehabilitation
programs, and protect servicemembers
from mortgage abuses.
Colonel Steve Strobridge (USAF-Ret),
TMC Co-Chair and Government Relations
Director of the Military Officers Association of
America (MOAA), said, “Congressman Walz
knows first-hand the sacrifices involved in a military
career and has taken an active leadership
role in ensuring America does the right thing by
those who serve and have served. While he’s
been particularly active on initiatives affecting
the National Guard and Reserve, his determined
and persistent leadership support has extended
to every segment of the military population –
currently serving, Guard/Reserve, retired, survivors
and family members.”
MCPO Joseph Barnes (USN-Ret), TMC
Co-chair and National Executive Director of the
Fleet Reserve Association (FRA), said, “We’re
extremely gratified and proud to honor Rep. Tim
Walz, who is the most senior enlisted person
ever to serve in the House of Representatives.
From left: Lt. General Stephen Olmstead, of the
Marine Corp League, Ed Dockery, of the Fleet
Reserve Association, and National Commander
Allen Falk enjoyed reminiscing about their days
in the Marine Corps.
On the Veterans’ Affairs Committee and working
closely with all of the military and veterans
organizations, he has epitomized the true leader
Herb Rosenbleeth, at the microphone, conducting
the program with Co-Chair Colonel Steve
Strobridge of the Military Officers Association.
who makes sure his troops and their families are
taken care of.”
“The legislators are the champions,” said
Colonel Herb Rosenbleeth (USA-Ret), TMC
President and National Executive Director of
the Jewish War Veterans of the United States,
“and their staffs expend huge amounts of effort
in crafting legislation, working with military associations
to fill in the details, and coordinating
our mutual efforts to get other legislators and the
public on board. Brian Kessler has been a great
supporter on a wide variety of key issues affecting
the military and veterans’ community. His
work on the veteran status and transition legislation
has been especially noteworthy.”
TMC represents the interests of more than
six million members around the world, including
active duty, National Guard, Reserve, and retired
members and veterans of the seven uniformed
services, plus their families and survivors.
number of jobs they created by decreasing their
rate by the jobs created and increasing the rate to
those who do not create jobs or minimal number
of jobs. This may lead to bringing jobs back to
the U.S. from overseas or in foreign tax havens –
a new sort of performance tax.
You know something else Why don’t we
use another approach by figuring out what we
spent this year and what we are going to have to
spend for the next couple of years I know that
there are unanticipated things such as new wars,
nature’s gross games, unexpected 9/11 type and
other proper expenditures to grow America.
Use the new cash flow approach to operations
replacing the studied travesty we keep on going
through figuring how much we have to cover political
earmark bribery and replace budget type
committee chairman every couple of years and
include newly elected representatives and senators
on those committees so that they can understand
the stupidity of their reason for running for
office and having to mandate money to run the
government and, more importantly, how much
they have to raise to stay in office.
By the way, my final convoluted approach at
this time, how about eliminating congressional
staff and expenses forcing the Congressmen to
read and prepare the bills and reports by themselves
and without lobbyists to help them. It
can’t hurt!
As Billy Shakespeare wrote:
“Out, out brief candle. Life’s but a walking
shadow, a poor player that struts and frets
his hour upon the stage, and then is heard no
more; it is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound
and fury, signifying nothing.”
Adjutant General of Florida, Maj. Gen. Emmett R. Titshaw Jr.
Major General Emmett R.Titshaw Jr. addressing
convention delegates at the 116th Annual
National Convention.
On behalf of the 12,000 Guardsmen of Florida,
I thank you – the Jewish War Veterans of the
USA – for your unprecedented support in helping
to ensure our ability to answer our nation’s
call. It is through the support of our nation’s
citizens and organizations such as yours, that
our National Guard remains a formidable, accessible
and ready force for our country.
I frequently look back upon our Florida
National Guard’s rich heritage – a history
that is nearly 446 years old – to when Pedro
Menendez, in September 1565, held what historians
recognize as the first known muster of
Citizen-Soldiers in North America. Our past
still resonates in much of what we do today
through contributions our Citizen-Soldiers and
Citizen-Airmen continue to make in our communities,
state and nation each and every day.
As I reflect upon the past 14 months that
marked my first year serving as the Adjutant
General of Florida, our Guardsmen have
made extraordinary contributions and sacrifices.
Today, we have more than 700 Soldiers
and Airmen currently mobilized for federal
active duty with more than 400 of them deployed
around the world in support of various
operations in locations such as Iraq and
Afghanistan. This past year, we saw the return
of the 53rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team
– our largest, single-unit deployment since
World War II. Other deployments also include
the 125th Fighter Wing; 690th Military Police
Company; 1-265th Air Defense Artillery; units
of the 164th Air Defense Artillery Brigade; 3rd
Battalion, 20th Special Forces Group; Special
Operations Detachment-CENTRAL; 1153rd
Financial Management Detachment; 290th
Joint Communications Support Squadron;
202nd Red Horse Squadron and more recently,
our Detachment 8 Operational Support Airlift
Agency. Our 1-111th Aviation Battalion,
1204th Aviation, 290th Joint Communications
Support Squadron and 125th Security Forces
Squadron will also soon deploy to meet our nation’s
objectives.
The events of Sept. 11, 2001, sharply
changed the National Guard as an institution
– it brought a transformation of the National
Guard from what was traditionally a “strategic
reserve” to a combat proven operational force.
Of note, the Florida National Guard has now
mobilized for federal active duty its 15,000th
service member since 9/11. After a decade of
persistent conflict, we are at the highest level
ever of trained, equipped, and combat-experienced
forces available to our state and nation.
At the same time, we are organized in over 55
communities across Florida, responding to domestic
crises and emergencies.
Besides our recent deployments, our Guard
members have been busy on the homefront with
our state mission. In 2010, the Florida National
Guard activated more than 200 Soldiers and
Airmen to perform missions in support of the
Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of
Mexico. Just this summer, the Florida Army
National Guard joined the battle against wildfires
across the state by augmenting civilian firefighters
in three Florida counties. At the same
time the wildfires were occurring, we successfully
partnered with Florida’s State Emergency
Response Team to synchronize and test our capabilities
in preparation for the hurricane season.
That readiness was recently rehearsed as
Hurricane Irene threatened our coast. Although
Irene was a “near miss” for Florida, our forces
were ready. In fact, our air is currently operating
in Virginia and Pennsylvania in support of
our fellow Guardsmen in the Mid-Atlantic and
Northeast states.
The Florida National Guard also has one
of the most successful counterdrug programs
in the nation. We support law enforcement
agencies and community-based organizations
throughout the state through law enforcement
training; Drug Demand Reduction programs
that educate Florida’s youth on drug prevention;
and Drug Supply Reduction that assisted in the
seizure of more than $709 million in illegal narcotics.
Programs such as these add value to our
local communities and allow our Soldiers and
Airmen to give back to the communities they
live in and the citizens they serve.
As I look forward to what lies ahead, I see
evolutionary changes as we transition to meet
tomorrow’s challenges while preserving our
proud heritage. One thing remains true, however
– our enduring value to the Nation is undeniable,
and the support of organizations like
the Jewish War Veterans of the USA is critical
to our continued success. I thank you again
– Commander Steve Zeitz and all the distinguished
members – for all you have done and
continue to do as we perform our missions at
home and abroad.
Air Force Academy Cadets Discuss Religious Tolerance
Accompanied by two Air Force Chaplains, two Jewish Air Force cadets came to
the convention and spoke to delegates about their experiences at the Academy as
Jewish students under the Academy’s religious diversity program.
The first cadet to speak, Cadet 2nd Class Jolie Grossman, stated that throughout
her training, she has never been subjected to anti-Semitism and had even
been allowed to miss training events to attend services.
Cadet 3rd Class David Harris also confirmed that he had not experienced anti-Semitism
at the Academy. He stressed that the Academy has a zero-tolerance
policy towards religious discrimination.
Both Chaplains, Jewish Chaplain (Maj.) Joshua Narrowe and Protestant
Chaplain (Capt.) Shawn Menchion confirmed what the cadets reported and also
briefed the convention delegates about the Academy’s religious respect program,
which is designed to foster respect for other religions and beliefs.
Ritchie Boys Reunion
By Guy Stern, Director, International Institute of the Righteous
Some came in wheelchairs, others leaned on
canes and relatives, but all mustered, for brief
moments, the military strides of their years of
service during World War II. The Ritchie veterans
who attended the first-ever Ritchie reunion,
sponsored by the Holocaust Memorial Center,
sported the pride of a youthful common achievement:
they, a group of prevalently Jewish-
German or Jewish–Austrian refugees, helped
in bringing about the Allied victory in Europe.
Their unique linguistic and cultural insight
and their specialized training at Camp Ritchie,
which ranged from interrogation to psychological
warfare to intercepting enemy communications,
changed the scope of military intelligence
during World War II.
One of their first activities during that reunion,
shared by a large group of their relatives
and later by the general public, was the inspection
of an impressive exhibit on intelligence
work during World War II. There were exclamations
of recognition as the veterans examined
weapons and equipment not looked upon in
seventy years and viewed photographs of interrogations
of prisoners-of-war and influential civilians
and of frontline propaganda broadcasts.
The veterans also recaptured the days on
a military base on the first evening, when they
traveled to Selfridge Air National Guard Base
and enjoyed a dinner there. They were greeted by
one of the line officers, Colonel Mac Crawford.
These first moments of a long-overdue reunion
were covered by a crew from NBC’s Today
Show, as was the official opening of the exhibit
on Sunday, July 24th. The coverage and the attendant
interviews were conducted by NBC’s
Bob Dotson, with Stephanie Becker serving
as producer. The 4-minute segment will air on
August 10th.
The military note was reinforced on the following
day when the official opening of the exhibit
was preceded by an honor guard comprised
of Jewish War Veterans from Michigan and an
honor guard from Selfridge. Stephen Goldman,
Executive Director of the Holocaust Memorial
Center, spoke movingly about the significance of
this reunion; Ritchie Boy Paul Fairbrook shared
some of his poetry about Camp Ritchie; Ritchie
Boy Gunter Kosse read a letter from former
Camp Ritchie instructor Henry Goldsmith, who
unfortunately could not attend the event; Ritchie
Boy Guy Stern, Director of the International
Institute of the Righteous at the Holocaust
Memorial Center elaborated for the audience the
work that he and his collaborator Steve Goodell
carried out in order to make this exhibit and reunion
a reality; and Ritchie Boy fan Dan Gross
was applauded for his role in tracking down the
900 surviving Ritchie Boys (there were initially
11,300). After that, the general public was invited
to view the exhibit, which featured a wealth
of new information on the Ritchie Boys:
• Only a few military historians knew that
the site and concept of Camp Ritchie
were conceived personally by General
George C. Marshall, the wartime United
States Chief-of-Staff.
• A significant number of Ritchie Boys
were subsequently sent to Fort Hunt,
Maryland, to participate in a clandestine
operation known as assignment “Paper
Clips.” Some of Germany’s top experts,
especially scientists, were assembled at
Fort Hunt after the war to receive military
clearance to take part in the development
of United States military science
and weaponry.
• It was anecdotally known that some of
the Ritchie Boys were selected for active
roles in military government and at
the Nuremberg War Crimes Trials. Quite
a significant number also served as investigators
of suspected residents of the
United States Zone of Occupation in
Germany and as interpreters and sometimes
as preliminary interrogators of the
accused Nazi officials.
Perhaps the most wonderful surprise, however,
was the ambiance of the reunion, its stage
set by honor guards of Jewish veterans from
Michigan, from Selfridge Air National Guard
Base and by a delegation from Fort Bragg, North
Carolina. Across seven decades, we became on
that magical weekend — much to the enchantment
of our families — a reincarnation of those
“Secret Heroes,” the brotherhood of the Ritchie
Boys.
Post and Department Commanders - We Need Your Help!
This year L’ Shanha Tova greeting cards were
sent to troops based on the names we have
on our list. Unfortunately, the mailing list is
not up to date due to increased s troop rotation.
We urgently ask Post and Department
Commanders to contact their local rabbis and
Directors of JCC’s to publish in their respective
newsletters, a request for the names and
APO #s of active duty Jewish military servicemembers.
Please send these names to me
via e-mail, at B.Epworth@gmail.com, and I
will establish and maintain contact with them
in the name of JWV.
We have set up gift baskets (with small
signs reading, “From the Jewish War Veterans
and Ladies Auxiliary) with candies, cookies
and toiletries in day rooms at the Joint Base
(McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst) and sent books for
their gift shelves.
We suggest JWV Posts adopt a military
base in their community. Introduce yourself
to the base commander and propose becoming
an active liaison as Friends of the
Base. Propose working with the Commander
on projects that he or she deems needed,
and which would provide enjoyment for the
troops. These projects can create and stimulate
interest and activity involvement for your
members, and quite conceivably, it might attract
new members.
Importantly too, you are spreading the
word that JWV is a working community partner
with the active military. This networking
can provide a source for recruitment of active
military into JWV. As active military, they can
join JWV without cost. As members, hopefully
we can stimulate their interest to continue
their membership when they become
Veterans. Post and/or Department involvement
with active military creates an identity
for JWV, and as I said before, a potential
source for recruitment.
Since the National Guard is also an active
component of the military it is also important
that Post Commanders contact local National
Guard units and establish a relationship between
JWV and the local armory.
Department Commanders, become an
attendee of general meetings of your State
“Military and Veterans Affairs Committee and
make them aware of JWV and your desire
to partner with them on related Military and
Veteran legislation. DC’s get involved with
your State Adjutant General supporting his
efforts and JWV’s interest in partnering with
him and DMAVA (Department of Veterans
and Military Affairs).
JWV Honors Florida JROTC Member
By Michael Corbett,PDC, National JROTC Chairman
“Seminole Ridge,” sounds like the scene of a
Civil War battlefield, but it’s not. A place where
a bunch of youngsters hangout is not where most
law-abiding citizens want to visit, especially
after dark. And, traveling 35 miles to a place
you’ve never been just to make a presentation
wouldn’t appeal to many. But, all three of these
conditions existed on a beautifully breezy sundrenched
Wednesday evening in South Florida .
I arrived at Seminole Ridge Community
High School about 20 minutes before the scheduled
start. A small sign pointed the way to the
entrance for the awards ceremony, and I parked
nearby, straightened my tie, assured my name
tag was on my jacket, applied my JWV service
cap, and walked up to the double doors. Within
two steps of that doorway, it was opened by a
young, uniformed lady snapping to attention,
“Welcome sir. The auditorium is this way,” as
she handed me a program.
At the door to the auditorium, a sharplooking
soldierly young man snapped to attention
with, “Sir, welcome to ‘Hawk’ Battalion,
if I may have your name, I shall escort you to
Colonel Hunt.” At this, the female cadet offered,
“Thank you for your service, sir,” as she
departed for the front door to greet the next unsuspecting
veterans’ representative.
Lieutenant Colonel Hans Frederick Hunt
seemed too young to have spent a career in
the US military. “Mr. Corbett, the Jewish War
Veterans. I’m so glad you could make it. Please
make yourself comfortable as I finish coordinating.
It’s so good to have you here.” The voice
emulated the age – he couldn’t have been more
than about 28-30, I thought; a strapping young
man with, as I had guessed, a chest full of medals.
The ribbons he wore, as near as I could
make them out with my 65-year-old eyesight,
were crowned with the Army Commendation
Medal. His rank as a retired US Army officer
would easily mislead anyone just hearing his
calm, mild-mannered voice with a jocular lilt.
He checked-off the incoming visitors and counseled
his charges in more of a brotherly manner
than as a seasoned career Army Commanding
Officer.
The Cadets, and there must have been
close to a hundred of them, ran errands, carried
props, coordinated activities, and moved
about with military precision. Until, that is,
1900 hours. LTC Hunt called his Battalion to
order; parents and friends shuffled for their
seats, and the awards ceremony was underway.
Of course, the American Legion was there, as
were the AMVETS, the VFW, the 81st Airborne
Certificate of Appreciation presented to Michael Corbett, at
the JROTC ceremony.
Association, the Daughters of the American
Revolution, the Military Order of the World
Wars (MOWW), AUSA, the Navy and Marine
Corps Recruiters and numerous other local, regional,
and national organizations. As LTC Hunt
called out the organizations, the representative
climbed the five stairs to the center of the stage
to greet Dr. Lynn McGee, SRCHS Principal,
who made it clear she was so glad we could attend
and was gratified that her “children” would
be recognized by such professional organizations
as the JWV.
“Now, representing the Jewish War Veterans
of the United States of America, Mr. Michael
Corbett, Department of Florida Commander,”
announced LTC Hunt. A young Cadet marched
toward me, handed me the certificate and the
medal and said, “Thank you for your service,
sir.” Before I could respond, he made a crisp
‘about-face,’ and marched in the opposite direction.
The announcement was then made that
Cadet Captain Savannah Perryman is the recipient
of the “Jewish War Veterans Americanism
Medal.” The Corps of Cadets, all seated together
in the center of the room, broke-out in
cheers and applause as she approached my position
from the side of the stairway in front of
the stage. I handed her the certificate, and she
too, thanked me for my service. I then placed
the medal in her left palm as we shook hands,
and I congratulated her and wished her the best
in her future. As the photographer took our picture,
she must have noticed my lapel pin as she
said, “Sir, were you a Marine” “Yes, I am,”
I quickly responded. She said, “Thank you for
your service, sir,” and just as quickly marched
off the stage.
Next, LTC Hunt approached my position
on stage, handed me a framed “Certificate of
Appreciation,” and remarked, “We’re so glad
you could be here, we hope you’ll come back
next year.” I was amazed. Here
was a 3-year old JROTC program
operating at full speed in a
mere 6-year old school building
out there, far from the mainstream
of Interstate 95, the county seat,
and all the money for which Palm
Beach County is so well known.
All the young Cadets were brighteyed
and connected – these are the
people with cell-phones, computers,
Internet--all manner of gadgets,
wired and wireless.
They will take us successfully
to the future, I have no doubt. If I
ever worried that the media stories
of America’s youngsters would
send our country to hell in a handbasket,
this event convinced me
that I will only die worrying as our country will
continue to be graced with the right-thinking and
determined leadership of these people whose
moral compass is certainly pointing them in the
right direction. I would advise all my contemporaries
to keep a positive attitude that, while a
generation is fighting our battles in the ‘Global
War on Terrorism,’ another generation is right
behind them anxiously ready, perfectly willing,
and both physically and intellectually able to fill
their shoes.
What an amazing opportunity we had to
expose our organization not only to the next
generation of potential military members, but to
connect with veterans of other organizations. I
was even invited to an open house by the local
American Legion of Wellington – a bedroom
community providing a great opportunity to
stand-up a new Post in an area that is growing
quickly and already has several synagogues and
a Jewish Community Center.
I’m glad I made the commitment to attend
this event. I can’t wait for the next opportunity.
Our organization can ill afford to miss a chance
to be front and center to the greater population.
It is a display of honor and commitment to our
collective, honorable military service as much
as it is a bold statement that we are connected
in our communities. JROTC programs abound
in schools throughout our country. This is one
opportunity of which all Posts should take advantage.
Be seen. Be known. Be active.
with their Senators and Representatives. As a
result, many cosponsers were obtained in support
of the necessary legislation and eventually
the bill was passed. National Commander Steve
PDC Bernie Epworth were among many JWV
leaders who helped us realize this important
legislative goal.
Great credit for this Jewish Chaplains
Memorial also goes to three outstanding
members of JWV, Admiral (Chaplain) Harold
Robinson of the Jewish Welfare Board, to Sol
Moglen, a JWV member of Post 695, and to our
recent National Chaplain, Simeon Kobrinetz,
who was working diligently on this project
when he passed away on September 7th.
On October 10, exactly two weeks before
the dedication of the memorial at Arlington,
the chaplain’s memorial was on display at the
National Museum of American Jewish Military
Rosenshein, arranged for this display and was
present to greet visitors on that day.
Challenges to Veterans Community
Continued from page 1
This will provide veterans who are not interested
in attending college access to programs that
better fit their career goals.
In 2009, everything had to be done
by hand at that time, yet the VA managed
to put 173,000 vets in school that
year. Also 518,000 Vets and dependants
were admitted to college the same year.
The people in the VBA education section
worked weekends, no vacations, no
time off. They worked 24/7, to get these
vets and youngsters into school, and at
the same time they initiated new IT tools
to streamline the process. It took a year
to develop the tools but by 2010 they
were in place and operating. When you
add those in Vocational rehabilitation
programs and Vets on the G.I. Bill the
number of Vets and dependants currently
in school, exceeds 840,000.
The Secretary said that implementing
the post-9/11 GI Bill showed him that the
VA was “tough and agile enough to implement
a new program on the fly,” and that it is “innovative
enough to simultaneously develop new
tools to better administer that new program for
the long haul.” This, he says, is evidence that
the VA has “good, dedicated, and creative people
who come to work at VA every day.”
While Secretary Shinseki was optimistic
about the future for veterans programs, he did
not hold back on pointing out the problems we
are confronting.
Secretary Shinseki acknowledged that the
current economic climate has been particularly
difficult for veterans, with over one million unemployed,
including a 13.3 percent unemployment
rate for post-9/11 veterans. To combat this
problem, he pointed to new initiatives proposed
by the Obama administration to offer tax credits
to businesses hiring veterans, design a “reverse
boot camp” to help servicemembers transition
to civilian life, and improved career development
and job search programs for veterans.
Veterans have also been particularly affected
by homelessness. The VA is in the process
of creating a registry of the estimated 80,000
homeless veterans. Secretary Shinseki believes
that this registry will help them fully understand
the problem and develop programs to prevent
veterans from becoming homeless in the first
place.
The VA is maintaining a registry of
Homeless vets, and is working with HUD, The
Department of Labor, and Education along with
numerous Non Government Organizations to
offset the problem. Since 2008, 29,000 homeless
vets have been housed, and an additional
30,000 have been assisted through the “Help
line”.
He set goals to reduce the number of homeless
veterans to below 60,000 by the end of next
Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs, General Eric
Shinseki, PNC Robert M. Zweiman, and PDC Michael Winnick,
NSO Director, discussed veterans affairs after General
Shinseki’s presention.
year, and to eliminate the problem entirely by
2015. The Secretary hopes to reach these goals,
not only by street rescues, but with preventative
programs that address the causes of homelessness.
“The VA,” he said, “is leading the fight
against homelessness with all of our substantial
capabilities: primary medical and dental care;
mental health; substance abuse treatment; education;
case management; housing; and jobs
counseling.” The Secretary also endorsed a
“Veterans Court” to deal with petty crimes, with
a referral to the VA for PTSD treatment or other
care as needed.
Another major challenge facing the veterans
community, and a top legislative priority for
the JWV, is the VA disability claims backlog.
Currently there is a backlog of 810,000 ratable
cases to review, meaning that many veterans
are not getting the benefits they have earned
when they need it. “Of the things you asked
me to take on,” said Shinseki, “this one’s taking
longer to achieve momentum. But we have a
host of promising options being piloted today
and expect them to begin paying off in 2012, as
we begin fully automating the disability claims
process.” The Secretary went on to say that he
was committed to ending the backlog by 2015,
by processing claims in no more than 125 days.
Following his remarks to convention delegates,
Secretary Shinseki sat down for a private
interview with PNC Robert M. Zweiman and
Michael Winnick, PDC, NSO Director. On the
subject of PTSD (Post Trauma Stress Disorder),
I spoke about the cost savings methods being
used by the VA in some regions. Where in the
past they had been using private contractors
to administer care, they have now eliminated
many of the contractors and increased the size
of treatment groups to up to 25 people meeting
twice a month for one hour. This method is
ineffective.
The Secretary committed to examining
the situation and acknowledged the
need for effective care to assist servicemen
and women affected by PTSD.
We expressed our concerns with
the uncertain future of the Department
of Defense and VA budgets, and what
effect this could have on funding for
the programs that he had just outlined.
Secretary Shinseki shared our concerns
about what recommendations might be
made by the special Budget “Committee
of 12,” but assured us that the President
would be closely involved with any prioritization
process affecting military and
veteran programs.
Secretary Shinseki thanked the members
of the Jewish War Veterans for our
leadership on these important issues, and our
dedicated work in caring for America’s veterans.
He noted that, as the oldest veteran service
organization, we have, “for over one hundred
years, promoted the principles on which our
great Nation was founded.”
In closing, Secretary Shinseki, recalled
the heroic actions of Jewish Medal of Honor
Recipient Captain Ben Salomon on Saipan in
1944. Captain Salomon, a dentist, was tending
to wounded soldiers when his position came
under Japanese attack. He took control of a
machine gun when its crew had been killed and
was able to hold off the enemy long enough to
allow the wounded to evacuate.
The men and women at the VA, he said,
“stand in awe of such courage, determination,
and selflessness. Remembering Ben Salomon
and the service of all Jewish Veterans is a privilege
and an honor.”
The Veterans Administration has taken a
new motto, Integrity, Commitment, Advocacy,
Respect, Excellence
Taking the first letter of each word and you
have “I CARE”
He went on to say, “We will not fail the men
and women who defended our country”
“Serve Veterans, Do it better for now and
the future”.
NOTES from the committees
Development Committee
By Chairman PNC Monte Mayer
Certainly seems that the premiums
selected over the past years,
are really welcomed by you, our
readers. The Calendar which is
being prepared for 2012, actually
tells the story of Jewish war veterans…We
don’t include pictures
of scenery or flowers, but pictures
that tell a story of our contribution
to this country’s military history. .
Our High Holiday cards are really
works of art by a contemporary
Israeli artist…We all complain
about mailing labels, but we sure
use them when they arrive…
Your support has been sincerely
appreciated, and continues
to support the JWV mission. In
addition to your financial support,
we still want from you the stories
of your family, or friends whose
heroics need to be told and retold.
If you and other members of your
family have served over the years,
that’s what we want to know. Good
photos than can be reproduced, are
a must, but please go through those
old pictures, and go back through
time, and let us tell a story. Please
remember, the stories we want
to tell, can only come from you,
There is nowhere else we can go
to get these events and record them
for posterity.
when they have their annual
awards ceremony. After that
the JROTC Committee Chair and/
or the Post Commander will visit
the school on the awards ceremony
day and make the presentation.
The Medal of Merit is clearly
described in the JWV Program
Guide (along with the Boy Scout
Program). Order the award from
National HQ with the full name
of the cadet selected to receive the
award; with sufficient notice, the
Medal will be delivered in time for
the ceremony.
Membership Committee
By Chairman Robert Richter
Unfortunately all Veteran
Organizations, including JWV, are
experiencing membership losses
as a result of WWII Veterans passing
away. . VA data shows that this
trend should end in about four (4)
years.
VA Secretary General Eric
Shinseki, the keynote speaker at
our recent National Convention,
indicated that about 5,000,000 men
and women have served in the military
since 9/11. Guest speaker Air
Force Academy Chaplain Joshua
Narrow stated that about 1% of the
AF Cadets are Jewish. The writer
believes that about 1.25% of all
service personnel are Jewish. That
leaves around 61,500 Jewish veterans
or active duty Jewish personnel
that can be recruited. We
need to be collectively smarter to
learn how to recruit these potential
members so that we can counteract
the loss of WWII members.
We know that they are recruitable
because a small number of
members in Michigan, California,
Florida, Pennsylvania, New
Orleans, Ohio, and New Jersey
are signing them up. The only difference
in this small group is they
WORK AT IT!! We must all be recruiters
with a positive attitude to
succeed at it. Remember it is your
organization.
Some of you have asked how
the multiyear dues payments are
working out. A summary of the results
for last year follows:
About 10% of all members on
the average have signed up for two
or three year memberships.
One group in particular, “the
Members at Large” had almost
40% sign up for three years.
WOW!! If you have not as yet
paid your dues, please do so and
save a few dollars by signing up
for two or three years
Homeless Committee
By Chairman PDC Maxwell S. Colon
Veteran homelessness can start
with a lack of preparation for civilian
life prior to leaving the service.
The military must transition
legions of men and women who
have been at war for years into
citizens ready to go to work in the
civilian world. Many veterans
wind up with no transferable skills
when it comes time to leave the active
service, and many sustained
injuries and exhibit post-traumatic
stress behaviors.
Many veterans do not take
advantage of all the resources
provided to them, including educational
programs, and many
homeless veterans are not aware of
the benefits they should be receiving.
Unemployment can trigger
a progressively worsening downward
spiral, potentially leading to
clinical stress and homelessness.
The military is the one agency
that can solve these problems and
has the most to lose by not addressing
them with more urgency
down the road. The Center for
American Progress estimates that
107,000 veterans are homeless and
that about 10 percent are women.
Research into preventing homelessness
among female veterans
and veterans with families is getting
more attention. We should
not only prevent and alleviate, but
attempt to ultimately end homelessness
in the U.S. Remember
that America’s homeless veterans
are individuals who have served
in World War II, the Korean War,
the Cold War, Vietnam, Grenada,
Panama, Lebanon, the Gulf War,
and during non-war times.
I hope that I have opened your
eyes to the vast and critical aspect
of the homeless veterans in our
country. Thank you for listening.
Members and friends of the JWV
Vietnam Veterans’ Committee
had many reasons for a great
Convention in Jacksonville. First
of all, one of our most loyal
National Commander. The
Committee presented Commander
Elect Falk with an award Vietnam
Veteran’s T-shirt. The presentation
was made by Chair Roger
Gove and Co-Chair Mike London.
A wonderful photo of Allen was
sent to the Veteran for publication.
Twenty six members attended the
Committee meeting on Thursday
and were given updates on the
committee traveling Museum exhibit,
a VA hospital visit at the
next Convention, and discussed
the influence committee members
have on JWV policy. Members
were given an update on changes
in Chinese military policy. We
also received a refrigerator magnet
which had been offered for distribution
in the Convention bags. As
in past years, Committee information
was on the back inside page
in the Convention journal. The
Annual Vietnam Veternans’ night
out, hosted by Co-Chair Mike
London at the Mayport Naval
Station Chief’s Club, was well attended.
In addition to a great kosher
meal, members were given an
informative tour of the many memorial
items at the club.
The committtee members
raised an additional $2,000 for the
new permanent exhibit, bringing
the total to over $27,000 raised by
MUSEUM NEWS
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
It is my honor to be elected to
the high office of President of the
National Museum of American
Military Jewish History. Following
in the footsteps of all of our great
past presidents will be a difficult
task. I am taking over this task from
Past President David Magidson.
He and Exhibits Chairman PNC
Robert M. Zweiman have done a
fantastic job in preparing the museum
for our Past Present Future
exhibit. The work has already
started. The first floor has been
opened up and we are ready to start
building the exhibit. It will be my
responsibility to follow through
with both the construction of the
exhibit and of raising the addition
funds necessary to complete
the project. Thanks to President
Magidson we have a great start,
but we are only one third of the
way there. I know that with everyone’s
help we will make this major
exhibit a huge success. Our new
exhibit will cover the military history
of the Jews in Service to our
country. At present there are sections
for all of the wars we have
engaged in from the Revolutionary
War through the Civil War, WWI,
WWII, Korea, Vietnam, and
Persian Gulf to the present day in
Afghanistan and Iraq and a number
of smaller conflicts.
From its inception our museum
has represented all Jews who
served - L’Dor v’Dor. From one
generation to the next forever -
from Asher Levy and Uriah P.
Levy, to Tibor Rubin and Jack
Jacobs, to Roslyn Schulte and
Nathan B. Bruckenthal. We
are here to provide research to
help others find out about our
past and their past. Recently
the museum received a letter
from Jason Abady thanking
members of our staff for their
efforts in arranging a viewing
of a DVD, Battle at the
Overland Trail – One Night
of Combat on Guadalcanal,
which highlights the actions of
USMC K Company and the Kuma
Battalion of the Japanese army.
Progress Report on the New Permanent Exhibition
It has been a busy spring for the NMAJMH,
as we have been working with Quatrefoil
Associates on the Conceptual Design Phase for
the museum’s new permanent exhibition. The
Conceptual Design builds upon the Master Plan
(formulated in 2008) by providing more detail
about how the exhibition will look and feel and
by describing the exhibit goals and content in
more depth. The museum has many wonderful
artifacts and photographs, and the new exhibition
will bring our collection to life.
The design was built around the concept of
Americanism, with each section of the exhibit
relating to Americanism. The exhibition will
address broad topics, such as what it means to
serve in the military and America’s role in the
world, along with uniquely Jewish issues, including
anti-Semitism and facing the Holocaust.
The Jewish War Veterans of the U.S.A. and its
members will also play an important part of the
exhibition.
The exhibition will feature state-of-the-art
audio-visuals and interactivities, and each area
of the exhibit will employ its own unique technology.
The beginning of the exhibit will greet
visitors with the sound of marching and a video
kiosk showing clips of media related to World
War I. The next section will feature a large
projection of constantly
changing
images of Civil
War-era Jewish
heroes. From this
area, visitors will
move to the section
of the exhibit
dealing with World
War II, where they
will view newsreel
footage of the
1933 JWV Protest
March and listen
to oral histories of
WWII veterans recounting
their experiences. The next section of
the exhibition will feature a Microsoft Surface
table, which will have an interactive world map
and historical timeline with information, images,
and stories from the Cold War to present
day conflicts. This area will also include a video
kiosk featuring the Fallen Heroes. Visitors will
conclude their experience with oral histories by
JWV members discussing their service and what
the JWV means to them. The exhibition will be
flexible; the technologies used will make it easy
to change content within the exhibit as new information
and materials become available.
As the content and design move into the next
phase, Design Development, a curator or historian
will work with the team to define the content
details and to begin writing the exhibition script.
The Conceptual Design is an important step towards
bringing this exhibition to reality. You can
learn more about the exhibit and lend your support
by visiting the NMAJMH’s website: http://
Administratively Speaking By Mary Westley, Asst. Administrator
A FEW HIGHLIGHTS
E-mails
We had a successful First annual Family
Stories: Daughters, Mothers, and Bubbes storytelling
event in May. Families visited the museum
and told stories about the favorite women
in their lives. In June, at our Fifth annual Family
Stories: Sons, Fathers and Zadies storytelling
event, people spoke about their favorite male
family members.
Members have contacted me to ask “Well, I
don’t live near Washington, DC, so what good
is it to send me an e-mail about the event if I
can’t come” I have two responses to that question.
One, it’s good to keep informed about the
kind of events your museum is having; what
we are up to, and what directions we are taking.
And two, just because you live elsewhere
might not stop you from thinking “Wow, that is
a good idea, maybe we can do something like
that here where I live!” Or even, “I bet Uncle
James might like to participate in that event, He
lives in Maryland, just outside of DC!”
We will be opening Family Stories up a bit
further. Starting next year, those of you who do
not live in the vicinity of the museum can e-mail
us your story, or you can send us your DVD,
video, and photographs! We will review them
along with the local submissions. Stay tuned for
an announcement with more information about
next year’s Family Stories; upcoming in May
for the ladies and June for the men. We look
forward to hearing your stories!
“A very moving collection. My dad was
meaningful for me. Thank you.”
From Our Archives By Mike Rugel
Assistant Collections Manager/NMAJMH
Meyer Gilden’s artwork expresses what he saw
during World War II. This painting shows dead
and wounded amidst wreckage caused by the
Battle of the Bulge. The hills of the Ardennes
rise in the background. Medics are preparing to
take a body on a stretcher to the ambulance. A
dead body is in the foreground. There is some
destruction, but the buildings are still standing
(unlike much of the
Ardennes which was
destroyed). Your eyes
are drawn to the facedown
soldier who has
given his life.
Gilden’s diary from
his weeks in the
Ardennes describes
the beauty of some of
the European scenery.
He also describes
the near constant
sound of German
buzz bombs, his own
fear of death and his
reaction at seeing the
dead bodies of American comrades. These contrasting
impressions come together in the painting.
An otherwise idyllic landscape is ruined by
war.
Gilden was with the headquarters staff of the
XVIII Airborne Corps, in addition to the Bulge,
he was there for the Rhineland Campaign and
the Battle of the Ruhr Pocket. He was with the
XVIII Corps when they encountered Wöbbelin
Concentration Camp where about 1000 bodies
lay, dead from starvation.
Gilden’s artwork allowed him to establish a
relationship with General Matthew B. Ridgway.
Ridgway repeatedly commissioned pieces from
Gilden including battle scenes like the one
above, portraits of other generals and an official
XVIII Corps Guest Book. Like his art, Gilden’s
Judaism played a central role in his military service.
He frequently conducted services in the
absence of a Jewish chaplain. One personal art
project while in Europe was a beautiful script
of the Four Questions sent to his young son at
home for their Passover Seder. Near the war’s
end, Gilden was assigned to be a chaplain’s
assistant.
His military experience, particularly the
liberation of Wöbbelin Concentration Camp,
continued to inform Gilden’s art until he died
in 2003. His work was shown regularly at galleries
around his home in Washington, D.C. and
across the country. In addition to NMAJMH, his
paintings and drawings are in the collection of
