Anatomy of an Assembly<br />

At <strong>the</strong> f<strong>ib</strong>er’s core is pure silica; it’s <strong>the</strong> diameter of <strong>the</strong> core that you need<br />

to consider when purchasing an optical f<strong>ib</strong>er assembly. (The core<br />

diameter is often in <strong>the</strong> product’s item code. For example, <strong>the</strong><br />

P600-UV-VIS has a 600 µm diameter silica core.) Surrounding <strong>the</strong> core is a<br />

doped-fluorine silica cladding. A buffer material is <strong>the</strong>n applied. A buffer<br />

coats <strong>the</strong> core <strong>and</strong> cladding , streng<strong>the</strong>ns <strong>the</strong> f<strong>ib</strong>er <strong>and</strong> reduces stray light<br />

even fur<strong>the</strong>r. In <strong>most</strong> assemblies polyimide is used as <strong>the</strong> buffer; o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

assemblies use aluminum or acrylate. Then a jacketing is applied over <strong>the</strong><br />

core, cladding <strong>and</strong> buffer to protect <strong>the</strong> f<strong>ib</strong>er <strong>and</strong> provide strain relief.<br />

For off-<strong>the</strong>-shelf Premium-grade “Q” Optical F<strong>ib</strong>er Assemblies, <strong>the</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ard<br />

jacketing is stainless steel silicone monocoil. There are several o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

jacketing options when creating a custom assembly. Precision SMA 905<br />

Connecto<strong>rs</strong> terminate <strong>the</strong> assembly <strong>and</strong> are precisely aligned to <strong>the</strong> spectrometer’s<br />

slit to ensure concentricity of <strong>the</strong> f<strong>ib</strong>er. Finally, captive end caps<br />

protect <strong>the</strong> f<strong>ib</strong>er tips against scratches <strong>and</strong> contaminants.<br />

Assembly Identifie<strong>rs</strong><br />

Our optical f<strong>ib</strong>er <strong>and</strong> probe assemblies are clearly <strong>and</strong> cleanly<br />

labeled in three ways so that you always know <strong>the</strong> following<br />

about your assembly: its name, its core diameter, <strong>and</strong> its <strong>most</strong><br />

efficient wavelength region.<br />

The BOOT COLLAR color<br />

corresponds to <strong>the</strong> assembly’s<br />

f<strong>ib</strong>er type (<strong>and</strong> its <strong>most</strong><br />

efficient wavelength range).<br />

The BAND COLOR<br />

signals <strong>the</strong> diameter of<br />

<strong>the</strong> assembly’s core.<br />

A WHITE PRODUCT LABEL<br />

on an assembly includes <strong>the</strong><br />

product name <strong>and</strong> item code.<br />

B<strong>and</strong> Colo<strong>rs</strong><br />

The assembly’s b<strong>and</strong> color lets you know <strong>the</strong> f<strong>ib</strong>er type <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>most</strong><br />

efficient wavelength range in which your f<strong>ib</strong>er will work.<br />

A color b<strong>and</strong> tells you <strong>the</strong> diameter<br />

f<strong>ib</strong>er with which you are working.<br />
