have just returned from Cleveland
and the 12th annual Region 2
Symposium! What a great way to get a “daylily
fix” in the winter! Thanks to Curt
Hanson, who chaired the event again this
year, and his committee, all in attendance
heard great presentations, saw gorgeous new
introductions, and seedlings that are definitely
“beyond the edge.” The spirited auction
Saturday evening, coupled with a teaser
auction Friday evening, brought great prices
for some of the newest cultivars. Thank you
to all those hybridizers and growers who
donated and to all who purchased. And, if
From the Board
you didn’t attend this Symposium, put it on
your calendar for next year! You missed
another good one!
Our region, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana,
Michigan, and Ohio, proudly counts 65 AHS
display gardens, more than any other AHS
region. If you are considering display garden
status, a procedural change has been
made in the application process as of 1-1-
04. Display garden applications are to be
mailed to the AHS Display Garden Chairman
A major personnel change for 2004 for
AHS is the resignations of Jim Brennan and
Frances Gatlin as of July 1. Jim is Editor of
The Daylily Journal and Frances has served
in the capacity of Special Projects/Journal
Production. They have given us superior
publications and will be missed.
A search committee was formed, and it
chose Allen McLain from Region 14 as a
candidate for the editor’s position. The AHS
Board confirmed his appointment in October,
and I’m sure that he would appreciate
our support.
This is the season to concentrate on our
gardens, but also to take the time to visit
other gardens. What better way to do this
than to attend our National Convention in
St. Louis, July 1-3! The tour gardens will
be wonderful, but you’re in for a special treat
when we go to the St. Louis Botanical Gardens.
The daylily display beds there are not
to be missed!
If you want to travel a little farther north,
the Bay Area Daylily Buds are hosting the
Region 2 Summer Meeting in Green Bay,
WI, July 23-25. Again, there will be the opportunity
to tour beautiful gardens. Speakers
will be Leo Sharp and Dan Trimmer.
How about local gardens Many clubs arrange
bus tours to members’ gardens during
bloom time. The listing of AHS Display
Gardens, which will be published in
the summer issue of The Daylily Journal, is
another source for possible gardens to visit.
Put down your spade, find a friend to take
along, and go!
We need more Exhibition and Garden
Judges! If you are planning to attend the
national and/or regional meetings, why not
sign up for the beginning clinics and workshops.
If you have questions about what is
involved, contact me or our liaisons—Richard
