having a Region 2 meeting in Green Bay, Wisconsin, this summer
and that you are invited We are working on plans for a really great
time. Hey guys, this is not just a trip with your parents. We “Youth”
stick together! Think of all the new friends you will meet and the
fun you will have. I am excited! I am not going to tell you about all
the plans, but don’t miss out. There will be lots do.
I would love to hear from all of you.
Please e-mail me (wekyhe@msn.com)
about what you have been doing and any
special activities you would like to do at
the summer meeting. Hey, our Daylily
Enthusiasts of Southern Indiana (DESI)
club is hosting the Daylily Heaven in 2007
summer meeting. Mark it on your calendar.
We are already making plans for
YOU!
In this newsletter issue, we are introducing
some of the Youth members in the
Judy Heath (DESI) and the Metropolitan Columbus
DS (MCDS) clubs.
Kaylee Gray is the daughter of
Mike and Angie Gray. She lives
in Velpen, Indiana. Kaylee is six
years old and is in Kindergarten
at the Otwell Elementary School.
Her favorite part of Kindergarten
is reading and music. Kaylee is a
very busy young lady. She takes
dance lessons, plays tee-ball, enjoys
fishing, works on the computer.
Now, with all these activities,
she says her favorite hobby
is helping her Dad plant daylilies.
Her favorite daylily is LITTLE
GRAPETTE. Purple is Kaylee’s
and her mother’s favorite color. Kaylee Gray
She is a third-generation daylily
grower. Her favorite job is deadheading. I wonder who taught her
how to do that! We are looking forward to a very special purple
introduction from Kaylee in the near future.
Our next DESI Youth member is Tanner Gray. Tanner is nine
years old and is in the third grade at Otwell Elementary School.
This young man is destined to be a great hybridizer. He has very
definite traits in mind that he wants to see in a daylily. Number one
is a bubbly gold edge. His favorite daylily is ICING ON THE CAKE.
Tanner is in close competition with his grandfather to have the first
true blue daylily. Like his sister, Tanner also has a very busy schedule.
He plays basketball, soccer, video games, and he plants daylilies.
Tanner was also a very gracious host when we were treated to a
Bar-B-Q picnic at his home this past summer. Who knows, maybe
Tanner will have the very first blue daylily with a gold edge. We
have our fingers crossed.
Two good friends, often seen at the 2003 AHS National Convention,
are 14 year old McKenzie Williams and 18 year old Tiago
Bergemann. Tiago lives in Joinville, Santa Catarina, in Brazil. Tiago
developed a love of daylilies from his parents, Dario and Neussa.
His favorite hybridizers are Dan
Hansen and David Kirchhoff. Tiago
is majoring in International Business
at a college in his home town. He plays
tennis and soccer. We are looking forward
to meeting Tiago this summer in
St. Louis.
McKenzie is the other half of this
vivacious friendship. Not only does
McKenzie attend Memorial High
School, but she also works for her
Mom. They take pictures of newborn
babies at a large hospital in Evansville.
Leo Sharp is McKenzie’s favorite hybridizer,
and she has two daylilies
named after her. She plays basketball,
Tanner Gray
has a golden retriever named Pumpkin,
a cat named Daisy, and a hamster named Scratchy. McKenzie
has been attending regionals and nationals with her grandparents,
Don and Lea Ann Williams, for many years. We hope her brother,
Evan, will attend some of the meetings soon. Evan and McKenzie’s
parents are Judy and Eric Williams.
DESI is delighted to
introduce you to Shannon
Hayes their newest
Youth member. Shannon
is 13 years old and is in
the seventh grade at Pike
Central Middle School.
Shannon’s favorite daylilies
are ALIAS PETER
PARKER and READ
MY LIPS. She enjoys
working in the garden.
However, she spends
most of her time unloading
mulch. At school,
she plays volleyball and
throws shot put and discus
in track. Shannon McKenzie Williams (Evansville, IN).
Tiago Bergemann (Brazil) and
enjoys spending time
with her family. She and her brother,
Johnny, like drag racing and love
riding 4-wheelers. She also sings in the
choir and likes to listen to music with
her friends. Like a typical teen, Shannon
loves to talk with her friends on
the phone and the Internet. She is the
daughter of Mikki and David Asserud.
Shannon would love to meet other
Youth members at the Region 2 meeting
this summer.
Metropolitan Columbus DS Secretary
Virginia Myers forwarded information
about several AHS Youth
members who belong to MCDS, and
additional Region 2 Youth members
will be introduced in our next newsletter
issue.
