In November 2007,
Gail Johnstone
stepped down as
President / CEO.
Gail’s ten-year
presidency defined
a turning point for
this Foundation.
During her tenure, the Foundation
underwent a vast transformation and Gail
was key to each change.
Under her leadership, the Foundation
became a very disciplined and focused
organization. Guided by Gail, the Foundation
greatly expanded its products and services
to match the needs of donors; increased
and diversified its Board of Directors; and
put in place the order and systems required
of a top-flight stewardship organization.
The Board and staff of the Foundation
acknowledge Gail’s untiring efforts and
dedicate this report to her with sincere
gratitude for everything she has done to
make this Foundation what it is today.
2007 Year in Review
2007 was yet another groundbreaking year for your
Community Foundation.
Having completed a five-year strategic plan in 2006,
the Foundation moved into implementation mode in
2007.
The plan was introduced to the public with a
breakfast reception at the Buffalo Historical Society, a
place, like the Foundation, steeped in history.
Our competitive grant cycle and discretionary
funding became aligned with the following four focus
areas as identified in our plan.
• Increasing economic self-sufficiency for
low-income individuals and families
• Reducing racial and social disparities
• Enhancing and leveraging significant natural,
historic and architectural resources
• Strengthening the region as a center for arts
and culture
The result: we awarded over $866,000 of discretionary
grants, an all-time high in our history and a total of
$9,400,000 in charitable grants.
We substantially increased our outreach, convenings
and leadership initiatives. Our Green and Growing
Summit, Leaders Read and the Read to Succeed
Campaign were all successful early efforts.
We also expanded our internal capacity through
a staffing collaboration with The John R. Oishei
Foundation to add knowledge management expertise
and expand our communications and graphic design
capabilities.
In the financial area, we again scored high, with
another record number of new funds and growth in
assets. At the end of 2007, our funds grew to over 800,
with total assets of over $184 million.
In addition, we opened the largest new fund in
our history. The Career Aspiration Scholarship fund
was established with a stock transfer of $10,900,000.
This fund will help students with financial need attend
Bryant and Stratton College.
Our mission of connecting people, ideas and
resources to improve lives in Western New York is
brought to life by YOU – our donors, colleagues and
community partners. We extend our deepest gratitude
and humbly pledge to continue our service on behalf
of a vibrant and inclusive Greater Buffalo region with
opportunity for all.

A Decade of Transformation: 1997-2007
The results under Gail Johnstone’s ten years of Foundation leadership speak for themselves:
• More new funds were opened in the past 10 years than in the previous 78 years of our history
• The Foundation’s assets more than doubled, growing from $73 million in 1996 to over
$184 million at the end of 2007
• Foundation scholarship awards more than tripled, growing from $300,000 to over $1,000,000
annually
• Yearly grants to the community increased more than five fold, from $1,200,000 to $9,500,000.

Niagara Area Foundation
Moving forward, the NAF will take a leadership role
in improving early childhood development in Niagara
County to support a goal identified in our strategic plan
which directs us to “Promote positive change in Niagara
County through positive youth development.”
We believe that increasing the educational
attainment of our residents is vital to building a
thriving Niagara County. We thank our donors and

Letter from the Council Chair
In 1999, a small group of concerned citizens joined
together from across Niagara County to explore the
possibility of forming a charitable organization to
support philanthropy by individuals and businesses
throughout Niagara County. It was decided by the
founders that the best way to get started was to partner
with the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo.
In 2007, we began implementing our strategic plan.
Two of our main objectives are to attract, engage and
train community volunteers across Niagara County;
and to build our assets to $4 million by the year 2010.
We are off to a strong start. Our assets grew by
nearly a third last year, totaling over $3 million in 48
NAF funds.
Since the NAF was founded, grants made throughout
Niagara County by NAF and its donors total
$774,000…a record we are very proud of!

Increasing Self-sufficiency
READ TO SUCCEED

You’ve probably read the statistics. Thirty percent of
adults in the City of Buffalo are illiterate. That’s 65,000
people who will have a difficult time gaining or
maintaining meaningful, self-sustaining employment.
Read to Succeed, a program of the Community
Foundation, is combating illiteracy. The Community
Foundation’s two-year grant of $350,000 is supporting
the Read to Succeed Campaign, which helps prepare
pre-schoolers for kindergarten as part of its agenda.
Read to Succeed was awarded a $4.1 million threeyear
grant from the U.S. Department of Education to
implement the Early Reading First program.
Early Reading First employs literacy coaches to train
educators at day care centers to infuse literacy at every
opportunity. Three and four-year olds are being taught
how to recognize letters and understand directions
given orally. These children are getting ready to learn
before they hit the kindergarten doorway.
Early testing has already shown remarkable results.
Letter recognition for four-year olds increased by 42%
in just 5½ months. Their ability to understand spoken
language increased by nearly 20%. Read to Succeed
will continue to track the Early Reading First students
through the third grade with the help of the Buffalo
Public Schools.
Read to Succeed is increasing these pre-schoolers’
chances at educational success, leading to increased
high school graduation rates, higher college attainment
rates and subsequently higher incomes…incomes that
will allow them to be self-sufficient.

collaboration with the Margaret L. Wendt Foundation
and The John R. Oishei Foundation. For more

Letter from the Council Chair
Since 1977, the Wyoming Foundation has actively
supported a wide variety of cultural, educational and
human services organizations throughout Wyoming
County.
In 2007, we joined forces with the Community
Foundation for Greater Buffalo in order to expand our
capacity and philanthropic scope and better serve the
residents of our area.
As a result of this partnership, the dedicated
volunteer leaders of the Wyoming Foundation will be
able to concentrate on responding to the current and
emerging needs of Wyoming County. What’s more,
we will have the opportunity to tap the expertise and
significant resources of CFGB.
Originally an important source of funding for the
Wyoming County Hospital, the Wyoming Foundation
expanded its scope to provide support for the
community’s general needs in the late 1980s. Its $1.6
million endowment, built by gifts and bequests from
numerous individuals and groups, has most recently
provided grants to the Beaver Meadow Audubon
Center to support the Beaver Lodges Project, Habitat
for Humanity and the public libraries in Warsaw and
Perry. Its largest fund, the Mark E. Strome Scholarship
Fund, provides college support to students in the
Warsaw Central Schools.
The mission of the Wyoming Foundation is to
provide for the enrichment of the quality of life in the
Wyoming County region by:
• Developing a permanent endowment
• Assessing and responding to emerging and
changing community needs
• Providing a vehicle and services for donors with
varied interests at various levels of giving
• Serving as a resource catalyst to charitable
activities

Invested Funds for Perpetual Legacies

Community Action Funds (discretionary funds)
allow the Foundation’s Board to use its discretion in
supporting the most pressing community priorities,
often unforeseen when funds are established.
Field of Interest Funds target particular areas of
concern such as education, arts or a geographic area.
Donor Advised Funds allow donors to recommend
grants each year to the charities of their choice.
Scholarship Funds provide financial assistance for
students’ educational needs.
Designated Funds provide grants to organizations
pre-specified by the donor.
Agency Endowment Funds are established by nonprofit
organizations to provide a dedicated source of
ongoing revenue for current and future needs.

Provide for Shorter-term Charitable Giving
Flex Funds are invested funds that allow donors
the choice in investment approach and amount of
spending.
Philanthropic Funds provide convenience to donors
in annual giving.
Program Funds provide interim support for a project
or program that meets a specific community need as
the organization awaits its own 501(c)(3) designation.
It is easy to establish your own charitable fund and it
can be done in less than a day!
Call our development office, or talk to your
financial advisor. We’d be happy to walk you through
the following simple steps:
1. Determine your charitable purpose or intent.
Do you need to minimize current or future taxes
Is there someone you’d like to honor Is there a
general community cause you’d like to support
Or a specific charity you’d like to benefit
2. Select a name for your fund. You can use your
name, that of a family member, the name of a
favorite cause, or choose a name that allows you
to remain anonymous.
3. Select the type of charitable fund that best
supports your purpose. Our staff will outline your
options and discuss advantages of each.
4. Complete a simple governing document.
Our staff will help you complete a fund agreement
that makes your intentions clear.
5. Make an establishing gift. Choose the type
of assets you’d like to use to establish your fund.
Options include cash, check, stocks, bonds, real
estate or other assets.
6. Receive a tax deduction at the time the fund is
established and whenever additional contributions
are made to your fund.

Donor Profile
Buffalo Philharmonic and The Community Foundation
A Pa r t n e r s h i p I n P e r p e t u i t y.

Edward Kleinhans moved to the booming City of
Buffalo at the turn of the 20th century, founded
the clothing store that bore his name, and made his
fortune.
When Edward and his wife, Mary Seaton, both
lovers of music, died only three months apart in 1934,
they left in their will a bequest “to erect a suitable
music hall for the use, enjoyment and benefit of the
people of the City of Buffalo.” They chose to create
their legacy through the Community Foundation
(then called The Buffalo Foundation).
Today a close partnership still exists between the
Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, which finds its home
at Kleinhans, and the Community Foundation. The
Foundation holds over 10 designated endowment funds
that benefit the BPO, as well as numerous donor advised
and philanthropic funds which provide additional
support each year. In 2007, the BPO established a
permanent endowment fund at the Foundation.
This new fund was established to receive
contributions to the orchestra’s “Secure the Future”
Endowment Campaign. With an overall goal of
$30,000,000, orchestra leadership plans to provide
significant support for its ongoing operating needs in
the years ahead.
“This fund was thoughtfully set up to preserve and
grow the BPO’s resources. The earnings generated by
its principal will provide annual support for operating
and related needs and grow in size in the years ahead,”
said Angelo Fatta, BPO Board Chair.
The Community Foundation is proud to support
Kleinhans and the BPO in presenting music for the
people of Western New York, forever. Just as the
Kleinhans intended.

Legacy Society
A Planned Gift is a gift that will take place in the future. Planned Gifts can be
arranged through a variety of vehicles including a will, life insurance policy,
retirement account, annuity or a trust.
Legacy Society members have committed to supporting our community in the
future through a deferred gift. These deferred contributions can be unrestricted
or designated to meet donors’ charitable wishes in perpetuity.

You’re badly injured. You’re afraid it’s life-threatening.
You’ve managed to get to the hospital, but no one can
understand what you’re saying. No one even recognizes
the language you’re speaking. How can you ensure
you’re being treated correctly
By requesting an interpreter.
Each year, over 1,000 refugees and thousands of
immigrants arrive in the Buffalo area. They face a
complex array of healthcare and social service systems
that can be difficult to navigate without knowing the
English language.
Inequitable access to services is a denial of human
rights. Federal and state laws mandate that service
providers arrange interpreters for clients, patients
and students who have limited English proficiencies.
Unfortunately, most immigrants and many service
organizations are unaware of these laws.
The International Institute of Buffalo, funded by
a $37,310 grant from the Foundation, has launched a
one-year project to improve immigrant and refugee
access to public services. The program will educate
medical, educational and social service agencies about
legal requirements to provide interpreters and teach
immigrants and refugees learning to speak English
about their right to an interpreter.
Immigrants and refugees who receive timely,
accurate services are far more likely than those who do
not to stay healthy, graduate from school, obtain a job,
become homeowners, and contribute to our culturally
rich community as volunteers, employees, and leaders.

RUBEN BROWN

Ruben Brown worked hard to build a successful
career in pro football as an offensive guard. He spent
six years with the Buffalo Bills and three with the
Chicago Bears and was selected for the NFL ProBowl
nine times. Before he left Buffalo, he established the
Ruben Brown Foundation Fund at the Community
Foundation for Greater Buffalo so he could give back
to the communities where he’s succeeded and help
underprivileged youth.
Many of Ruben’s teammates have started their own
private foundations. Instead, Ruben chose to establish a
fund at the Community Foundation so he could focus
his time and energy on fundraising and directing funds,
rather than on administrative tasks. “The Community
Foundation makes my giving really easy. With them,
I just ‘set it and forget it.’ I work on fundraising and
they take care of all the tax forms, check writing, etc.
Managing charitable funds is their business and I trust
them to handle all the paperwork,” stated Brown.
Each year, the “Ruben Brown Motorcycle Run”
fundraiser is held in Buffalo and Chicago. This year,
they also added a classic car show in each city.
Funds raised are given to nonprofit organizations
throughout the country that focus on enhancing the
lives of youth. One of the organizations that benefits
from Ruben’s fundraising is the Salvation Army. Ruben
used Salvation Army services when he was younger and
knows firsthand how important they are to a child’s
development. People have asked him, “Do you know all
the things they do” His response is a resounding “yes.”
“They have excellent programs for kids including after
school sports and music programs and even summer
camp,” added Ruben. He’s shown here with his

When you walk into the doors of the historic brick
schoolhouse that houses the Locust Street Art Center,
you can’t help but be impressed by the colorful
artwork adorning everything from the walls to the
bench in the hallway.

when she was just 11 years old.
“Locust Street transformed my life,” says Ford.
“Molly Bethel, the Executive Director, helped me get
into the high school I wanted. She taught me about
how to build a portfolio and how to exhibit. I would
never have made it into college and grad school if it
weren’t for her.”
Through a $14,778 grant from the Community
Foundation, Therese returned to Locust Street as a
grant writer in a position shared with El Museo. El
Museo is a storefront gallery on Allen Street that has
some of the same goals, staff and board members
as Locust Street, so collaboration between the two
groups came naturally.
As a contracted grant writer, Therese was able to
give back to the “family” that meant so much to her.
She was able to use what she learned from her 14
years in arts administration and grantwriting to build
a program for contacting corporations, foundations
and individual donors for fundraising.

Apply for a CFGB Competitive Grant
The Foundation is committed to making grants that
have maximum positive impact on Western New
York. 2009 grant information will be posted on our
website at www.cfgb.org when available.
Your organization is eligible to apply for a
grant from the Foundation if it serves one of the
eight counties of Western New York (Allegany,
Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Niagara,
Orleans and Wyoming) and has current 501(c)(3)
status as determined by the Internal Revenue
Service.
Competitive grant requests must address one or
more of the following four focus areas identified in
our five-year strategic plan:
• Increasing economic self-sufficiency for
low-income individuals and families
• Reducing racial and social disparities
• Enhancing and leveraging significant natural,
historic and architectural resources
• Strengthening the region as a center for arts
and culture

Founded in 1854 in Buffalo by Dr. J.C. Bryant as a
“Business Practice Learning Lab,” Bryant & Stratton
has evolved into a comprehensive educational
institution poised for the 21st century, and committed
to the same principles set forth by its founder.
Bryant “By” Prentice III (J.C. Bryant’s great-great
grandson) led a management leveraged buyout of the
college in 1984 and continues today as chairman of
the college. By has championed many of Bryant &
Stratton’s advancements over the past two decades.
“As we moved from the industrial age to the
service and information age, the demand for support
people changed dramatically. Employers are looking
for information-gathering and critical-thinking
skills. Our sector had to respond to these expanded
requirements, so we infused substantial general studies
into our curriculum. Bryant & Stratton has moved
from preparing students for jobs to preparing them for
careers,” explained By.
By and his family have always believed in the
importance of giving back to the community. That’s why
By established the Career Aspirations Scholarship Fund
at the Foundation with shares of Bryant & Stratton stock.
The nearly $11 million fund will award scholarships to
Bryant & Stratton students with unmet financial need.
“By establishing this fund at the Community
Foundation, I can be assured that these funds will
be used to help students with financial need obtain
college degrees for years to come. I know the
Foundation will steward our funds responsibly in

Substantial storm water runoff overwhelms Buffalo’s
sewer infrastructure, causing unsanitary water to
overflow into local creeks and rivers. The resulting
bacteria levels, trash and odors make waterways unfit
for swimming and recreational use, unattractive and, in
many cases, dangerous to our health.
With the support of the Community Foundation’s
$12,500 grant, Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper will
distribute 1,000 rain barrels to residents around Erie
County, greatly reducing rain runoff.
The program’s coordinator, funded by the
Foundation’s grant, will survey participants and report
results, such as the number of gallons of rainwater
prevented from entering Niagara waterways, how
much is being saved by individual homeowners on
water supply costs, and the approximate savings by
local wastewater facilities.
What’s more, Riverkeeper will create a working
relationship between the government and sewer
agencies. It will build residents’ understanding of the
importance of preserving our fresh-water assets and
empower them to reduce their impact on the overflows.
Instructional sessions will be conducted and
brochures will be distributed to all barrel owners
to help them install, use, and care for their barrels
correctly for years to come. Members of the WNY
Stormwater Coalition and local gardening centers
are partnering with Riverkeeper in order to continue
distribution, expansion and funding.

In Memory William Van Schoonhoven
Sadly, 2007 brought the passing of William “Beau” Van
Schoonhoven, who served as Executive Director of the
Foundation (then known as the Buffalo Foundation)
for 17 years. Beau gave his time and talent for the
betterment of the quality of life in Greater Buffalo with
intense dedication as director and prominent community
volunteer. He brought a sense of charity and compassion
to the Foundation seasoned with a touch of humor,
providing hope and love to the citizens of Buffalo. Beau served as President of
the Presbyterian Homes of WNY and the WNY Grantmakers Association and
was an active member in the Gow School Association; Landmark Society; Buffalo
Historical Society and Westminster Presbyterian Church where he served as an
elder. We express our sincere sympathy to Beau’s family and friends for their loss.
