Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ernst Schmachtenberg
Rector of RWTH Aachen University
The support of researchers is essential for RWTH Aachen
University – and in the past years we have often proven
that by saying this we did more than just paying lip
service. A university with such a strong commitment to
excellence like RWTH Aachen University cannot afford to
miss out on the potential offered by highly-skilled female
reseachers.
For several years now we have been witnessing a critical
process leading to a significant lack of specialists in
Germany. Some of our high potentials leave the country
in order to advance in their academic careers in conditions
which appear better than those in Germany. Here at
RWTH Aachen University, we are determined to make an
end to this brain drain through a vast variety of projects
and initiatives. One is the Excellence Initiative by the
Federal Government, promoting and emphasising the
advantages offered by Germany as a top-class location for
higher education and research in order to improve competitiveness
on an international level.
Since 2006 RWTH Aachen University has been successful
in all of the three funding lines of the Excellence
Initiative: with our research school, the Clusters of
Excellence and our institutional strategy “RWTH 2020:
Meeting Global Challenges” we are on our way to build
an integrated and interdisciplinary technical university in
Aachen. Our university faces global challenges and offers
excellent opportunities especially for female researchers
with high ambitions.
One of the three Clusters of Excellence at RWTH Aachen
University is the Cluster of Excellence “Tailor-Made Fuels
from Biomass” (TMFB). Against the background of a
steadily growing demand for energy and at the same time
reduced accessibility to fossil fuels and the problem of
increasing carbon dioxide emissions stemming from their
use, we face one of the biggest challenges of our times. We
are convinced that a possible solution is the combination
of sustainable fuels made from biomass and combustion
engines combusting these fuels without emitting pollutant
emissions, and thus being environmentally friendly.
The fundamental questions arising from this scenario
are to be answered by research. The interdisciplinary
team of researchers from the Cluster of Excellence TMFB
in Aachen deals with this task. Today, already a number
of very successful female researchers are involved in the
Cluster of Excellence, as this brochure demonstrates in an
impressive manner.
We are convinced: In order to find a solution for our challenges
we need researchers like those presented in this
brochure. At RWTH Aachen University the percentage of
female professors has doubled within the last two years
– another positive result of the Excellence Initiative by
the german federal and state governments that paved the
way for further junior professorships and thus attracted
excellent young researchers to our university.
In spite of the positive developments mentioned above
we have not yet reached our goal of equal distribution of
women and men over all disciplines and all stages of an
academic career. What we need are role models!
In this brochure you can find them. The presented researchers
and their scientific work offer a variety of personalised
arguments for research and show that scientific,
technical and interdisciplinary research can be multifaceted,
innovative, thrilling and offering a promising future.
We hope to be able to excite you with our mission. Start
your academic career with us – for a joint future.
Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. E. Schmachtenberg
Rector of RWTH Aachen University
Ernst Schmachtenberg
Potenzial hoch qualifizierter Forscherinnen verzichten.
an Fachkräften steht.
Zukunftskonzept „RWTH 2020: Meeting Global Challenges“
Verwendung verbundenen CO 2
- Problematik erwächst
eine der größten gesellschaftlichen Herausforderungen
unserer Zeit. Wir sehen ein Lösungsszenario hierzu in
der Synthese nachhaltiger Kraftstoffe aus Biomasse und
der Entwicklung von Verbrennungsmotoren, die diese
Kraftstoffe schadstofffrei verbrennen.
Die grundsätzlichen Fragestellungen in diesem Szenario
müssen erforscht werden. Dieser Aufgabe widmet sich
das interdisziplinäre Aachener Forschungsteam des
Exzellenzclusters TMFB. Schon heute sind sehr erfolgreiche
Wissenschaftlerinnen in diesen Forschungscluster
Vorbilder!
Univ.-Prof. Heather Hofmeister, Ph.D.
Human Resources Management, RWTH Aachen University
As Vice-Rector of Human Resources Management
and Development at RWTH Aachen University
and Professor of Sociology with a focus on Gender
Studies and Life Course Research my aim is to
combine both responsibilites in order to create synergies
that are beneficial for our university in the
long run. I develop precise solutions concerning
problems of unequal gender distribution within
science and research like i.e. career problems,
low(er) appreciation and gender specific prejudices
in evaluation processes. RWTH Aachen University
tries to attract more women for science. By now,
the percentage of female students at our university
accounts to more than 30 percent. Every fourth
position of the academic staff at RWTH Aachen
is filled by a woman and the percentage of female
professors accounts to 10 percent at the beginning
of 2010.
When looking at specific disciplines it becomes
clear that women are still under-represented especially
in engineering and science. Also in these
disciplines women are an important resource,
their abilities and competencies should no longer
remain unused. Often the development of innovative
and sustainable technical solutions lack
the creative input of women. Anyway in medium
and long term the need for highly-skilled staff
cannot only be met by male graduates. Demographic
change demands new approaches in terms
of equal participation of women in research and
social development.
A very positive example is the Cluster of Excellence
“Tailor-Made Fuels from Biomass”. Innovative
ideas are implemented in interdisciplinary
teams by female and male researchers alike. This
is the key to sustainable solutions that are essential
for the future of our society.
Therefore, we have to continue to inspire female
researchers to pursue technical and scientific
research. We depend on YOU! Contribute your
ideas, your innovations and your know-how and
be inspired by this brochure!
Jede
vierte Stelle des wissenschaftlichen Personals an der
RWTH Aachen University ist durch eine Wissenschaftlerin
besetzt – und auch der Anteil der Professorinnen
steigt stetig.
Allerdings zeigt sich bei genauer Betrachtung einzelner
Disziplinen, dass Frauen vor allem in technischen
und naturwissenschaftlichen Bereichen immer noch
stark unterrepräsentiert sind. Auch in diesen Themenfeldern
sind Frauen eine wichtige Bereicherung, ihre
Fähigkeiten und Kompetenzen dürfen nicht länger
ungenutzt bleiben. Nicht selten fehlt der „weiblichkreative“
Blick bei der Entwicklung innovativer und
nachhaltiger technischer Lösungen. Der Bedarf an
qualifizierten Fachkräften kann mittel- und langfristig
ohnehin nicht allein durch männliche Absolventen
gedeckt werden. Der demographische Wandel zwingt
uns zu Veränderungen im Sinne einer gleichberechtigten
Partizipation von Frauen an Forschungsaufgaben
und der gesellschaftlichen Entwicklung.
Ein sehr positives Beispiel ist das Exzellenzcluster
„Tailor-Made Fuels from Biomass“. Innovative Ideen
werden durch die Zusammenarbeit von Wissenschaftlerinnen
und Wissenschaftlern gemeinsam und
interdisziplinär realisiert. Das ist der Schlüssel zu den
nachhaltigen Lösungen, die in Zukunft von grundlegender
Bedeutung für unsere Gesellschaft sind.
Deshalb dürfen wir nicht aufhören, Wissenschaftlerinnen
für technische und naturwissenschaftliche
Forschungsfelder zu begeistern. Wir sind auf SIE
angewiesen! Bringen Sie Ihre Ideen, Ihre Innovationen
The Cluster of Excellence “Tailor-Made Fuels from
Biomass” (TMFB) at the RWTH Aachen University
follows an interdisciplinary approach for the research of
new biomass-based fuels. This poses a challenge for
chemo- and biocatalysis, chemical engineering, combustion
research and engine technology. Since joint
efforts are necessary to investigate these challenges,
researchers from both the natural and engineering
sciences are working together closely in the Cluster of
Excellence TMFB.
Der Exzellenzcluster „Maßgeschneiderte Kraftstoffe aus
Biomasse“ (TMFB) an der RWTH Aachen University
verfolgt einen interdisziplinären Ansatz zur Erforschung
neuer Kraftstoffe auf Basis von Biomasse. Das Vorhaben
bildet eine gemeinsame Herausforderung für die Chemound
Biokatalyse, die Verfahrenstechnik, die Verbrennungsforschung
sowie die Motorentechnik. Im Exzellenzcluster
TMFB arbeiten Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler
aus natur- und ingenieurwissenschaftlichen Disziplinen
daher eng zusammen.
Stefan Pischinger
“By the interdisciplinary nature of the TMFB-cluster and the
highly topical field of research we are working in, we hope to
attract even more women to technical research fields.”
Besides the aim of the Excellence Initiative to increase
the international visibility of German universities,
one main objective is the improvement of career and
funding opportunities for young scientists in Germany.
As coordinator of the Cluster of Excellence TMFB, it is
very important for me to create such excellent conditions
for the staff of the TMFB cluster.
Our goal is to use and develop the high creative potential
which stems from the interdisciplinary nature of the
cluster for the good of our future. To enable a physical
proximity between the different research groups, the
Fuel Design Center of the RWTH Aachen University
was set up.
This publication shows that the number of female
researchers is still significantly higher in the natural
sciences than in the engineering sciences. With the
brochure “Through women’s eyes”, we would like to
promote the attractiveness of the Cluster of Excellence
TMFB especially for young and talented female
researchers, and to increase their interest in current
questions in the natural and engineering sciences. By
the interdisciplinary nature of the TMFB-cluster and
the highly topical field of research we are working in,
we hope to attract even more women to the technical
research fields.
I would like to thank all participants who are presented
in this brochure, and I hope that we can inspire you for
our research work in the Cluster of Excellence. Please
do not hesitate to contact us if you are interested in
joining our team!
“Tailor-Made Fuels from Biomass”
interessieren.
Biofuels –
sustainable mobility based on biomass
Fuels derived from biomass offer considerable potential
for the usage in mobile applications – besides a
reduction of carbon dioxide emissions which have an
effect on our climate, they can also significantly decrease
engine pollutant emissions such as soot and
nitrogen oxides. Scientists in the Cluster of Excellence
“Tailor-Made Fuels from Biomass” are researching
the production as well as the combustion of new
biofuels. The long term goal is the optimisation of the
entire process chain from the biomass to the combustion
engine, if possible without competing with the
food chain. This will make an important contribution
to a sustainable mobility of the future.
To achieve the research goals, three fields of research
have been defined in the Cluster of Excellence:
Molecular transformation, Reaction and process
engineering for biorenewables and Fuel injection and
combustion. These fields of research are interlinked
with two interdisciplinary core interaction fields: Fuel
design and Physical and chemical property modelling.
Biokraftstoffe –
The close collaboration of scientists from the natural sciences,
mathematics, chemical and mechanical engineering
within the Cluster of Excellence “Tailor-Made Fuels from
generation of biofuels. These biofuels, in contrast to most of
today’s biofuels, will not be competing with the food chain.
Die enge Zusammenarbeit der Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler
aus den Gebieten der Naturwissenschaften, der Verfahrenstechnik
// Milestones
I consider the completion of my doctorate in 2009
and – within the TMFB-cluster – the development and
production of FhuA protein variants for different strategies
of coupling the metal-catalyst as the most important
milestones of my career so far. Furthermore, I was able to
optimize the FhuA protein purification-methods leading to
a considerably increased yield.
// Goals
In the future I want to continue my work in the fields of
biotechnology and life-science, focussing on research,
development and teaching.
// Requirements
Solid basic knowledge (especially, but not only in the field
of sciences) as well as social competence, willingness to
communicate and a healthy self criticism (above
all critical evaluation of your own scientific results). Also,
an increased tolerance of frustration is useful in science.
// Chances
Generally speaking a lot has improved in gender equality
in the last decades. When it comes to the reconcilability
of job and family women nowadays have a number of
possibilities to avoid an interruption or even a termination
of their careers.
// Ziele
Meine nächsten Ziele sehe ich in den Bereichen „Life
in Forschung, Entwicklung und Lehre setzen will.
// Voraussetzungen
The aim of my work is to produce genetically engineered
yeast strains which express cellulolytic enzymes on
their cell surface. These enzymes then bind to the cellulose
and are able to degrade it.
// Milestones
I established methods used for the determination of cellulolytic
activity of enzymes embedded on the cell surface.
// Goals
The first goal to be achieved is the successful completion
of my Ph.D. degree. Afterwards I would like to find an
employment in science or industry.
// Requirements
Probably the most important requirements for a successful
scientific career nowadays are, in my opinion, patience,
a very high stress resistance and the ability to
stay open minded.
// Chances
To my mind women will be able to find employment
opportunities in science. However, I believe that
it will be a lot harder for women to find very promising
positions in science than it will be for men.
// Aufgaben
// Meilensteine
Ich konnte Methoden etablieren, welche der Bestimmung
cellulolytischer Aktivitäten auf der Zelloberfläche dienen.
// Ziele
“Imagination is more important
(Albert Einstein)
// Tasks
Since November 2009, I have been working as junior professor
for biocatalysis at RWTH Aachen University on the
usage of oxygenases in biocatalysis. Those enzymes are
especially interesting because they can introduce oxygen
from the air directly into substrates. Because I just got my
position at the RWTH Aachen University recently, I am
not yet working on a concrete project within the Cluster of
Excellence TMFB. However, I do see much potential in the
field of enzymatic processing and utilization of lignin and
lignin degradation products for the extraction of potential
biofuels.
// Milestones
The biggest milestone of my scientific career so far has
been the award of one of only eight junior professorships
within the Excellence Initiative of RWTH Aachen University.
This is an immense opportunity for me because I
cannot only start my own working group in the next years,
but furthermore I have the possibility to creatively and
independently research innovative ideas.
// Goals
My next professional aim is a positive evaluation as junior
professor in three years from now to continue my professorship
at university. To reach that aim, I have to build up
my own group of creative employees in order to successfully
work on innovative research topics. Furthermore, I’d
like to expand my scientific network to find collaboration
partners for future projects.
// Requirements
To be scientifically successful, it is very important to have
good ideas and to be creative, which is the basis for every
innovation. Additionally, as a scientist, you must be able
to sell your ideas and results to get further funding for
projects from possible sponsors. Furthermore, contacts to
other scientists play an important role, because collaboration
projects are extremely important in the natural sciences
to comprehensively work on current issues. It can also be
extremely helpful to have a mentor who supports you personally
and who encourages you to grow beyond yourself.
// Chances
I believe that in the upcoming years more and more women
will be appointed professors in technical and scientific
disciplines which will encourage young female researchers
to follow their example. In the long run, the research landscape
will change considerably – also and particularly in
male-dominated departments. I feel certain of this.
// Aufgaben
// Meilensteine
// Ziele
aufbaue. Zudem möchte ich mein Netzwerk weiter
ausbauen, um Kooperationspartner für zukünftige Projekte
zu finden.
// Voraussetzungen
selbst hinauszuwachsen.
// Chancen
Professuren erhalten, was jüngere Wissenschaftlerinnen
ermutigen wird, ihrem Beispiel zu folgen. Langfristig wird
sich dadurch die Wissenschaftslandschaft deutlich verändern
– auch und gerade in den bisher Männer-dominierten
Fachbereichen. Davon bin ich überzeugt.
// Milestones
Within the past years I was able to build up my own
working group, from which several publications and
diploma theses have developed. Furthermore, the awarding
of the Jochen Block prize of the German Society for
Catalysis and being awarded the junior professorship by
the Robert Bosch Foundation were important personal
experiences.
// Goals
Together with my team I hope to be able to further
strengthen our scientific profile and to make a valuable
contribution to current issues.
// Requirements
Apart from professional qualifications, a scientific career
certainly calls for creativity and commitment as well as
for the required endurance and the ability to intelligibly
present results to all. In addition, interdisciplinary work
gains in importance and puts new challenges on the
scientists’ communication skills.
// Chances
The future prospects are excellent. Especially in places
where different areas of expertise overlap efficient communication
becomes more and more important. In the
course of this, very good team and communication skills
are necessary in addition to an outstanding scientific
qualification. Interdisciplinary project teams require a
high degree of discipline by all participants to cut back
their specific terminology to the benefit of a common
communication basis in order to ensure a solution-oriented
and efficient exchange between the disciplines.
// Aufgaben
Meine Arbeitsgruppe befasst sich mit der Synthese
neuartiger fester Katalysatoren für die effiziente Nutzung
erneuerbarer Ressourcen und der Entwicklung von
Verfahren zur Umsetzung von Biomasse in Chemikalien
und Treibstoffe.
// Meilensteine
// Ziele
// Voraussetzungen
Neben fachlicher Qualifikation erfordert eine wissenschaftliche
Karriere sicherlich Kreativität und Einsatz
ebenso wie das nötige Durchhaltevermögen und die
Fähigkeit, Ergebnisse allgemeinverständlich aufzubereiten.
Daneben gewinnt die interdisziplinäre Arbeit an
Bedeutung und stellt neue Herausforderungen an die
Kommunikationsfähigkeiten der Wissenschaftlerinnen
und Wissenschaftler.
// Chancen
Die Zukunftsaussichten sind hervorragend. Insbesondere
die effiziente Kommunikation an Schnittstellen verschiedener
Fachbereiche gewinnt zunehmend an Bedeutung.
// Tasks
The aim of my work is to find genes which are
involved in the itaconic acid (ITA) synthesis
pathway in the basidiomycetous corn pathogen Ustilago
maydis. Furthermore I want to enhance the production
of this platform molecule using methods of genetical
engineering.
// Aufgaben
maispathogenen Brandpilz Ustilago maydis beteiligt
sind. Des Weiteren versuche ich, mit Hilfe gentechnischer
Methoden einen Stamm herzustellen, der diese Plattform-
Chemikalie effizienter produziert als der Wildtypstamm.
// Milestones
A relatively high-yield wild type strain of Ustilago maydis,
which is able to produce ITA, was found and the conditions
for the ITA production were optimized. Moreover, in
order to clarify the ITA synthesis pathway and to be able
to increase its production, a gene involved in the ITA
synthesis pathway has been studied in detail.
// Goals
My very first aim is to successfully obtain my Ph.D.
degree and later I would like to find a well-paid position
in industry.
// Requirements
The most important requirements for a scientific career
nowadays are, to my mind, patience, inventive talent and
very high frustration tolerance.
// Chances
I think that it is possible for women to find employment
and occupy good positions at universities. However, it
might be more difficult in industry.
// Meilensteine
Ein Ustilago-maydis-Wildtypstamm, der ITA bereits relativ
effizient produziert, konnte entdeckt werden. Die Bedingungen
für die ITA-Produktion mit diesem Stamm wurden
optimiert.
// Ziele
// Voraussetzungen
Die wohl wichtigsten Voraussetzungen für eine wissenschaftliche
Karriere sind meiner Meinung nach vor allem
Geduld, Erfindergeist und eine sehr hohe Frustrationstoleranz.
// Chancen
// Milestones
After successful completion of my Bachelor- and Masterstudies
at four different universities and one research
institution, I started my Ph.D. studies at the end of 2009
as research assistant at the Institute for Biotechnology.
Even though I am just at the beginning of my research,
I was already able to reach some important milestones;
e.g. the design and expression of my modified membrane
protein.
// Goals
I would like to bring my research task and my doctorate
in the hybrid-catalyst project to an efficient and successful
and my intercultural skills once again. Following
on the one hand I think that it would be very interesting
// Ziele
// Milestones
Since the beginning of the project in 2009 I have
designed an experimental set-up on a laboratory scale
the patent application for the utilised membrane
// Goals
In the future I would like to test more membranes in
terms of fouling susceptibility and permeability. There
are plans to publish the joint results from the tests using
the membrane process.
// Requirements
For a scientific career you must be able to work autonomously,
to develop and purposefully pursue ideas as well
// Chances
At present, women are being strongly promoted in the
successful in science are very high. Nevertheless, on the
women’s part some capabilities are called upon, not least
the willingness to compromise, for example concerning
planning a family.
// Aufgaben
// Meilensteine
diesem Jahr geplant. Die Patentierung zu dem eingesetzten
Membranverfahren ist bereits angemeldet und steht
kurz vor der Veröffentlichung.
// Ziele
Zukünftig möchte ich weitere Membranen hinsichtlich
Foulinganfälligkeit und Permeabilität testen. Es ist geplant,
die gemeinsamen Versuchsergebnisse aus den Versuchen
mit dem Membranverfahren zu veröffentlichen.
// Voraussetzungen
// Chancen
I wish I could say I won a Nobel Prize but I have only
earned my bachelor‘s and master‘s degrees.
// Goals
As part of my doctoral studies, I intend to write and
publish papers detailing aspects of my research as a
contribution to the scientific community. Eventually, I
would like to work in industry and work on the application
of theoretical or small scale research. Another goal
would be to keep a good work-life balance throughout
my career, since there is more to life than only working.
Having this balance will also help my professional career
and bring in fresh ideas.
// Requirements
I think the most important requirement for a successful
scientific career is having a genuine interest in the field.
As the late Randy Pausch said in his famous Last Lecture
(at Carnegie Mellon University): ‘But remember, the
brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are not
there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us
a chance to show how badly we want something.
Because the brick walls are there to stop the people who
don’t want it badly enough. They’re there to stop the
other people.’
// Chances
The future of other female colleagues in engineering,
science, and interdisciplinary disciplines is very bright.
They have many recources at their disposal. There are
organizations and initiatives that encourage women to
become interested in these disciplines such as this brochure.
It is a matter of getting motivated and involved.
// Aufgaben
Im Exzellenzcluster „Maßgeschneiderte Kraftstoffe aus
Biomasse“ wird der enzymatische Abbau von Lignin
behandelt. Dieser wird die Ionische-Flüssigkeiten-Zellulose-Route
unterstützen, so dass sowohl die Lösung von
Lignocellulose in ionischen Flüssigkeiten verbessert als
auch die Trennung von Hemicellulosen und Zellulosen
und deren Weiterverarbeitung vereinfacht wird.
// Meilensteine
// Ziele
Forschung in kleinem Rahmen arbeiten.
// Voraussetzungen
berühmten „Last Lecture“ (an der Carnegie Mellon University)
// Chancen
Man muss
// Tasks
In the Cluster of Excellence, reaction systems with two
liquid phases are being analysed. Here separators are
used in order to efficiently separate biphasic systems. The
occurring systems show an increased viscosity and a
residual loading with suspended particles. My task is the
optimization of the design concept which is applicable for
such system characteristics.
// Milestones
By means of a new measurement technology, through
an Atomic Force Microscope, I analyse the interactions in
relation to the distance of two drops, the deformations of
the drops during the processes of approximation and repulsion
under the influences of solid impurities and high
viscosity. The results serve for the modeling of a separator
to be used in industry (liquid-liquid-separation).
// Goals
My next goal is a doctorate. After that I would like to work
at a Chinese university. I hope that the scientific exchange
between Germany and China can be improved.
// Requirements
I think that good supervision by the professor, good technical
erhöhte Viskosität und eine Restbeladung mit Schwebstoffen
auf. Meine Aufgabe ist die Optimierung des Auslegungskonzeptes,
das für solche Systemeigenschaften
geeignet ist.
// Meilensteine
Ich untersuche mittels einer neuen Messtechnologie durch
ein Atomic Force Microscope die Wechselwirkungen in
der Abhängigkeit des Abstands zwischen zwei Tropfen,
die Deformationen der Tropfen während des Vorgangs
von Annäherung und Abstoßung unter dem Einfluss
von Feststoffverunreinigungen und hoher Viskosität. Die
Ergebnisse dienen zur Modellierung eines Abscheiders
für die Anwendung in der Industrie (Flüssig-Flüssig-
// Tasks
Together with several scientific co-workers I work on
projects in the field of biocatalysis in unconventional
reaction systems. We pursue a new approach for the pretreatment
of lignocellulosic biomass with ionic liquids.
Therefore, we explore the interactions between pretreatment,
(ligno-)cellulose and enzymatic decomposition.
// Milestones
We succeeded in the rigorously mechanical modelling
of enzymatic reactions and in their transfer between
different enzymes, solvents or reaction systems. We will
continue to work on this concept for the analysis of the
decomposition of the biopolymer in the cluster.
// Goals
With the help of my research in the cluster I want to
contribute to the quantitative description, prediction and
optimizing of biocatalysts and reaction systems for the
decomposition of specific biomass substrates. In the
long run I want to transfer this strategy to whole biosynthetic
networks and promote the mechanistic modelling
of the protein catalyst.
// Tasks
I am working on the development of a new prediction
method of substance properties. The purpose of this
method is to assist in easily and quickly predicting the
thermodynamic properties of new fuel components.
In order to systematically analyse the influence of the
molecular structure on the thermodynamic quantities I am
using molecular dynamics simulations. The main focus of
my analysis is the influence of multiple OH groups which
often are present in biobased molecules.
// Milestones
Until now I have assessed the existing methods of group
contribution in detail in order to learn about their strengths
and weaknesses. After that I have chosen and tested the
appropriate molecular dynamics software. Moreover the
software package was modified, allowing me to analyze
the effect of the molecular structure on selected thermochemic
quantities.
// Goals
It is my goal to successfully complete my doctorate. After
that I would like to continue my career in the industry.
// Requirements
In my opinion they are endurance and self-motivation. I
also find the ability to work independently and in a sustainable
matter very important. A necessary dose of curiosity
and the self-reliance to find new paths also needs to be
added to that.
I see the future prospects for female young researchers
very brightly. As interdisciplinarity can be found more and
more within all scientific fields, the role of the female staff
This is because they can adapt faster and more easily, and
therefore work better and more efficiently in the interdisciplinary
environment.
// Milestones
So far, we transferred methods of metabolic flux analysis
to reaction systems and proved that this concept is
feasible. I presented those first results at conferences and
right now I am working on a journal paper.
// Goals
My next major goal is my Ph.D., but before there are a lot
of open questions to be answered, for example the integration
of an automatic generation procedures for reaction
networks. After my Ph.D., I will probably start working
for a chemical company.
// Requirements
For me the most important requirement is to enjoy scientific
work: to identify open questions, to analyze problems
and to develop solution strategies. It is essential
to have fundamental knowledge in the own and related
interdisciplinary fields and the ability to discuss ideas
and results with other people. And finally, you need to
have a long-lasting motivation and to believe in yourself.
// Chances
I think for both male and female engineers it is difficult
to start a scientific career, especially in Germany. But
of course, you can succeed, if you offer the qualities
needed.
// Meilensteine
// Ziele
die Berücksichtigung von Ansätzen zur automatischen
Generierung von Reaktionsnetzwerken. Nach meiner Promotion
werde ich wahrscheinlich für ein großes Chemieunternehmen
arbeiten.
// Voraussetzungen
glauben.
// Chancen
Exzellenzclusters TMFB. Mein Projekt ist ein Teil der Holz-
Bioraffinerieroute des Exzellenzclusters. Es geht dabei um
die enzymatische Hydrolyse der Lignocellulose nach einer
Vorbehandlung in ionischen Flüssigkeiten (IL).
// Meilensteine
Resultaten basiert. Zudem bemühe ich mich um eine
interdisziplinäre Weiterqualifikation, indem ich ergänzende
Vorlesungen und Soft-Skill-Seminare besuche.
// Ziele
// Requirements
Intercultural competence is one of the most important
requirements for scientific research and successful cooperations.
Furthermore, scientists should learn early how to
organize and effectively use workflows and their time. I
believe that international experience is very important, too.
// Chances
Being a scientist means creativity and full commitment.
The same also applies to family. That’s the reason why
new, creative solutions for the reconcilability of work and
family are needed. Because of my own experience in the
Cluster of Excellence TMFB I am very optimistic with
regard to the future prospects of women in technical and
scientific professions.
// Voraussetzungen
Die interkulturelle Kompetenz ist eine der wichtigsten
Voraussetzungen für wissenschaftliche Forschung und erfolgreiche
Kooperationen. Außerdem sollten Wissenschaftler
frühzeitig lernen, ihre Arbeitsabläufe und Zeit effektiver
zu gestalten. Ich halte auch die internationale Erfahrung
für höchst relevant.
// Chancen
Wissenschaftler zu sein bedeutet Kreativität und vollen
// Tasks
My task in the cluster is to develop a mechanical pulping
process for lignocellulosic biomass. Since pre-treatment
makes biomass accessible to any further solution and
chemical or enzymatic transformation, it is an important
and essential step for the entire downstream processes.
// Milestones
During the course of my education, I became enthusiastic
for research work. The Cluster of Excellence TMFB
provides me with a unique opportunity to apply what I
have learned from the textbooks directly to a promising
research project. In order to reach the goal of my project
step by step, I set up stage goals with target dates, along
with detailed methods to achieve each milestone in time.
In cooperation with an industrial partner, an experimental
setup has been built up and experiments have been
performed on biomass. My most important milestone
reached to date was the experimental validation of the
general feasibility of my targeted process for comminution
of wooden biomass.
// Aufgaben
// Meilensteine
Mein wichtigster Meilenstein bisher
ist die experimentelle Bestätigung der Machbarkeit des
angestrebten Prozesses für den Holzaufschluss.
// Goals
To further develop my skills in the field of process
engineering, I treat achieving a Ph.D. degree as my
next immediate goal. Along with the Ph.D. program, I
would like to take the opportunity of further education
to expand the skills I learned during my education and
directly apply them to scientific research projects. More
importantly, I want to see my positive contributions to
the research projects.
// Requirements
First of all, one must be able to identify new opportunities,
look at existing problems from a completely new
angle and challenge existing conclusions. Creativity and
reliability are also equally important. After all, the ability
to structure complex tasks, develop innovative ideas, and
subsequently define and reach goals is fundamental for
any successful research. A scientist needs to have the
ability to work in a team, to communicate with colleagues,
and to be independent.
// Chances
Women are just as good as men in technical, scientific
and interdisciplinary disciplines. They can often provide
unique ideas and look at problems from a different angle.
Those ideas and angles can sometimes provide complementary
or even more efficient solutions than men.
// Ziele
Forschungsprojekt nutze. Noch wichtiger ist mir, dass sich
meine positiven Beiträge in dem Projekt widerspiegeln.
// Voraussetzungen
Zuallererst muss man neue Möglichkeiten identifizieren,
// Chancen
Integrated Research Field 3 (IRF-3)
Fuel Injection and Combustion
The Integrated Research Field “Fuel Injection and Combustion” looks at ways to reshape the engine
combustion process for new, tailor-made fuels from biomass. As the fuels which are being
examined are considerably different to conventional fuels, new combustion processes can be
developed which combine the benefits of clean combustion with the Otto engine with the high
degree of efficiency of a diesel engine.
miteinander verbinden.
the efficiency of the new tailor-made fuels for the lowtemperature
combustion.
// Milestones
I was accepted as scholarship holder by one of the research
schools of the Cluster of Excellence TMFB. The
first results of experiments were presented in a speech.
Furthermore, I gave an Introduction Lecture.
// Goals
My doctorate is my next big aim. Meanwhile I want
to present my results at international conferences and
thereby establish contacts with scientists who work on
similar subjects. The founding and intensification of an
international network is a matter of great importance
to me. It would be very interesting for me to go abroad
after my doctorate and to continue working there as a
post-doc in my area of research.
// Requirements
A prerequisite for a doctorate, which is the first step of
a scientific career, is a solid scientific education. For
a doctorate you should be able to motivate yourself,
because you have to work autonomously and independently.
Nevertheless, the ability to work in a team is
very important, because you are always dependent on
the wealth of experience of your colleagues.
// Chances
The opportunities for young female researchers have
never been better. Female students should take advantage
of the many funding programmes by universities,
// Ziele
// Voraussetzungen
Grundvoraussetzung für eine Promotion und damit den
ersten Schritt einer wissenschaftlichen Karriere ist eine
fundierte theoretische Ausbildung. Wer promovieren
// Chancen
Die Chancen für den weiblichen wissenschaftlichen
I investigate the flow activities and burn procedures
inside the engine in detail with the help of numeric
simulations. Furthermore I deal with the influence of
tailor-made fuels on these procedures. Therefore I first
have to develop an appropriate flow solver so I can later
apply it to this highly complex problem.
// Milestones
The first small milestones of my work as research
assistant in the TMFB were my first own conference
contribution and of course the continuous finishing of
subtasks on my way to the simulation of the internal
// Goals
My next mid-term aim is the doctoral thesis on the
subject I work on within the TMFB. However, I’m still at
the beginning of my scientific career and will certainly
need some more time to achieve my research goals.
// Requirements
Definitely very important are persistence, curiosity,
a certain frustration tolerance and a high degree of
very good. I have always received positive reactions
for being an engineer, e.g. during my internships and
of course now at my work for the TMFB. Women are
especially wanted in the male-dominated fields like
mechanical engineering.
// Aufgaben
Verbrennungsvorgänge innerhalb des Motors mittels
numerischer Simulationen und befasse mich mit dem
Vorgänge. Dafür muss ich zunächst einen geeigneten
Strömungslöser weiterentwickeln, um ihn später auf dieses
hochkomplexe Problem anwenden zu können.
// Meilensteine
// Ziele
Erreichen meiner Forschungsziele.
// Voraussetzungen
// Chancen
Ich schätze die Zukunftsaussichten für den weiblichen
Within the scope of my diploma thesis I dealt with
the development of innovative fuel key figures for the
description of the combustion and emissions characteristics
of tailor made fuels. From August 2010 I will
work as research assistant at the Chair of Internal
TMFB Excellence Cluster, take care of the topic of
combustion process development for alternative fuels in
diesel engines.
// Milestones
My last milestone was the completion of my diploma
thesis. Now I am looking forward to my first scientific
tasks as research assistant at the beginning of my
scientific career.
// Goals
I would like to work my way into my assigned projects
quickly and to contribute my knowledge to the handling
of projects. At the same time I would like to expand my
knowledge on the fields of diesel combustion process
development and alternative fuels and to pass it to
students through teaching.
// Requirements
Of prime importance is taking joy in research and
scientific working. Here the focus should not be on
the future salary. Already while studying one should
gain experience abroad by an internship or a semester
abroad. It is crucial to be capable of taking decisions
quickly and, of course, to be able to work in a team.
// Chances
Nowadays it has become easier for women to gain a
foothold in technical professions. But already while they
are still at school technical or scientific careers must be
promoted more energetically. The female young researchers
must be given the possibility to reconcile family
// Aufgaben
// Meilensteine
wissenschaftlichen Laufbahn.
// Ziele
// Voraussetzungen
Arbeiten. Hier sollte nicht das spätere Gehalt
im Fokus stehen. Schon während des Studiums sollten
Auslandserfahrungen durch ein Praktikum oder Auslandssemester
gewonnen werden. Wichtig ist, schnell Entscheidungen
treffen zu können, und natürlich Teamfähigkeit.
// Chancen
Frauen können in technischen Berufen heutzutage leichter
Fuß fassen. Doch muss schon während der Schulzeit
mehr für einen technischen bzw. naturwissenschaftlichen
// Tasks
Within the scope of the Cluster of Excellence subproject
I will work on the development of a test strategy for a
comprehensive risk assessment of biofuels within the
next few years.
// Milestones
One of the milestones in my scientific career up to date
was the successful completion of a literature review on
an excellence cluster subproject. The results have already
been presented at the German-American Frontiers
of Science (GAFOS) workshop 2010 of the Humboldt
foundation and the US National Academy of Science.
// Goals
I would like to successfully complete my doctorate within
the scope of a TMFB project over the following years. In
this context it is my goal to create a useful and integrated
test strategy for the assessment of the environmental
impact of biofuels. Aside from that I could envisage working
in the industry or for the government in the future.
// Requirements
It is very important in research to have a strong interest
in new questions newly arising. In addition, a high
tolerance of frustration and the capacity for teamwork in
interdisciplinary questions are required. A collaboratively
obtained, best possible result can only be achieved if you
are able to understand problems of other disciplines and
furthermore to link these to your own research field.
// Chancen
The situation of women in science will further improve.
At present there are still improvements necessary,
especially in the childcare sector, in order to enhance the
chances for women to fill management positions in the
future.
// Aufgaben
Biokraftstoffen arbeiten.
// Meilensteine
Ein Meilenstein meiner bisherigen wissenschaftlichen
Karriere war der erfolgreiche Abschluss einer Literaturstudie
zu einem Teilprojekt des Exzellenzclusters. Die
Ergebnisse wurden bereits auf dem German-American
Frontiers of Science (GAFOS)-Workshop 2010 der
Humboldt-Stiftung und der US National Academy of
Science präsentiert.
// Ziele
// Voraussetzungen
Ein starkes Interesse an neu aufkommenden Fragestellungen
ist in der Forschung sehr wichtig. Hinzu kommen eine
hohe Frustrationstoleranz und Teamfähigkeit bei interdisziplinären
Fragstellungen.
// Chancen
weiterhin verbessern. Derzeit sind noch insbesondere im
Bereich der Kinderbetreuung Verbesserungen notwendig,
damit zukünftig verstärkt Frauen Führungspositionen
besetzen können.
// Tasks
Within the scope of the TMFB cluster, I am concentrating
on the development and analysis of mathematical
models which are intended to support the experimental
work of chemists. I am responsible for the collection of
experimental data from laboratory tests, the creation of
the statistical analysis plan and its validation.
// Milestones
The concept of exploratory analysis of chemical data
always fascinated me. In order to acquire relevant skills
and experience I studied both Chemistry and Information
Technology.
// Goals
I would like to go on focussing on quantitative information
management in Chemistry. For that, the introduction
of data mining methods into chemical research is
of increasing importance. My strong point is to offer
chemical know how as well as statistical modelling
from a single source.
// Requirements
Of course, you have to be excited about research and
teaching and provide good time management skills, as
well as social compatibility. You should also be prepared
to cope with defeat every now and then.
// Chances
I see the future prospects of the female young researcher
just as I see the prospects of male young researchers
– they require intelligence, creativity, diligence,
passion for science and pleasure in team work. Being
a female researcher you can go on working, and work
effectively, even as a parent, if you bring distinct organisational
abilities.
// Aufgaben
Validierung verantwortlich.
// Meilensteine
Das Konzept von exploratorischen Untersuchungen
chemischer Daten hat mich immer fasziniert. Um entsprechende
Kenntnisse und Erfahrungen zu sammeln, habe
ich parallel Chemie und Informatik studiert.
// Ziele
Ich möchte mich weiter auf quantitatives Informationsmanagement
in der Chemie konzentrieren. Dafür ist die
Einführung von data-mining-Methoden in die chemische
Forschung von zunehmender Bedeutung. Meine Stärke
ist, chemisches Know-how und statistische Modellierung
aus einer Hand anzubieten.
// Voraussetzungen
mitbringen. Man sollte auch dazu bereit sein,
hin und wieder eine Niederlage zu verkraften.
// Chancen
// Tasks
I am Deputy Head of the Centre for Learning and Knowledge
Management and the Department of Information
Management in Mechanical Engineering (ZLW/IMA)
of the RWTH Aachen and Cooperation and Supplementary
Manager (CSM) of the Cluster of Excellence
TMFB. Together with my team, I support the transfer
of knowledge within the cluster, for example through
the scorecard based survey of cluster members and
a knowledge map, as well as measures to encourage
interdisciplinary cooperation.
// Milestones
The last, big milestone was the habilitation at the
Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at RWTH Aachen
University. For the last three years, I have been working
there as an adjunct professor with the compulsory lecture
“Communication and Organisational Development”
for the first semester in mechanical engineering.
// Goals
During the next years I would like to contribute to the
our university‘s big objectives: to create efficient structures
as well as to enhance excellence in research and
education. Especially for my institute: to acquire and
carry out successfully innovative and interdisciplinary
topics from basic to applied research. This also includes
becoming even more international and offering the best
young researchers good career oportunities.
// Requirements
Excellent expertise of course, combined with enjoying
the work, and the ability to sell this enjoyment. A
realistic self-assessment, because I have seen many
young people come unstuck there. Self-initiative and
willingness to cooperate, as there are hardly any topics
left that can be successfully tackled alone or within one
discipline. Responsibility, because today the greatest
chances to stand alone are competitive. And, naturally,
the ability to grasp opportunities.
// Chances
In many ways female research skills are desperately
needed, as the decision-makers in universities and the
economy know. There are alternative career paths which
open up many different chances within a research landscape
of the highest level – for example within the Cluster
of Excellence TMFB of the RWTH Aachen University.
// Aufgaben
Ich bin stellvertretende Institutsdirektorin des Zentrums
für Lern- und Wissensmanagement, Lehrstuhl Informationsmanagement
im Maschinenbau, und Cooperation and
Supplementary Manager des Exzellenzclusters „Tailor-Made
Fuels from Biomass“. Gemeinsam mit meinem Team
fördern wir den Wissenstransfer innerhalb des Clusters,
beispielsweise durch die scorecardbasierte Befragung der
Clustermitglieder, eine Wissenslandkarte sowie Maßnahmen
zur interdisziplinären Kooperation.
// Meilensteine
// Ziele
Zielen unserer Hochschule mitwirken: effiziente Strukturen
schaffen sowie Exzellenz in Forschung und Lehre
ausbauen. Konkret für mein Institut: innovative und interdisziplinäre
Themen von der Grundlagenforschung bis zur
Anwendung akquirieren und mit Erfolg durchführen. Dazu
// Voraussetzungen
„verkaufen“. Eine realistische Selbsteinschätzung, weil ich
daran so oft junge Menschen habe scheitern sehen. Eigeninitiative
// Chancen
Wirtschaft – in vielerlei Hinsicht dringend gebraucht. Alternative
Karrierewege eröffnen multiple Chancen in einer
Forschungslandschaft auf höchstem Niveau – wie zum
Beispiel im Exzellenzcluster TMFB der RWTH Aachen
University.
// Tasks
I support the cross-sectional and interdisciplinary
cooperation in the Cluster of Excellence TMFB. These
include measures such as the arrangement of cluster
wide employee colloquia, the implementation of an
annual Performance Measurement as well as activities
in the fields of gender and diversity management, to
which the creation of this brochure belongs.
// Milestones
So far I would say that the most important milestones
and experiences in my scientific career were the possibility
to lead large research projects, my Ph.D. in the
interdisciplinary field of E-Learning and the takeover
of management responsibility for the business unit
knowledge management at ZLW/IMA of RWTH Aachen
University.
// Goals
My next scientific aim is my habilitation in “Agile
processes for learning and knowledge in technology orientated
and knowledge intensive organizations” which I
want to complete at RWTH Aachen University by 2012.
// Requirements
I believe that interdisciplinary scientific research and
working is especially characterized by the joy of combining
contents and methods from different disciplines.
Therefore, you have to be curious about your own field
of research as well as about many different subjects
and to be able and willing to ask questions.
// Chancen
Despite the many critical voices concerning the career
chances of women, I believe that the future prospectives
for female young researchers are good. Of course,
women in technical fields and as executives are still a
minority, but I think that they aren’t considered exotic
anymore and therefore have the same chances as men
if they have the right competence.
// Aufgaben
// Meilensteine
Bisher waren die wichtigsten Meilensteine und Erfahrungen
in meiner wissenschaftlichen Karriere die Möglichkeit
zur Leitung großer Forschungsprojekte, meine Promotion
im interdisziplinären Themenbereich E-Learning und
die Übernahme von Leitungsverantwortung für den
Geschäftsbereich Wissensmanagement am ZLW/IMA der
RWTH Aachen University.
// Ziele
Mein nächstes wissenschaftliches Ziel ist mein Habilitationsvorhaben
zum Thema „Agile Lern- und Wissensprozesse
in wissensintensiven technologieorientierten
Organisationen“ (Arbeitstitel) welches ich bis 2012 an der
RWTH Aachen University zum Ende bringen möchte.
// Voraussetzungen
kennzeichnet. Dafür muss man nicht nur Neugierde auf
die eigene Fachrichtung mitbringen, sondern allgemein
auf viele verschiedene Themen neugierig sein sowie
Fragen stellen können und wollen.
// Chancen
Trotz der vielen kritischen Stimmen hinsichtlich der Karrierechancen
von Frauen, sehe ich die Zukunftsaussichten
für den weiblichen wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchs als
insgesamt gut an. Sicherlich bilden hier weibliche Mitarbeiterinnen
