IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING IONA TELEPHONE LINES
We are currently experiencing some technical difficulties with our telephone lines.
Apologies for any inconvenience this may cause and we thank you for your patience.
Dear Parents
On Tuesday’s assembly,
we celebrated last year’s
academic achievements. It
was wonderful to welcome
back the graduating Year
12s who received an OP
score of five or better, and
acknowledge those of the
student body who achieved
to a high standard in
Semester 2 last year. Both
Kiernan Tait (OP1) and
A l e x M i o t t i ( O P 1 )
addressed the assembly
and provided inspiration as
they encouraged our
students to take every
opportunity in striving to be
the best.
Mrs Johnston, Elliott Lewis (OP1), Alex Miotti (OP1), Brendon Le (OP1),
Kiernan Tait (OP1) and Mr King cut the celebration cake after assembly.
On assembly we also recognised the College’s 1 st XI cricket players and 1 st VI volleyballers, and
congratulated this term’s sporting captains; Bailey Lavender is the 1 st XI captain and Teal Dovey and
Tim Albion are 1 st VI co-captains. Although the teams are yet to be selected, Lachlan Carter was
named as our swimming captain and Trevor Koreman our sailing captain. We wish all four captains
and their respective teams, success for the season ahead.
As we hit the sporting fields this week I encourage you to attend your sons’ games. Whether he is just
starting his journey in Year 5 or an experienced campaigner in Year 12, the boys both appreciate and
need the support of their loving parents.
The College Parents and Friends had their first meeting of the year this week. It is a great forum to not
only meet fellow parents but also discover a little more, of how Iona works. This year, at each meeting,
a College Leadership Team (CLT) member will attend to share insights and challenges and listen to
feedback regarding their respective area of responsibility. At next month’s meeting, Mrs Johnston and
Mr Christie will attend to discuss possible changes to the College’s academic reporting system. This
meeting on 2 March will provide you with the opportunity to have some input into this area and its
future direction. I encourage you to attend, listen and share your wisdom.
Last week I began elaborating on the values on which Iona College is based, the first of which is the
centrality of the Eucharist in our lives. The second of these values is passion and zeal. Passion and
zeal were insisted on by St Eugene de Mazenod for all those who worked with him. They were to
“leave nothing undared” and burn with the same zeal for souls that was the driving force of his own life.
St Eugene, like St Paul, abhorred timidity in his Oblates, “I have no use for smouldering wicks in this
Society; I want you to burn, to give heat, to give light” (St Eugene to Oblate novices).
Year 2:
“A New Spirit:
‘Lifelong Formation”
Iona College is an Oblate school and as such is not just a place for the acquisition of knowledge,
understanding and skills. It is a place that recognises the whole human person, particularly the
spiritual person. For this reason it takes on an extra dimension in helping young people gain an
understanding of themselves and their relationship with God, the world and others. The Iona College
staff are charged with the same demand that St Eugene made upon his fellow Oblates, that is, work
with passion and zeal. It is a tall order for our staff, all of whom have families and busy lives outside of
their commitments to Iona. Thankfully, our teachers share St Eugene’s guiding priority. I am grateful
that they willingly accept the responsibility and pressure that comes with being a passionate, caring
and innovative teaching community.
STAFFING
FOCUS ON QUALITY OUTCOMES
Research shows that schools and teachers have a significant impact on
students and their learning (Hattie 2003). Improving teacher
effectiveness outweighs the impact of any other school education
program or policy in improving student performance. For our students’
sakes, it is important that our teachers have opportunities to engage in
professional learning that leads to high teaching standards and
improves student learning outcomes.
With these beliefs in mind, this year Iona has implemented a new
structure for teacher professional development, one which emphasises
improving teacher quality, the development of highly effective teaching
practices and the creation of a collaborative culture that promotes
learning and growth for all students. By meeting fortnightly in small
groups called professional growth teams (PGTs), teachers are provided
with the framework to observe each other and provide constructive and
meaningful dialogue around performance. Through our PGT program,
our teachers are identifying growth areas, developing the quality of
instruction and enhancing their already positive impact on our students
and their educational outcomes.
Mrs Deanne Johnston
Dean of Staff
FAITH AND MISSION
CHARITABLE FUNDRAISING
The concept of ‘mission’ is central to the Oblate spirituality. Each school
term, Iona focuses on a specific mission activity in terms of our
educational focus, our prayer and our fundraising.
Term 1 focuses on the important work of Caritas, where we support
Project Compassion. In Term 2 we support the good work of Rosies.
Term 3 focuses on the Oblate Missions, and in Term 4 we mainly
support the good work of the St Vincent de Paul Society through
Christmas donations. A significant amount of funds and goods were
raised last year to support these worthy causes. Additional to this,
fundraising occurs on various smaller levels for several other worthwhile
related causes. For example, the amount raised for the MAMI
Christmas Card Appeal for Term 4 last year was $4,653.60.
We commend the Iona community for its sense of mission and overall
generosity towards the needy.
THE HOLY FATHER’S RESOLUTIONS
The Holy Father continues to inspire the faithful ‘in the spirit of St
Francis’: accepting minority groups, embracing the poor, showing
humanness, celebrating with the world’s youth, and drawing people to
God.
Described by Forbes
Magazine as one of
the four most influential
people in the world,
Pope Francis’ role is
broad and complex
and is not without its
challenges. In all of
this, his faith in God,
his love for humanity
and his sense of hope
are inspiring to all.
He is a good man
doing God’s work in
our contemporary
world.
ACADEMIC ASSEMBLY
Tuesday’s Assembly was a case for real celebration as the College
welcomed back our 2014 OP1 – 5 recipients for an academic assembly
and morning tea. In addition to welcoming back these young men, the
staff and student body congratulated four hundred and sixteen students
on their Semester achievements. A list of these students is published
on the following page.
Kiernan Tait and Alex Miotti, two of our OP 1 students, addressed the
students and emphasised a couple of important points. The first of these
points was that being involved in a range of activities across the School
could only be beneficial to an individual’s development. Participating in
co-curricular activities, serving the wider community and being men of
faith were all mentioned as being important in one’s academic success.
The second point made was that having clearly considered goals were
crucial in having direction. Both Kiernan and Alex urged the Year 12s of
2015 to set clear goals in order to achieve to their potential.
The college community is not only proud of the success achieved so far
by the 2015 cohort but we are also excited by what lies ahead for them.
Following is a list of our OP1 – 5 graduates and their post-school
YEAR 12 ACADEMIC INTERVIEWS
In amongst the busyness of the two weeks of school, all Year 12s will
have an academic interview with Ms Helen Murdoch, Ms Melissa
Peacock, Mrs Johnston or me. It has been a great opportunity to
discuss the students’ results so far, the academic goal they want to
achieve this year, steps they will need to take to attain this goal and
even where they want to be at this time next year.
ACADEMIC MORNING TEA
The first of two academic morning teas was held on Tuesday morning in
IPAC with Year 10 and 12 academic award winners attending in the
company of the OP 1 – 5 students of 2014 and their families. Next
Tuesday, all Year 6, 7, 8, 9 and 11 academic award winners will attend
the second morning tea.
earned. I urge all of our students to find ways to achieve to their
potential by commencing the year with a real positivity about their
studies.
Mr John Christie
MUSIC DEPARTMENT
Our ensemble rehearsals commenced this week and our choirs
welcomed back our singing students.
Iona Boys Choir: meet every Thursday morning at 7.30am in
Long Block 1 (Music Classroom). All year 5 and 6 students are
welcome to come along, meet some friends and have some fun.
Ionian Voices: meet every Thursday morning at 7.30am in
Rehearsal Room 2. This is our non auditioned year 7-12 choir who
enjoy singing along with the big boys. All are warmly welcomed.
Ionian Singers: meet every Thursday morning at 7.30am
in Rehearsal Room 1. ‘Singers’ is our only auditioned choir group
and we welcome all boys who would like to audition for this choir.
We also welcomed our year 5 students down to IPAC this week for
‘Demo Day’. Our music team demonstrated a variety of instruments
and discussed their options. The boys have all taken a preference
form home to discuss their choices with families. We look forward to
receiving them back by Monday 2 February. We will then send further
information home as soon as possible. We look forward to an exciting
year of music with our year 5s.
As educators we are aware of the statistics, but I was reminded last
weekend when I read the following in the weekend paper that music is
really great for the personal development of young brains;
‘Researchers at the University of Vermont College of Medicine
analysed the brain scans of more than two hundred kids and found
that musical training thickens (this is, improves) the part of the brain’s
cortex that helps focus their attention, improve their memory, control
their emotions and diminish their anxiety’. I am not surprised that a
large number of our academic achievers at Iona are also music
students.
IONA COLLEGE YEARS 7—12 SPORTS INFORMATION
IONA SPORT 2015
LAST WEEK
Over seven hundred and sixty boys played Iona sport last weekend and
many thanks to coordinators, staff, the sports supporters, coaches/
managers, parents and players. Approximately sixty-five coaches/managers
helped get our teams organised for the opening weekend of sport. It is a
large program and unfortunately, some players may have missed selection
and some teams may not have had games—we are at times limited by field/
court space as well as finding adequate opposition. Some opposing
Colleges do not have the same number of teams as Iona and other large
AIC Colleges, thus causing us to search for supplementary games. It is not
an easy process.
THIS WEEK
The official AIC season begins this weekend with the majority of fixtures
against St Patrick’s College, Shorncliffe. Inter house swim meets begin and
our swim team ventures to St Peters, Indooroopilly for an eight college
carnival. If a player is unavailable for a game for any reason, he must
contact his coach or coordinator—never just not turn up.
VOLLEYBALL
Padua proved too strong for our youthful 1st VI. Our open teams will need to
work harder to maintain our high standards of volleyball. The performance
of our younger teams was typical of our youthful determination.
RESULTS
1st VI : lost 11A : won 10A : won 9A : won 8A : won 7A : won
2nd VI : lost 11B : lost 10B : lost 9B : won 8B : won 7B : won
3rd VI : lost 11C : won 10C : won 9C : won 8C : won 7C : won
9D : won 8D : won 7D : won
Coordinator: Mr Greg Denman (PE/Sports Office).
CRICKET
The trial against Padua proved vital for our 2015 organisation. The 1st XI
exhibited determination to win a tight match.
RESULTS
1st XI : won 10A : lost 9A : won 8A : lost 7A : lost
2nd XI : lost 10B : lost 9B : lost 8B : won 7B : lost
3rd XI : lost 10C : lost 9C : won 8C : won 7C : lost
4th XI : lost 9D : won 8D : lost 7D : lost
Coordinator: Mr Sean Pearce (PE/Sport office).
SWIMMING
The annual trial with MBC girls was again popular. Our Year 5 and 6 team
recorded excellent times and will be a force to be reckoned with in 2015. All
training details are available from Coach Brian Glass at the pool each
afternoon.
Friday 6 February buses depart straight after school to St Peters Lutheran
College via Lohe St, Indooroopilly. Yr 5-6 in SPLC 25m pool and Yr 7-12 in
50m pool. Warm up 4.15pm and 4.45pm start. Meets conclude 7.00pm with
buses returning at approximately 7.45pm.
Coordinator: Mr Keith Harron (3893 8851).
YEAR LEVEL SPORT: CRICKET CLINICS
Please be aware that all members of the A, B, C and Black cricket
teams in each year level will participate in six 1.5hr cricket clinic
sessions (8 hours in total) during their allocated year level sport days.
Our aim is to provide quality coaching sessions using several outside
coaches as well as one Iona staff member to improve the skills and
techniques of our cricketers with the bonus of having favourable
student/coaching staff ratios. Hopefully this will aid the development of
Iona’s cricket program into the future. Note also that a $30 fee will be
charged to your son’s Term 2 Fees account to cover the cost involved.
A letter containing further details was sent home with your son earlier
this week.
CRICKET MANAGERS / COACHES
Thank you to all who have offered to manage and/or coach an AIC
cricket team. Many parents have been contacted in order to fill the
required positions. Without these volunteers we would simply not be
able to cope with the large number of students who have registered to
compete in this year’s AIC competition. These parents deserve our
thanks and the support of the whole team (including other parents)
throughout the season.
INTERHOUSE SWIM CARNIVAL
The Year 5 and 6 Interhouse Swim Carnival will be held next
Wednesday, 11 February. All boys have been trialled in each of the four
strokes and will be involved in a number of events on the day based on
their ability. Boys may wear their full PE uniform (house shirts not
College polo) to and from school on the day. As usual the boys must
wear their College black broad brimmed hats and supply their own
water bottles and sunscreen on the day. At Iona our staff are not
responsible for applying your sons sunscreen, however, they will be
reminded to do it themselves every hour.
It is not possible to give a full program of exact times for each event,
however, the carnival will commence at 11.00am and finish at
approximately 2.45pm. Boys may bring their own food or you may
allow your son to purchase snacks and drinks from the canteen which
will be open at the pool. Although limited space is available parents are
most welcome to attend (BYO chair), we hope to see you there.
2015 AIC SWIMMING SQUAD
The year has only just begun and already the AIC Swimming Squad is
training hard. It is wonderful to see a large number of our Year 5 boys
attending the various training sessions. Despite the fact that only a
limited number will be selected to represent Iona at the AIC Swimming
Championships held at Chandler on Thursday 5 March, we encourage
the boys to train hard and attend the weekly Friday afternoon meets.
* Tuesday Morning Breakfast
We will supply a breakfast for all of our AIC swimmers after Tuesday
morning training. It will include: toast, cereal, yogurt, fruit and juice.
Thank you to Mrs Otway for her organisation.
SWIMMING TOGS POLICY—AIC SWIMMERS
All AIC squad members are asked to wear the Iona speedo styled togs
with the Iona print (the preferred option) or a pair of the plain black
swim skins. No other togs are acceptable. Boys travelling to the weekly
meets must also wear their College polo shirt and black Iona sports
shorts.
AIC SWIM MEET AT ST PETERS COLLEGE
The Iona swim squad will travel to St Peters College this Friday 6
February to compete in the first AIC swim meet for 2015. A bus will
depart the College at 3.10pm and return at approximately 7.45pm.
Parents are most welcome to attend the meet. If your son is unable to
attend please notify the swim managers ASAP. A note was distributed
to all squad members earlier in the week with all necessary details.
LYTTON DISTRICT SWIM TRIALS
Lytton Swim Trials will be held at Moreton Bay College on Friday 13
February (9.30am—2.45pm). Schools are restricted to the number of
competitors that we can send and there are qualifying times which must
be met before a swimmer can be considered. Mr Teece, in consultation
with our College Swim Coach, has nominated a number of boys to
represent the College. A note will be distributed to all swimmers which
will contain your son’s nominated events and other important details.
CHESS
Years 5 and 6 Chess trials will be held from 3.15pm to 4.00pm in
McCarthy 4 on Tuesday 24 February and Wednesday 25 February –
students must attend both sessions.
