This year we have developed a particularly large number of new products and innovations for you,
both for the aquarium and for garden ponds. In the aquarium sector I join you in looking forward to
using our wide selection of food and care products for nano aquariums. For garden ponds we are
now able to offer a guaranteed concept for successfully stabilising the water and combating algae,
after many years of research and experimenting.
Many thanks to everyone who has supported us over the past 50 years, whether as a buyer of our

JBL – from a 30 m 2 pet shop to a worldwide
aquarium product specialist
It all began in Ludwigshafen in 1960 with a small pet shop, just 30 m² in size, which Joachim Böhme, a trained
chemist from Dresden, opened and so made his hobby his job. His love of animals, his white lab coat as his working
clothes, and his friendly manner as well as his specialist knowledge all contributed to his success. His business grew
and the pet shop evolved into a wholesale ornamental
fish business. As fish diseases became a problem, Joachim
Böhme put his studies to good use and developed a highly effective
remedy against ectoparasites, which he named Punktol.
Up to the present day, JBL, under the leadership of Roland
Böhme, the son of the
founder, has expanded
its range to over 1000
products for the aquarium,
terrarium and garden
pond and has established
a position as a leading
producer in this field,
exporting to 65 countries
around the world.
Using the latest production and filling plant, all JBL products are manufactured and dispatched in Neuhofen. The company
site covers over 12,000 m² and includes not only the Production plant and the 6,500 m² Logistics Center completed in
2008, but also the Research Center. Here many fully stocked
aquariums and terrariums operate on a permanent basis
in order to test all the products under realistic conditions.
In order to take the in-house tests to an even
more stringent
level, JBL cooperates
with leading
scientific institutions
throughout Europe, such as the Leibnitz Institute
for Marine Science in Kiel (IFM-Geomar), the Department of Measurement and
Laser Technology at the University of Ulm and the Haus des Meeres in Vienna. In addition
to the usual experiments and tests in the laboratory, JBL biologists have for many years
now gained their insight into the habitats and life of the animals directly from nature in the course of JBL
research expeditions and workshops.
The protection of wildlife and environmental awareness are key factors for JBL. By means of a photovoltaic system installed
on the roofs of the company buildings, JBL is able to generate sufficient electricity itself to meet the entire requirements
of production. For many years JBL has been a supporter of the SHARK PROJECT,
the largest international protection organization for sharks, as sharks are threatened with
imminent extinction at the hands of man.
Aquarium enthusiasts know that they can depend
on the quality of JBL products and appreciate the
new innovations which
JBL regularly launches on the market. Dr.
Rainer Keppler, Director of Development at JBL

with a large proportion of fish scraps containing a high
level of phosphates from fish bone, JBL uses pure fish protein
without scraps and cheap fishmeal. Only then is a carefully
measured amount of fish bone meal added to the protein as
a source of minerals to keep the phosphate levels low and
precisely balanced.
Protects fish stocks: Not one single fish has to be caught to
produce JBL fish food! We use only the parts of the fish which
are left over in the production of fish fillets, according to the motto: the big
fillet for the humans and the little fillet for our aquarium fish! This avoids
high-phosphate fishmeal whilst at the same time using high quality pure
fish protein. Incidentally, the fish processing takes place in the South of
France. JBL objects to processing whole fish from fish stocks which are
under threat.
Wide variety of ingredients: Whoever has 54 different frozen or live
types of food in their fridge? JBL NovoBel staple food, for example, contains
7 flakes with a total of 54 different natural raw ingredients. Fish are
familiar with this variety in the wild and should not receive any less in the
aquarium!
Modern and gentle production: JBL has invested millions in the latest
production facilities so that the flakes, granulates, tablets and sticks do not
lose any of their valuable ingredients during the production processes! On
the 15,000 kg flake drum the flakes are collected and sealed in air-tight containers
immediately after production. This guarantees that the vitamins stay
where they are needed.

which closes our food cans? Then you will know that it is practically impossible!
Here too, JBL invests in top materials so that the high food quality in closed cans is

Dear Mr. Blessin,
In order to carry out experimental tests into global warming, a complex light control unit illuminating
containers of sea water with artifi cial light has been installed at the Leibniz Institute
of Marine Sciences. In tests carried out on several illuminants from various manufacturers using
a multispectral sensor ( LICOR LC-1800; wavelength range 300-850nm) we found that these did
not provide a constant light spectrum. Sunlight, however, has a constant light spectrum.

Nature has adapted to this extensive spectrum.
The JBL T5 “Natur“ and “Tropic“ luminants show a light range which is similar to that
of sunlight.
As we wish to use models to simulate the future warming of the climate and examine the
eff ect on the living communities in the sea, these lights from JBL are highly suitable to simulate
natural daylight.

The cause of floating algae is an excess of nutrients in combination with light.
Direct sunlight combined with increased nitrate and phosphate levels leads to
green water, whether in an aquarium or a garden pond.
On the other hand, white cloudiness is caused by increased bacteria. This
can often be observed in newly-established aquariums and ponds.
UV-C light has been proved to kill germs. The UV-C light is highly effective against the
germs which cause disease as these are almost exclusively found in the open water. The low
number of germs in the water reduces the infection risk for the fish, which are therefore less

Surface skimmer for aquarium fi lters
• Automatically cleans the surface of the water, increasing
the oxygen content in freshwater and saltwater.

(adjustment spindle easily accessible from above).
• Can be adapted to fit aquariums of over 35 cm high.
• Unobtrusive design allows the surface skimmer to
“disappear” in the aquarium.

Surface skimmer JBL TopClean
A REALLY USEFUL ACCESSORY FOR ANY EXTERNAL FILTER is a surface
skimmer (JBL TopClean), which keeps the water surface clean
and guarantees maximum oxygen enrichment of the water via
the water surface.
Normally the external filter draws the “dirty water” off through
the suction hose, with the suction basket positioned just above
the ground-covering material. However, this means that the
surface water is not included in the filter circulation. Often this
results in floating plant residue and the formation of a layer of
“scum”. This scum is a whitish “skin”, comprised of bacteria
and fungi, which floats on the surface of the water and prevents
the exchange of gases at the surface of the water.
With JBL TopClean you can now suction off surface water as
well as water from deeper levels. By means of the regulating
pin, which is easily accessible from above, the proportion of
surface water suction to deep water suction can be freely selected
and infinitely adjusted.
A FURTHER ADVANTAGE IS THE FLOATING UPPER SECTION, which
adapts to any variation in the level of the water (e.g. due to
evaporation).

position of the red inner part, the more water is suctioned off

Oxygen test
• Recommended oxygen content: 8 mg/ at 25° C.
• Test providing accurate readings of oxygen levels from
