Our city, Toronto, is blessed with an
Hastings
When someone asks about Fife
part of our mandate is tangible,
It’s been an important and challenging
year for Hastings. Over the past
12 months we’ve changed the very
easy to explain; it’s more difficult to
Volunteer program
Every year is a busy year for volunteers
at Fife House, and 2001 was
no exception. Over 220 people
volunteered last year in our core programs
and services, and nearly 350 people
volunteered at events, at community
awareness initiatives, and for the Red
Ribbon Campaign.
Last year Fife House volunteers contributed
over 22,000 hours toward the
agency’s services, programs, administration,
development and governance. That’s the
equivalent of 12 full-time staff positions,
which would cost us an extra $340,000.
Of course, it’s difficult to put the contributions
that volunteers make into simple
dollar values; the emotional commitment
that our volunteers bring is priceless.
Two important projects in 2000 were
the Fife House Quilt and the Fife House
Scrapbook.
A group of volunteers organized by
eXavier Peterson produced our second
signature quilt, representing nearly 40
Fife House clients who passed away over
the last two years. This year the quilt will
join many others in the Names Project of
Canada, on display around the country.
Another volunteer, Jana Salcevica,
completed the third Fife House Scrapbook,
commemorating the history and people of
Fife House with photos and mementos.
The Volunteer Program is proud to be a
part of that history.
FINANCIAL STATEMENTS
To the Board of Directors of
Fife House Foundation Inc.
We have audited the statement of
financial position of Fife House
Foundation Inc. as at March 31,
2001 and the statements of operations,
changes in net assets and cash flows for
the year then ended. These financial
statements are the responsibility of the
Organization’s management. Our responsibility
is to express an opinion on these
financial statements based on our audit.
Except as explained in the following
paragraph, we conducted our audit in
accordance with Canadian generally
accepted auditing standards. Those standards
require that we plan and perform
an audit to obtain reasonable assurance
whether the financial statements are
free of material misstatement. An audit
includes examining, on a test basis,
evidence supporting the amounts and
disclosures in the financial statements.
An audit also includes assessing the
accounting principles used and significant
estimates made by management, as well
as evaluating the overall financial statement
presentation.
In common with many charitable
organizations, the Organization derives
revenue from development, the completeness
of which is not susceptible of
satisfactory audit verification. Accordingly,
our verification of such revenue was
limited to the amounts recorded in the
records of the Organization and we were
not able to determine whether any adjustments
might be necessary to development,
excess of revenue over expenses, assets
and net assets.
In our opinion, except for the effect of
adjustments, if any, which we might have
determined to be necessary had we been
able to satisfy ourselves concerning the
completeness of the donations referred to
in the preceding paragraph, these financial
statements present fairly, in all
material respects, the financial position
of the Organization as at March 31, 2001
and the results of its operations and its
cash flows for the year then ended in
accordance with Canadian generally
accepted accounting principles. As
required by the Ontario Corporations Act,
we report that, in our opinion, these
principles have been applied on a basis
consistent with that of the preceding year.
past + future
= change & growth
Our Future
Fife House provides 90% of the supportive
housing and support services
to PHAs in Toronto. Over the past
year, we provided support services to 123
residents/clients through the residences,
and to an additional 57 clients through
our homeless outreach program.
However, even with these impressive
statistics, it was clear that there were
many other people in this city that we
were not reaching with our programs and
services. So, in addition to maintaining
the excellence of our offerings to our
current clients, it was obvious we needed
to tackle two other issues in our
2000/2001 fiscal year: homelessness
amongst PHAs; and making our services
accessible, or creating new ones, for the
underserved and growing segments of the
PHA population – specifically, women and
aboriginal people.
We envisioned a three-fold strategy to
address the needs of homeless PHAs. Our
first step was to transform our Hastings
program into a transitional housing program
with a maximum stay of nine months. We
focused on homeless PHAs in a critical
state of health, and who require a great
deal of assistance in putting together a
support network.
Our next step was to secure funding
through the City of Toronto – Homeless
Initiatives Fund for an outreach worker
who would work solely with homeless
PHAs, or those at risk of being homeless.
Finally, we secured another grant
through the City of Toronto – Homeless
Initiatives Fund to begin a feasibility study
on creating a facility for homeless PHAs
who require a different transition process
from homelessness to being housed.
The other issue we continue to address
is increasing our accessibility to women
and aboriginal people. As early as
November 1996, Fife House put the first
piece if our strategy in place when we
opened our housing program for women
living with HIV/AIDS – the Gladstone
program. Our focus over this past year has
been to continue our outreach to other
AIDS Service Organizations and agencies
that provide services and programming to
women, and to continue being a regular
participant in the Women’s Outreach
Network.
We’ve also begun discussions with
agencies and projects that provide services
and programs to aboriginal people, in
hopes of creating specific programming,
services and partnerships that will be
geared to aboriginal people living with
HIV/AIDS.
Although a great deal of work was
accomplished this past year, there continues
to be a great deal yet to be done.
We hope that by addressing the issues of
homelessness and HIV/AIDS, and the
issue of accessibility to our programs and
services for women and aboriginal people
living with HIV/AIDS, that Fife House will
be closer to providing a spectrum of
program and service options that will be
able to meet the needs of all PHAs.
Philosophy of Care
To enable and assist Fife House
residents/clients to enhance
their quality of life and promote
independence by using an
approach that builds on a person’s
strengths and abilities.
• that in order to meet the
unique needs of residents/
clients, services must be
provided in a flexible manner;
• that we must work in
partnership with residents/
clients, their natural supports
and the community at large;
• that all relationships with
the agency must be based on
mutual respect, striving to
foster trust, goodwill and
warmth;
• that hope is essential.
Fife House produces two publications
each year: Focus on Fife, a promotional
newsletter in January, and the Annual
Report in June. Submissions to Focus on
Fife are welcome and must be submitted
by December 1st. Submissions will be
edited for content and size. The views
expressed are those of the contributors
and not necessarily those of Fife House.
