CACHE LAKE

An 18 member drum group, CACHE LAKE is 

from the northern section of the Saddle Lake First 

Nations Reserve. CACHE LAKE formed in 1993 

with four dedicated singers! Although a young 

group at the time of this recording (1996), they will 

surely be “Keeping The Tradtion” with the guidance 

and teaching of Leo, Lyman and Hector 

McGilvery. The CACHE LAKE SINGERS are

KAI-SPAI SINGERS 

The Blood Reserve covers 540 square miles and is 

located in the southern portion of the province of 

Alberta. The Blood Indians are a part of the nation 

called Blackfeet or Blackfoot. The Blood call 

themselves Nitsitapi, the Real People, or Ahkainah, 

or Kainah meaning “Many Chiefs”. The people, 

feeling a need for a learning, teaching, and 

participating society to preserve their culture, 

organized the Kai-Spai Society in 1970. The 

Kai- Spai Society sponsors many social gatherings 

that are conducive to teaching and learning the 

culture of the Nitsitapi. Pow wows are their most 

popular activity today. Pow wow dance is highly 

individualistic although there are common steps 

and common body movements. Singers compose 

hundreds of pow wow songs every year and 

usually, at a pow wow, you will not hear the same 

song twice.

formed in the summer of 1994, and since then have

STICK GAME SONGS 

- VOLUME 1 

The Stick Game is an ancient game within North 

American First Nation’s culture that pre-dates 

contact with other cultures. Through the Stick 

Game, stories and songs could be, and still are 

shared. The Stick Game brought people together; 

people from within a tribe, and also from differing 

tribes. This gathering of the people inevitably 

encouraged the exchange of stories, whether it was 

information about friends and relatives, passing of 

myths, or information about the different tribes, the 

topics for conversation were limitless. The singing 

that accompanies the Stick Game had connotations 

that were mostly of a mythological nature. The 

songs that were used were believed to have 

mythological powers, and if a group sang its songs 

and won the game then it was believed that the 

group had more power than the opposing group. 

Their powerful song was believed to have made 

them succeed. We hope you enjoy these traditional

SWEETGRASS SINGERS 

The SWEETGRASS SINGERS is a Cree singing 

group from the Sweetgrass Band near North 

Battleford, Saskatchewan, Canada. The group was 

formed in 1980 by lead singer Ross Paskimin and 

participates in and hosts the U.S.A. and Canada. 

They also help at schools where they promote the 

Spirit of the Song, and serve as models for our 

young to be drug and alcohol free.
