General information about the national YG network:
The SNSYG was founded in 1998 as a section of the Swiss Nuclear Society.
During the last couple of years, the SNSYG organized numerous interesting seminars which focused
primarily on visiting nuclear related facilities and institutes and on the valuable information provided by
corresponding facility staff. These well attended seminars offered good opportunities for young people to
meet peers.
Hosting the International Youth Nuclear Congress (IYNC) 2008
This IYNC 2008 in Interlaken was an excellent opportunity to meet with young professionals from all over
the world, to share the view of the multi-faceted aspects of the deployment of the nuclear energy, and to
create an opportunity for networking, collaboration, sharing of technical information and the building of
trust relationships internationally.
It was a challenging task to arrange the program, the venue and the financing of this huge conference
project, which attracted in the end more than 320 participants to come for one week to Interlaken in
September 2008.
ETH Students meet Swiss Nuclear Industry
For the first time, the SNSYG organized in cooperation with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology
(ETH) the event “Students meet Swiss Nuclear Industry”.
The main idea of this event is to bring together students with a nuclear background and high
representatives of the Swiss nuclear industry. For this event, the SNSYG offers a very good platform.
More than 40 master degree students met in an evening lecture: After the introduction by the SNSYG
and a professor, three representatives of the nuclear industry held a presentation about jobs and
opportunities in their specific industry sector: The manager of the NPP Muehleberg for the existing NPPs,
Alpiq’s nuclear assets manager for the Swiss utilities and the CEO of Resun for the new build project
companies.
During an apéro after the presentations, the students had the opportunity to get directly into contact
with the industry representatives.
Spring meeting at NPP Beznau
The SNSYG held its spring meeting on March 19 th at the Boettstein convention center near the NPP
Beznau. The German YG was invited to join this event as well.
Under the headline “Presence and future at the Beznau site”, the 30 Swiss and German participants were
informed about the new build project and its challenges.
After the welcome by the power plant manager, the participants could visit the NPP Beznau. An exercise
at the control room simulator was a highlight: Under the guidance of operational staff, the group had the
task to run down the plant in accordance with the manual after a scram.
On invitation of the plant manager, the YG finished the day with a dinner at Schloss Boettstein.
Autumn meeting at EPFL in Lausanne
On 12 October 2010, the annual Autumn Meeting 2010 was held at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de
Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland. Under the title “Research and education with CROCUS”, the SNSYG visited
the facilities of the research reactor CROCUS. The attendants were introduced by the responsible
scientist in the research program. After receiving the theoretical background in the field of neutron
physics the group operated the reactor and performed successfully a few criticality experiments with this
zero-power research reactor. Finally they were allowed to scram the reactor before shutting down the
facility
Technical tour to Chernobyl
From the 26 th - 29 th of May 2011 18 members of the Swiss Young Generation have visited Kiev, the
exclusion zone, the Chernobyl NPP and the cities of Prypjat and Chernobyl. The visit was organized in
collaboration with the Ukrainian YG.
After the arrival and first impressions of Kiev, the visit in the exclusion zone, the Chernobyl NPP, the
ghost city of Prypjat and the village of Chernobyl has given the visiting group a tremendous impression
about the event which happened 25 years and 1 month ago. Various literature is available on this tragic
accident, but being on-site and explained by local people cannot be replaced by such documentations. The
organizers and some group members have also brought some detectors, with which radiation
measurements have been performed during the visit. Summarized the accumulated dose was 4 times below
the accumulated dose during the flights to Kiev and back to Zurich, which lasted around the same time
(2.5 µSv compared 10 µSv in 6 hours). However, a long term stay in Exclusion zone/Prypjat is still not
feasible.
The next day a tour in Kiev was also organized by the Ukrainian-YG, including the visit in the Chernobylmuseum.
The excursion ended then with a farewell dinner and the next morning, packed with lots of visual
impressions and measured data points, the regression to Zurich took place.
The Swiss Nuclear Society Young Generation Group wants to thank the Ukrainian YG by helping and coorganizing
this visit!
Autumn meeting at NPP Fessenheim
On November 18 th six members of the Swiss Young Generation and five students and workers from the
Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich) visited the nuclear power plant Fessenheim in
France. Subsequent to a short plant introduction by a member of the EDF communications department the
group toured through turbine house and plant simulator. After lunch in a local country guesthouse the
participants visited the EDF “House of Energy”. This information centre shelter amongst other things an
animated overview map of the EDF power plants and a model of a tidal generating plant. The last tour step
was the local hydro-electric power plant Fessenheim at the river Rhine.
Organizational modifications
In the bianual YG board election in November 2011, Matthias Horvath, Thomas Winkler and Paolo Mini did
not run for re-election. The YG assembly elected Carsten Janning and Mathias Trautmann (both working at
the NPP Leibstadt).
