1907: Mizzou became
home to the first public MSW
program west of the Mississippi
River.
A 22% increase in demand for professional
social workers is predicted during 2006-16, which
is much faster than the average for all occupations.

96 professional degrees
were awarded in 2010-11 (42
BSW and 54 MSW).
• The SSW offers the only publicly sponsored PhD
program in Social Work in the state of Missouri.
• The SSW and the Department of Personal Financial
Planning have collaborated to provide a minor in
Financial Literacy for Helping Professionals.
• In fall 2011, ranked School of Social Work faculty
taught 4,212 student credit hours. Ranked faculty
includes all tenure-track and non-regular assistant,
associate and full professors.

Field awards
• Aneisa Sherrill-Mattox, MSW, LCSW, executive director
at Welcome Home, housing for homeless veterans -
MSW Field Instructor of the Year, May 2012.
• Kristi Turner, MSW, LCSW, shelter director at Rainbow
House, emergency shelter for children - BSW Field
Instructor of the Year, December 2011.
• Christina Montgomery, BSW, received the MSW Field
Instructor of the Year award in May 2011.
Development & alumni
• The School of Social Work has 25 endowed scholarships
presently. In 2011-12, there were 29 scholarships
awarded.
• In summer 2011, the Social Work Alumni Association
won 2nd place in the new member recruitment contest
for small schools/colleges with fewer than 4,000 members.
The $250 prize was used for a summer scholarship
for Daniel Stribling.
• Stan Remer, MSW ‘68, was selected the 2012 Faculty
Member of the Year for Valley Forge Christian College –
Woodbridge campus (Va.).
Grants and research
• In fiscal year 2011, the School was awarded $883,462 in
external grant awards; only two other departments in the
College had more grant awards.
• The largest award in 2011 was from the Mo. Dept. of Social
Services; this contract provided more than $300,000
to support part-time course work, leading to the MSW
degree for 38 students.
