Faculty/staff achievements<br />

• Dale Fitch, PhD, <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong> assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor,<br />

received a 2012 Provost’s Outstanding Junior Faculty<br />

Teaching Award.<br />

• Suzanne Cary, director <strong>of</strong> field instruction, was named<br />

Outstanding Faculty Member by the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong><br />

<strong>Work</strong> Alumni Organization for 2012.<br />

• Claudia Jones-Lewis, administrative associate II, and<br />

Elizabeth Miller, grantwriter II, received Distinguished<br />

Staff Awards in HES.<br />

• Mansoo Yu, PhD, MSW, was appointed to the editorial<br />

board <strong>of</strong> the Journal <strong>of</strong> the Society for <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong><br />

and Research (J<strong>SSW</strong>R). The journal is an <strong>of</strong>ficial publication<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Society for <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong> and Research<br />

(<strong>SSW</strong>R).<br />

• Antaniece Sills, BSW/HDFS major, won two NAACP<br />

awards—the Barbara Jordan Student <strong>of</strong> the Year and<br />

the Charles Hamilton Houston Collegiate Achievement<br />

Award.<br />

• Abigail (Abby) Rolbiecki, MSW and PhD student,<br />

was elected into the Rollins Society. Abby also<br />

received a Master’s in Public Health in May 2012.<br />

Program achievements<br />

• In February 2012, the Council <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong> Education<br />

reaffirmed the <strong>School</strong>’s accreditation for eight<br />

years (until 2020).<br />

• MU’s <strong>SSW</strong> is the only social work program in the state<br />

<strong>of</strong> Missouri that is specifically designed for the needs <strong>of</strong><br />

rural students in the entire northern, southeast and south<br />

central regions <strong>of</strong> the state.<br />

• In 2011-2012, the MSW Program had a 22% enroll ment<br />

growth and graduated 101 masters level social workers.<br />

• The MSW Program recently received approval from the<br />

Missouri Department <strong>of</strong> Higher Education to expand<br />

our Off-campus MSW Program to south central Missouri<br />

beginning fall 2012.<br />

• A new graduate certificate in Gerontological <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong><br />

for practicing social workers and current MSW students<br />

has been approved. The certificate focuses on practice<br />

strategies <strong>of</strong> social work intervention from micro, mezzo<br />

and macro perspectives. Coursework began in fall 2011.<br />

• The <strong>School</strong> has also created a new graduate certificate<br />

and scholarship in Military <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong>. This certificate<br />

was created in response to a growing need for trained<br />

social workers to work with veterans, active military<br />

and their families with issues related to deployment and<br />

reintegration.

River.<br />

A 22% increase in demand for pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

social workers is predicted during 2006-16, which<br />

is much faster than the average for all occupations.<br />

(U.S. Dept. <strong>of</strong> Labor, Bureau <strong>of</strong> Labor Statistics).<br />

BSW and 54 MSW).<br />

• The <strong>SSW</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers the only publicly sponsored PhD<br />

program in <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong> in the state <strong>of</strong> Missouri.<br />

• The <strong>SSW</strong> and the Department <strong>of</strong> Personal Financial<br />

Planning have collaborated to provide a minor in<br />

Financial Literacy for Helping Pr<strong>of</strong>essionals.<br />

• In fall 2011, ranked <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong> faculty<br />

taught 4,212 student credit hours. Ranked faculty<br />

includes all tenure-track and non-regular assistant,<br />

associate and full pr<strong>of</strong>essors.<br />

• Aneisa Sherrill-Mattox, MSW, LCSW, executive director<br />

at Welcome Home, housing for homeless veterans -<br />

MSW Field Instructor <strong>of</strong> the Year, May 2012.<br />

• Kristi Turner, MSW, LCSW, shelter director at Rainbow<br />

House, emergency shelter for children - BSW Field<br />

Instructor <strong>of</strong> the Year, December 2011.<br />

• Christina Montgomery, BSW, received the MSW Field<br />

Instructor <strong>of</strong> the Year award in May 2011.<br />

Development & alumni<br />

• The <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong> has 25 endowed scholarships<br />

presently. In 2011-12, there were 29 scholarships<br />

awarded.<br />

• In summer 2011, the <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong> Alumni Association<br />

won 2nd place in the new member recruitment contest<br />

for small schools/colleges with fewer than 4,000 members.<br />

The $250 prize was used for a summer scholarship<br />

for Daniel Stribling.<br />

• Stan Remer, MSW ‘68, was selected the 2012 Faculty<br />

Member <strong>of</strong> the Year for Valley Forge Christian College –<br />

Woodbridge campus (Va.).<br />

Grants and research<br />

• In fiscal year 2011, the <strong>School</strong> was awarded $883,462 in<br />

external grant awards; only two other departments in the<br />

College had more grant awards.<br />

• The largest award in 2011 was from the Mo. Dept. <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong><br />

Services; this contract provided more than $300,000<br />

to support part-time course work, leading to the MSW<br />

degree for 38 students.<br />
