Welcome to Fentongollan’s 

2012 Autumn catalogue. 

Here in the heart of Cornwall we lovingly grow, carefully lift and hand 

pack, all our own daffodils, miniatures and narcissi, including many 

exclusive varieties bred here in Cornwall. We also stock a comprehensive 

range of tulips, hyacinths, crocus and many other bulbs (plus some 

wallflowers, sweet Williams and garlic too!) all are of the highest 

standard and specially selected by us, from the best growers. 

To assist you with your garden planning and to ensure you have 

colour when you want, we have included our NEW 12 month 

bulb planner (page 42). This shows you all the varieties we supply 

(in our autumn and spring catalogues combined) and when you can 

expect them to flower, making sure your garden is never without 

colour, ever again. Many customers have expressed how helpful the 

flowering times information we provide is, so we hope this calendar 

will be a really useful addition to your potting shed! 

And finally, although we don’t like to mention Christmas so early, we 

know it’s not far around the corner and never too soon for you 

organised early birds! 

Our Christmas gifts and hampers were such a HUGE success last year, 

we just wanted to remind you that we will be offering specially selected 

Cornish produce from our friends and neighbours once again. Look out

Top tips on getting 

the best results 

from your bulbs. 

All our daffodils are best planted 

in well drained soils and will also 

flower in window boxes or indoor 

containers when given plenty of 

light. Bulbs will be dispatched from 

mid September onwards and arrive 

with full planting instructions. 

If you have a small garden or budget 

you can make a big impact with a 

couple of multi layered pots that 

will flower for many weeks and 

with a bit of aftercare will come 

back next year too. 

Protect your bulbs 

over the winter. 

After many years of relatively mild 

winters, we have all got rather 

complacent about protecting potted 

bulbs from severe frosts. Please 

remember they cannot survive 

being frozen through, so move 

them somewhere safe, or cover 

them up with suitable insulating 

material if we are due a cold winter.

INDOOR BULBS 

FOR CHRISTMAS 

Hyacinths 

Plant prepared hyacinths as early as possible in September. 

Put in bowls of multi-purpose compost with the tips of the 

bulbs above the compost. Water, allow to drain and then place 

in a cool dark place. A mouse free shed or garage would be 

fine. Do not allow to dry out but keep just moist, not too wet. 

Leave for about 6-8 weeks or until the shoots are showing 

and you can see white roots at the bottom of the pot. The 

leaves may be yellow at this point, but bring them into a cool 

light place and wait a week or so until the stems grow and 

the buds develop then bring into room temperature, a sunny 

windowsill is good. When flowering has finished the bulbs 

can be planted in the garden and will flower in subsequent 

years. You can also grow hyacinths in water in special hyacinth 

glasses or in a bowl of pebbles or glass pebbles. To do this put 

a layer of pebbles in a bowl and place the bulbs just in the 

pebbles. Fill with water to the base of the bulbs. 

Paperwhites 

These should be planted mid-late November for Christmas 

blooms. They are available from September so purchase and 

store in a cool frost free place. They will start to shoot but 

this is ok, they will still flower if planted later. Four to five in a 

pot looks good. They can also be grown in pebbles or glass 

pebbles and water. Plant with the water just touching the 

base of the bulb. 

Amaryllis (Hippeastrum) 

These will flower about 10-12 weeks after planting, so for 

Christmas blooms plant in October. Leave the top third of the 

bulb above the compost. Water sparingly until growth begins, 

then water freely. Rotate the pot to keep the stem upright and 

you may need to give the taller varieties some support as the 

flower heads are heavy. 

Miscellaneous Bulbs. 

Many other bulbs, such as Crocus, Iris Pauline, Puschkinias 

and Scillas can be grown indoors. They should also be planted 

in September and put in a cool dark place, then brought 

into the light. Most of the varieties will also grow in water 

and pebbles. Put some pebbles, shells, coloured stones or 

glass pebbles in a glass container, and place the bulbs in the 

pebbles. Add water to just touch the bottom of the bulbs. 

These bulbs should be discarded after flowering.
