Composite entries
A composite is a sampling of two or more
representative segments or elements that conveys
to a judging panel the scope, breadth or range
of an entry. In Craft Achievement categories,
entrants may submit more than one entry per
craft discipline; or a composite containing two
or more unedited samples of their work. Multiple
composites within a category are not allowed.
To differentiate between pieces, lay one to two
seconds of black before the next piece begins. No
additional effects or music are allowed. Demo reels
or montages are not allowed. Shot sheet required,
listing each segment of your composite in the
order in which it appears on your entry. Composite
entries must adhere to all guidelines; the “1-2
seconds of black” rule (with no audio or slates) will
be enforced to prohibit post-production.
What’s the “1-2 seconds of black”
rule
In composite entries, and/or entries that have been
edited to adhere to entry guidelines, you lay down
a full 1-2 seconds of black (with no audio or slates)
prior to the next segment beginning. If there’s
less space between segments, your entry may be
disqualified
What’s double-dipping
Part i: A complete program or segment may be
entered only once in news or program categories.
Any entry that airs as both a multi-part series and
as a full-length program may be entered only once
in the competition in either form, regardless of the
amount of new material added. A multi-episode
program may only be entered in one category, not
separate categories depending on the content of
each episode. Producers cannot enter the same
material as both program and segment producers,
or in both news and program categories.
Part ii: Craft persons, like writers, photographers,
editors, etc., are allowed to enter in programming
categories if they directly contributed to the
content of the program or segment, and have
the permission of the primary producer. If a craft
person does enter in a programming category, they
are prohibited from entering the same piece again
in their respective craft category.
The only exception to this rule is when a craft
person performs multiple jobs on an entry. For
example, if the entrant served as photographer
and writer on the production, they are eligible to
enter the piece in both photography and writing
crafts categories. Under this example, they could
be recognized twice, as photographer and writer,
since those are deemed separate job functions.
What if material aired on-line
You may enter material that only has been
“broadcast” online, but, as with traditional
broadcast entries, these programs, stories or
segment must be produced and targeted for a
regional audience. If your story or segment airs
strictly online as a stand-alone production, it must
be entered in a program category, regardless of its
length.
Feature/segment categories are for pre-produced
segments that are a part of a larger production.
You can also enter online segments in the
interstitial category (#50) or Short Form Program
(#51). Interstitial includes those segments that
aired on-line only. If you have a segment that is not
a part of a larger program, and it only aired on-line,
you can enter it here.
No post-production
Nope; nada. No added music, animation, narration,
graphics, nothing. Your entry is not supposed to
look like a demo reel. The only category that allows
any post-production is Set Design, and the sky’s
the limit. For everything else, post-production
equals disqualification.
Can I submit the same work in two
places
No. Please refer to the Double-dipping information,
above, for the details.
How many people can be listed per
entry
With the exception of Special Achievement and
Craft Achievement, we allow ten names on an
entry form.
Can we just list the entrant as
“Staff”, “News Team” or “Company X”,
etc.
You may NOT list any entrant name as “Staff,”
“News Team”, “Company X”, etc. EMMY® statuettes
are awarded to individuals, not to their employers,
stations or companies. All entries must include
the name and production credit for at least one
individual.
Again, what are the steps to entering
Step One: Each name to be listed on an entry
needs to be recognized by EMMY® EXPRESS. The
entrant(s) unique email address is how EMMY®
EXPRESS matches names to entries. Each name
on an entry needs to be either a member or a
registered user. This is step one.
Step Two: Complete the on-line “entry forms” –
you must complete an entry form for each entry.
By choosing “add another entry” before you pay
you can have all your entries on one master list and
pay in one lump sum.
Step Three: Upload your video. After you’ve
completed your entry forms, you’ll receive a
confirmation email from EMMY® EXPRESS. This
email will have links to upload your video, to
modify your entry to print your entry form, and to
make payments. Save this email. You may need it
later.
If you have any questions, please email or
call 314-533-2993.
How can I add my name to an entry
already submitted
Please refer to how to modify an entry below.
Do you have to be a member of NATAS
Mid-America to submit an entry
You do not have to be a member to enter, but your
entry fees are discounted if you are. You can join at
the time of entry. Fill out a membership application
and submit a SEPARATE payment for your dues.
To get the member rate for an entrant, the email
address associated with their membership must be
provided to allow verification of active membership
status. If the email address is not found, the nonmember
rate will be charged. If a non-member
rate is charged for someone who is an active
member or who will now immediately renew
their membership, select pay later type option.
The emailed copy of the entry will contain a link
allowing the entry to be updated with the verified
membership status so the entry price can be
updated before payment.
When in doubt, please confirm your membership
before submitting a new application. To Confirm
Memberships - follow the Member Login link on
our website.
If you duplicate your membership, EMMY® Express
will not be able to recognize your membership.
Your duplicate membership will have to be deleted
from the system. Please contact the office to have
your duplicate membership deleted.
I submitted my entry and now I need
to make changes.
EMMY® Express allows you to modify your entry
after the process has been completed and an email
is received by the original submitter. You’ll find
the link on the bottom of the email receipt titled
EMMY® Express - Email Copy of EMMY® Entry, “Use
this link to modify your entry.” You have the ability
to change information or add entrants to the entry.
NOTE: All memberships must be verified before
proceeding, so please make sure you have all
entrants email addresses.
How do I change a category on a
submitted entry
EMMY® EXPRESS does allow categories to be
changed, but it can only be done through the
administrator. Please email Maggie at Maggie@
emmymid-america.org and include the title of the
entry, the current entry category, the category
number and the proposed new category. Do not
forget to include your contact information.
What forms of payment are accepted
All payments must be received by April 23 rd . Keep
membership and entry payments separate please.
Paypal is our preferred payment method, but you
may also pay with CHECK or PAY LATER WITH
Credit Card. If you select pay later with credit
card or check, you must include your credit card
information or check with the Entry Form
(page 26).
Who is the “Submitter Contact” on the
entry
This is the person who is submitting entries (i.e.
completing the online entry forms) on behalf
of their station or production company. This is
the first person we will contact if we have any
questions or require additional information
regarding the entry. This person may or may not be
listed as an “entrant” as well.
Video Upload – What do I need to
know
VIDEO PREPARATION and Formats
Entrants are responsible for the technical quality of
their videos.
FORMAT: Your video must be one of the following
formats:
flv (flash video)
mp4 (MPEG-4 H.264 encoding)
vp6 (True Motion)
mov (QuickTime PTEG-4 H.264 encoding)
SIZE: The video file size should not be larger than
500MB to make upload times reasonable.
All video files should be sized to 480x320 pixels
or larger but the preferred width is 480 wide.
Videos less than 480 will NOT be up-scaled to 480,
so submit 480 or greater to ensure your video is
comparable with others in the category. Videos
larger than 480 wide will be transcoded to fit by
the player. All video are played back in a 480x320
video player window (or 480x270 if 16:9 ratio) but
can also be viewed full screen during the judging
process.
LENGTH: Do NOT submit more than is allowed
because it will be truncated.
allowed for the category you are entering. For
example, DO NOT submit a 22 minute clip for a
category with maximum length 15 minutes.
Can I promote my regional EMMY®
statuette If I am awarded an EMMY®
statuette, can I promote it and for
how long
EMMY® USAGE DISTINCTION
All publicity, advertising or any written reference
undertaken by nominees and award recipients to
Area EMMY® Awards, must clearly state that the
awarded achievement is for a “Regional EMMY®
Award,” so that the distinction between Chapter
Area Award recipients/nominees and National
Award recipients/nominees is clearly established.
(from page 61 of the Regional Awards Manual,
under “Appropriate Symbols of Excellence”)
EMMY® Trademark & Promotion
There are strict guidelines regulating the display
and promotion of the EMMY® statuette statue. For
details please follow the guidelines set forth by
the National office regarding acceptable ways to
promote/advertise EMMY® awards.
Please keep in mind the EMMY® statuette statue is
a symbol of excellence in broadcasting and not of
being the best.
“Recipients can’t claim to be the ‘best’. The
protocol that should be followed is for each
winner to state that they were an EMMY® winner
in a given category; nowhere in our rules, judging
procedures or ballots is it expressed or implied that
winners are the ‘best’; they are ‘EMMY® recipients’
or “EMMY® winners”. The spirit of the ‘standard
excellence’ should prevail.”
EMMY® AWARD Ownership
EMMY® Awards are presented to individuals, not
to their employers. Individuals and the National
Academy of Television Arts and Sciences retain
ownership of the statuette even if an employer
pays the entry fees. Stations, studios and
production companies may order a duplicate
statuette for display at their place of business
(one each; up to a maximum of three per winning
program entry).
Corporations, production companies, cable
companies and other employers associated with
winning craft entries may purchase plaques from
the National Academy that have a replica of the
statuette and space to list the names and titles of
their employees’ award recipients for display at
their office.
