Prior to her doctoral and post-doctoral studies, Dr. Patricia M. Barbetta served as a teacher, program supervisor, and
education director during her 11 years at a school in Pennsylvania for students with emotional and behavioral disorders.
She became an Assistant Professor at FIU in 1992 and, in 1996, she was awarded a University Excellence in Teaching
Award. In 1997, she was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure, and the following year, she was selected as a
Department Chairperson. She served in that position for four years. In 2007, she was awarded the COE’s Builder’s and
Frost Professor Awards. She has numerous publications in special education journals and has been awarded multiple
federal, state, and local grants (nearly $8.70 million as of Spring 2014). From 2008-2012, she served as the COE
Associate Dean of Graduate Studies. Currently, she is an Associate Professor in special education in the Department of
Teaching and Learning.
