The Mission Statement 

Through competitive swimming, 

empower athletes to achieve their 

personal potential through effective 

coaching and mentoring, following the Y 

core values of caring, honesty, respect 

and responsibility. 


and the goals supporting the Mission Statement… 

• Remain first choice for competitive aquatics in the 

vicinity 

• To promote consistent visible coaching and 

technique instruction at all levels 

• Embed the YMCA values in all aspects of the 

program 

• To ensure alignment of the goals and objectives of 

the swim team program, the Y and STPA 


The role of all families is paramount to the success of 

the competitive program 

• Rely on the support of 100 % of the 

parents whose children swim in the 

program – we need you! 

• Swimming at UMLY is 

a family sport! 

There are many opportunities to get involved! 


The primary fundraising events are 100% volunteerbased 

and include the following… 

• Hosting swim meets 

– YMCA PA East District championships (March) 

– Mini Meet (March) 

– East Fields Long Course Meet (July) 

– Long Distance Meet (November) 

• Market Day 

• Other individual-based opportunities 

– Scrip program 


What are the core expenses of the competitive swim 

team program 

• Program fees 

– Assessed and payable to UMLY 

– Varies based on participation 

• Fall 

• Winter 

• Spring 

• Year round 

• Escrow account 

• Parent’s association 


What expenses are charged against my escrow 

account 

• Meet entry fees (excluding dual meets) 

• Coaches travel (mileage, food, hotel) 

• Apparel (excluding team t-shirt) 

• Invitational meet expenses* 

– Transportation 

– Meals 

– Hotel 

* These expenses are based on the number of swimmers participating and include such 

meets as George Mason, Spring Nationals, Summer Nationals 


What is my parent’s association fee used for 

• Penn Del league registration fees

• Team socials and events 

• Program directory/supplies

Program Philosophy: 

Priorities & Progressions 

• Family & School always trump swimming 

• Where does/should swimming fit on your child’s 

priority list 

• Progress as an athlete will most often reflect where 

swimming is on the priority list. 

• Different kids develop at different rates. 

• We have our groups and progressions set up the 

way they are for a reason….

Dual Meet Changes for 2010-2011 

• Why 4 teams this year rather than 5 

• No buses to meets this season. 

• What to do if you won’t be at a meet. 

– If you know at the start of the season. 

– Opting out on the web site (must be a week 

before the meet) and inside the meet week. 

– Email the coach (for the lineup) and the 

coordinator (for your volunteer job) to let them 

know. 


Who do I need to ask….. 

• If it’s a training question, practice question, you 

probably need to see the practice group coach. 

• If it’s a dual meet question, you probably need to 

ask the dual meet team coach. 

• If it’s a specialized question you might need Anne 

(juniors), Anna (minis), Jamie (seniors), Kathryn 

(admin/office) or Glenn (Nats/PN). 

• If you’re not sure, drop a line or a call to the office 

and we will point you in the right direction. 


Changing Lives 2010-2011 

Annual Support Campaign 

• Your YMCA really is a charity! 

– Annual support as financial aid for people to be 

a part of our YMCA community. 

– Annual support to help us contribute to our 

YMCA mission. 

• Almost $500,000 was given away by our 

association last year. Help us to never have to 

turn someone away.
