Hard Wired and Fancy Free. Why are the arts
necessary A newborn child is emotionally
hard-wired to respond immediately and
intuitively to the beauties and usefulness
of it’s mother’s breast. The various arts and
artistic crafts, from Mozart to Mark Rothko
to violin making, reinforce the value of
such evolved and necessary responses
while helping us get beyond them to
“recognitions,” moments of fresh insight that
reveal where and what we are in new and
useful ways.
