Before becoming Newberry College’s 20th president, Dr. Zais served his country for over 30 years as an officer in the United States Army, attaining
the rank of brigadier general. As an assistant professor at West Point, he taught management consulting, organizational behavior, and leadership.
A paratrooper and Ranger, Dr. Zais served in a wide variety of infantry units, in Vietnam, the United States, and Korea. He commanded two rifle companies,
an infantry battalion, a light infantry brigade, and served as deputy commanding general at Fort Riley, Kan. His experience is in military plans
for presidential hopeful John McCain.
Andy Carter
Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics
Andy Carter is entering his seventh year as the Newberry College Director of Athletics, having joined the Newberry family
in August of 2002. Since taking the helm, Carter has tackled several projects in order to turn Newberry Athletics into one of the
premier programs in Division II.
Carter came to Newberry after a 15-year tenure at Missouri Baptist College. Upon receiving his undergraduate degree
from the NAIA institution, he began his career as an admissions recruiter and assistant baseball coach while working on his
master’s of business administration at Lindenwood University. His degree completion led him to a faculty position as a professor
of business administration and economics at Missouri Baptist, while at the same time serving the school as head baseball coach.
Carter took over as baseball coach in 1991, a position he held for nine seasons. Seven years into a successful coaching
career, highlighted by seven consecutive conference championships, he also took over as Missouri Baptist’s athletic director. He
served in both roles for two years before leaving coaching in order to devote all his attention to administrative duties.
Almost immediately upon his arrival at Newberry, Carter presented the faculty with the “Newberry College Athletic Initiative”,
a long-term plan to secure future athletic success, while maintaining Newberry’s excellent academic record for its athletics
teams.
Since Carter’s arrival, Newberry has undergone an overhaul of its athletic program, instituting a stringent evaluation process for all varsity sports.
The results were almost immediate, as the scarlet and gray have nearly doubled South Atlantic Conference victories in consecutive years under Carter’s
reign. Also, for the first time since 1999, Newberry enhanced its offering of varsity sports, adding wrestling and competitive cheerleading.
Another stage of Carter’s plan is a complete upgrade of Newberry’s facilities in order to showcase the college’s new athletic vision. Ground was
broken in the summer of 2004 on the Newberry College Athletic Complex, which will be the future home to Newberry baseball and other teams. Also,
the Newberry basketball and volleyball teams began playing last season on a new gym floor, powered by a brand new, state-of-the art lighting system.
Future plans include new facilities for the men’s and women’s tennis teams, and determining the best course of action to give the football facilities at
Seltzer Field its first facelift in almost 20 years.
In addition to his duties at Newberry, Carter is an appointee to the NCAA National Division II Baseball Committee, where he serves as chairman for
the South Region. He serves on the Newberry President’s Cabinet, under Dr. Zais. He is also a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors
of Athletics.
Carter is married to his wife of 23 years, Rena. They have seven children: Aaron (20), a senior cadet at USMA-West Point, Becca (19), Beth (16), Jake
(14), Rachel (12), Caleb (10), and Micah (8).

2008 Newberry Men’s Soccer
Season Outlook
The Newberry College men’s soccer team
enters the 2008 season with expectations of having
a successful season and positioning itself for
postseason success. According to head coach Sam
Okpodu, the team will need to finish the season
stronger than they have in the past.
“The South Atlantic Conference is a very
competitive league and we want to able to position
ourselves in the top four teams so that we
will be able to host a first round game,” said Okpodu.
“We definitely have the talent to challenge
for a top four ranking in the SAC tournament, it
just depends upon if our team will play together
throughout the season.”
Newberry’s schedule sets up to be its toughest
yet with matches against traditional powers Limestone,
Lincoln Memorial, Tusculum and Wingate.
Coach Okpodu believes this season will be the
most competitive the SAC has ever been and will
create great matches between Newberry and their
opponents.
The senior offensive trio of Debola Ogunseye
(Lagos, Nigeria), Kwame Gyamfi (Accra, Ghana)
and Shane Abbott (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) will lead
the Newberry attack against their opponents. The
trio returns from last year when they combined for
30 goals and 13 assists. All three players were
named to all-South Atlantic Conference squads
following the 2007 season. If they can build upon
on their previous success, they should end the
2008 season on the same list.
“I need them to play more as a team with more
one- and two-touch play this season. They need to
look to set up goal-scoring opportunities for one
another, but at the same time in certain situations
they need to be selfish when they have opportunities
to score,” Okpodu said of the trio.
The style of play for the team won’t differ
much from previous seasons. Newberry will try
to possess the ball as much as possible and take
full advantage of scoring opportunities by getting
shots on goal and finishing around the goal. Coach
Okpodu added, “If teams are able to stop or slow
down our scoring attack we are going to posses
the ball and be cautious with our attack to prevent
us from being vulnerable on the defensive end.”
The midfield will be led by Abbott and returning
starter Brandon Baker (Conway, S.C.). They
will be the foundation for possessing the ball and
distributing scoring opportunities to Ogunseye
and Gyamfi. The midfield will also be helped by
the addition of several talented incoming players
that will push for starts and playing time.
“Shane has a serious role to play in the midfield
for us this year. He will be a leader for our
team, but also a distributor because his ability to
hold the ball is simply incredible,” Coach Okpodu
stated.
Newberry’s defense will be anchored by returning
starter Jeff Bell (North Augusta, S.C.). The
defense will look to improve upon last year’s goal
against average of 2.10. Last year’s reserves will
need to step up and fill holes left in the defensive
line by the 2007 senior class.
The final line of defense for Newberry will be
returning goalkeeper Will Dieterich (Tampa, Fla.),
who started all of 2007’s games. Dieterich recorded
four shutouts while leading Newberry to a 9-10
record. Dieterich, who already has the record for
career shutouts, will need a good year in goal to
make up for a inexperienced defense.
Incoming players as always will need to adjust
to the speed of the college game if they wish
to play a significant role on the team. However,
Coach Okpodu expects Trey Boyd, Stephan Bass,
Jason Large and Justin Blomdahl to challenge for
considerable playing time and possible starting
positions.
All in all, the Newberry men’s soccer team
should have another exciting fall season and will
be in serious contention to compete for one of the
coveted top four positions in the SAC under the
direction of coach Okpodu.

Sam Okpodu enters his fifth year as the head coach of the Newberry men’s soccer
team after four successful seasons at the helm of the scarlet and gray.
The 2006 season saw coach Okpodu lead Newberry to a 9-10 record overall and
a 2-5 record in the South Atlantic Conference, finishing sixth. Three total players
were placed on the all-SAC first and second teams.
In 2005, Newberry went 7-9-2 overall and 1-6 in SAC play. Okpodu led Newberry
to a 9-7-2 overall record and a 3-3-1 South Atlantic Conference record in 2004,
both tops in school history. The men also finished fifth in the SAC, their highest
conference finish ever.
The success found in 2004 included two all-conference selections and one allregion
selection. Newberry finished the season ranked eighth in the National Soccer
Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Appalachian Region rankings, also
a first for the program.
In addition to compiling the best overall and conference records in program
history, the men also racked up an eight match unbeaten streak in 2004, another
school best.
Prior to his work with Newberry, Okpodu boasts 18 years of coaching experience
on the amateur, collegiate, semiprofessional, and international levels. He
coached the Virginia Tech women’s Division I program for 10 seasons and he has
served as a consultant for the Delta United Soccer Club, a professional men’s team
in Nigeria. While overseas, he also guided the Nigerian women’s national team to its third African
Women’s Soccer Championship in 2002.
A graduate of North Carolina State University, Okpodu was a three-time All-American and still is the
all-time Atlantic Coast Conference leading scorer with 193 points. He started all 77 games of his career,
and participated in postseason play three of his four years.
After his professional career with the Orlando Lions (United States Soccer Federation) and a stint
at the helm of the Raleigh United Soccer Club, Okpodu returned to the Wolfpack as an assistant coach
before taking the reins of the Virginia Tech program. His Hokie squads graduated 95% of its players.
In 2002, Okpodu was recognized as one of 55 people to be selected to the ACC 50th Anniversary
Team for his accomplishments as a player at N.C. State. The team was voted on by seven league institutions
that sponsor men’s soccer as decided by the league’s 50th Anniversary Committee.
Okpodu, a Nigerian-born U.S. citizen, holds licenses and diplomas with the USSF and the NSCAA.
He fills the role of advisor and consultant for the International Soccer Network, Inc., based in Blacksburg,
Va.

Jeffrey
Taylor
Assistant Coach
Newberry ‘07
Jeffrey Taylor begins his first season as assistant men’s soccer coach in 2008.
Taylor graduated from Newberry in 2007 and served last year as the team’s student
assistant.
During the four years of his playing career at Newberry, Taylor amassed 17
goals and 13 assists, which ranks him fifth all-time with 47 career points. Taylor
was a starter all four years at Newberry and was named to the preseason all-South
Atlantic Conference second team in 2006.
A native of Sumter, S.C., Taylor graduated from Sumter HS, where he played
varsity soccer all four years. His high school playing career was beyond successful
as he finished as South Carolina’s all time leading scorer with 110 goals. Taylor
was also named an all-region player all four years and an all-state player his senior
year.

Newberry Men’s Soccer
2007 Season in Review
2007 Recap
The Newberry men’s soccer team took new steps in the 2007 season towards
becoming a legitimate champion contender both in the South Atlantic
Conference and in the Appalachian Region.
Newberry matched their team record for wins in a season with nine victories.
The team also managed to improve on the offensive end of the pitch
after struggling to score in 2006.
The scarlet and gray began the year with a 6-2 win over Anderson University
and a 5-1 win over Erskine College. Debola Ogunseye (Lagos, Nigeria)
scored four goals in the first two games, including a hat trick against Anderson.
Kwame Gyamfi (Accra, Ghana), a junior transfer from Lander, also
contributed four goals in the two games, scoring two in each contest.
With the two dominant wins Newberry found itself nationally ranked for
the first time in team history. Newberry was ranked 21st in the country in
the adidas/NSCAA National poll released August 28. Ogunseye was also
awarded the South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week for his four goal,
one assist performance.
The team next traveled to No. 15 ranked Limestone College for a battle of
nationally ranked teams. Newberry came out flat and quickly fell behind
the Saints, losing the game 3-0.
Newberry recovered from the loss with two straight shutout victories over
USC Aiken and Brevard. With the two shutouts Will Dieterich (Tampa, Fla.)
tied the Newberry records for both career shutouts and shutouts in a season.
Gyamfi scored two goals over Brevard while Ogunseye notched one
goal in each game for Newberry.
After starting 4-1, Newberry dropped its next two games to Lincoln Memorial
and Belmont Abbey to fall to 4-3 heading towards the midway point
of the season.
The scarlet and gray returned home to host USC Upstate, a team that recently
jumped to Division I. After falling behind 1-0 in the first half, Newberry
controlled the second half, scoring three goals for a 3-1 victory. The
win was the first in team history over a DI opponent.
The victory over Upstate was the beginning of a three game win streak as
Newberry beat Mars Hill, 1-0 and Francis Marion, 5-4. Dieterich’s shutout
of Mar Hill gave him the records for shutouts in a season and career shutouts.
While Ogunseye recorded five goals in the two games, including four
against the Patriots of Francis Marion.
Just over halfway through the season Newberry was in good shape with
a record of 7-3. Unfortunately the team struggled through a second half
swoon for the second straight year as the scarlet and gray went just 2-7 to
end the year.
Newberry’s two wins came in back to back games over West Virginia Wesleyan
and Catawba College. Ogunseye scored three goals in the two games,
winning SAC Player of the Week for the second time in the 2007 season. The
junior forward was the only player all season to win the award twice.
Newberry ended the regular season with a record of 9-9 and 2-5 in the
slotted them into the 6th seed which meant traveling to Wingate N.C. to
play the Wingate Bulldogs in the first round.
Newberry was never able to get going against Wingate losing 1-0. Dieterich
played well in goal, making nine saves to keep Newberry in the match.
Ogunseye ended the year leading Newberry in goals, with 17, and points,
with 37. He finished third in the SAC in both categories and earned First
Team All-SAC honors. The junior forward was also recognized as one of
Gyamfi and junior transfer Shane Abbott (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) were named
Second Team All-SAC for their performances.
Despite the disappointing finish, Newberry has a lot of positive points to
build on heading into the 2008 season. Seven starters including the top four
goal scorers are returning to a team that showed a lot of promise in the 2007
season, and Newberry will look to fulfill that promise in the future.
The South Atlantic Conference has experienced and enjoyed over 30 years of athletic tradition
and excellence. The conference has been tremendously successful due to dedicated
people building a premier athletic conference throughout its history.
The distant forerunner of the South Atlantic Conference was the North State Atlantic Conference
(NSIAC). The NSIAC was formed when the “Little Six”, as it was called, broke from
the North Carolina Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1930. These charter members included
Lenoir-Rhyne College, Atlantic Christian, Catawba College, Guilford College, Elon
College, and High Point University.
The North State continued to grow over the next 30 years, adding Western Carolina (1933),
East Carolina (1947) and Pfeiffer (1960). A name change became necessary when the league
accepted Newberry as its first South Carolina member in 1961. The league took on the name
Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAC) on May 20th of that year.
The CIAC saw several changes in the following years as East Carolina withdrew from the
league in 1962. Appalachian State and Western Carolina followed in 1971 and 1976. All three
landed in the Southern Conference.
The South Atlantic Conference was founded in 1975 solely as a football conference. The
league received its name from a contest in which Kurt Brenneman of Greensboro, NC became
the first to submit the SAC-8 moniker.
The SAC-8 consisted of Carson-Newman College, Catawba College, Elon College, Gardner-
Webb University, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Mars Hill College, Newberry College, and Presbyterian
College. Dr. Fred Bentley, of Mars Hill College, was named league president for its
inaugural year, by a vote of the member institutions.
After the first season of play in the SAC-8, the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne College captured the
first football title.
In 1989, the league’s 15th year of operation, the South Atlantic Conference became a comprehensive,
all-sports conference. That year the South Atlantic Conference sponsored 10
sports - football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s soccer, volleyball,
men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis. Later the conference grew to 14 championship sports
by adding women ‘s soccer (1990), men’s and women’s cross country (1993) and women’s
golf (1999).
The South Atlantic Conference was composed of the same eight member institutions from
1975 until 1988, when Wingate University replaced Newberry College as the eighth member
institution. Newberry later rejoined the conference in 1996.
Today the conference is a group of nine private, liberal and civic arts colleges and universities,
similar in size and athletic philosophy. Since becoming eligible for NCAA Division II
postseason play in 1993, the league has sent representatives from all of its sponsored sports
to NCAA postseason play.
In July of 1998, Tusculum College was admitted as a member of the league, and Lincoln
Memorial University began play in the conference in the 2006-07 academic year. The league
membership now includes Brevard College in Brevard, N.C.; Carson-Newman in Jefferson
City, TN; Catawba College in Salisbury, NC; Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, NC; Lincoln
Memorial University in Harrogate, TN; Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, NC; Newberry College
in Newberry, SC; Tusculum College in Greeneville, TN; and Wingate University in
Wingate, NC.
