COACH ‘EM UP!
Newberry head coach Dave Davis had a reputation for winning
at Pfeiffer which he is working on continuing at Newberry. After
13 wins last season, Davis now has 356 wins entering his 21st
season.
Davis ranks as the 36th winningest active coach in Division
II. With a 20-win season this year, Davis could pass the 375 win
mark this season.
THANKS FOR THE BALL!
A hallmark of Newberry’s “all out, all the time” style is defensive
pressure. Making your opponent make mistakes can only help
yourself.
That harrassment helped Newberry force 24.4 turnovers per
game and have a plus-1.7 turnover margin.
At Carson-Newman, the Wolves set what may be an unofficial
SAC record, as C-N turned the ball over 39 times, a rate of
nearly a turnover per minute.
At 12.7 steals per game, the Wolves finished second nationally
in that category
The SAC record for steals per game average is 13.68, set by
Mars Hill in 2008-09 (383 steals in 28 games).
DONATING AT THE CHARITY STRIPE
In 2010-11, the Wolves obliterated the South Atlantic Conference
record for the most free throws attempted in a season, with
900 attempts at the free throw stripe in 27 games.
The previous record was 863 attempts in 34 games by the
2006-07 Wingate squad.
Newberry also set the SAC record for made free throws, with
599 made free throws, breaking the 2006-07 Wingate team’s record
of 568.
Newberry’s opponents also set the SAC record for free throws
made (649, old record was 524), and attempts (880, old record
790). The opponents’ free throw percentage was also a SAC record
(.738, old record .731).
ON THE BOARDS
Newberry’s all-out style requires the players to crash the boards
on missed shots, and with that will come some gaudy numbers.
The Wolves tied a SAC record for most rebounds in a season
with 43.6 rebounds per game. The 2009-10 Lincoln Memorial
team also had 43.6 rpg.
Newberry’s average of 17.9 offensive rebounds per game also
broke the previous SAC record of 16.07 orpg set by the 2009-10
Mars Hill squad.
TICKLING THE TWINE
While the win-loss record wasn’t in Newberry’s favor all of the
time, the Wolves continued to put on an impressive offensive
display in 2010-11, ranking sixth nationally in points per game
at the end of the season.
