<strong>The</strong> VSO’s <strong>December</strong> <strong>Concert</strong> <strong>Listing</strong><br />
<strong>Vancouver</strong>, BC – <strong>The</strong> holiday season at the VSO kicks off with the Barenaked Ladies in a unique evening<br />
featuring outstanding orchestral arrangements of their greatest hits and holiday favourites on Friday,<br />
November 30, 8pm, at the Orpheum <strong>The</strong>atre.<br />
<strong>December</strong> begins with violinist Elina Vähälä performing Mozart’s Violin <strong>Concert</strong>o No. 4. One of the soughtafter<br />
instrumentalists in the international music scene, Elina Vähälä receives rave reviews for her<br />
performances all around the world, and she makes her VSO debut at this Musically Speaking concert that<br />
features informal and informative dialogue about the composers and their music, and video screens bringing<br />
exciting close-ups of all the action on-stage to every seat in the house. <strong>The</strong> concert is conducted by former VSO<br />
Associate Conductor and current Victoria <strong>Symphony</strong> Music Director Tania Miller, and also features<br />
Beethoven’s <strong>Symphony</strong> No. 7, one of his greatest and most popular symphonies.<br />
Next, accomplished English conductor Mark Wigglesworth will guide the orchestra through Schubert’s<br />
beautiful Unfinished <strong>Symphony</strong> and Bruckner’s mighty <strong>Symphony</strong> No. 7. Mark Wigglesworth has guest<br />
conducted many of Europe and North America’s finest ensembles, in addition to concerts with most of the<br />
UK’s orchestras. In his VSO debut, he conducts two works of great contrast: the heart-rending beauty of<br />
Schubert’s work, and the astonishing grandeur of Bruckner’s epic <strong>Symphony</strong> No. 7, a work that marked the<br />
greatest success of Bruckner’s life.<br />
<strong>The</strong> VSO’s beloved annual tradition, Traditional Christmas, begins on <strong>December</strong> 13 th and takes the <strong>Symphony</strong><br />
throughout the lower mainland. It is a beautiful performance of heartwarming Christmas music and carols,<br />
hosted by the inimitable Christopher Gaze and featuring the UBC Opera Ensemble and EnChor, with VSO<br />
Assistant Conductor Gordon Gerrard at the helm. <strong>Concert</strong>s take place at St. Andrew’s Wesley Church in<br />
downtown <strong>Vancouver</strong>, and in Surrey, North <strong>Vancouver</strong>, West <strong>Vancouver</strong>, South Delta, Burnaby and Maple<br />
Ridge.<br />
<strong>December</strong> comes to a close as acclaimed VSO <strong>Concert</strong>master Dale Barltrop reprises his Four Seasons<br />
performance of two years ago, a performance that had audiences leaping to their feet. This time around, you’ll<br />
hear Vivaldi’s timeless classic and Astor Piazzolla’s sensational, tango-flavoured <strong>The</strong> Four Seasons of Buenos<br />
Aires for Violin and Strings.<br />
