Service
In just over five years’ time
and with a streamlined staff,
InfraConsult has achieved a
reputation for providing superior
service. What sets us apart from
other firms
Our innovation, experience,
commitment and matchless
service are our core strengths.
What we have chosen to do, we
do very well.
This issue of InfraInfo explores the
ways we deliver amazing service
and what that service really
means to our company and to our
clients.
It’s an exciting time for our company! We are seeing an increase in repeat business
and felt it was a good time to examine why we are experiencing the trend.
Naturally the company name is much more commonly known than in the first
few years of the firm’s operation. But familiarity is not the key factor to establishing
repeat business - exceptional client relationships are.
Over the years we’ve been in business we’ve had the good fortune to build lasting
relationships with our partners in governing bodies, agencies and companies
around the world. It is an enormous vote of confidence each time one of these
decision makers chooses to do business with us again.
A few examples of these client partners are: San Francisco County Transportation
Authority, Valley METRO Rail, San Diego Association of Governments, the City
of Los Angeles, and the City and County of Honolulu (and its successor agency
Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transit {HART}). We’re grateful for the opportunities
they provide us and continue to strive to deliver the best work products and
service possible to our long-term clients as well as those with whom we are establishing
new relationships.
InfraConsult Opens Fifth Office
Albuquerque, New Mexico - home of the fifth
InfraConsult office.
Yes, you read that headline right! It
is so similar to the one from the last
newsletter when the fourth company
office was announced, it might
have had you wondering! But it’s
true - InfraConsult has now established
offices in five U.S. cities.
The office will house staff working
on the new ABQ RIDE contract to
provide engineering consulting services
for an Alternatives Analysis, NEPA documentation and other work related to
the state’s first bus rapid transit project. Among the staff located at this office are
Andres Viamonte, project manager and David Leard, engineering and conceptual
design manager.
InfraConsult is the prime contractor on this project. Other members of the project
team are: Parsons Brinckerhoff, Dekker Perrich Sabatini, Sharon Greene + Associates,
Planning Technologies, Terracon Consultants, Tom Mann and Associates,
and TBE Group.
Avoid Getting the Office Cold or Flu
Can you stay cold- and flu-free
while working in an office The
Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) say getting
plenty of sleep, being physically
active, managing your stress,
drinking plenty of fluids, and eating
nutritious food are the healthy habits
that will keep you healthy during flu season and all year.
That may sound like a tall order, so while working those
new habits in to your routine, here are a few simple ideas
that can help, too..
Quick Tips for Staying Healthy
1
Wash your hands often. You may take care to cover
your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing
but others may not. If you use someone else’s
telephone at your work place, wash your hands after
doing so. The CDC advises “Lather with soap
and warm water, then rub your hands vigorously
together and scrub all surfaces. Wash for 15 to 20
seconds. It is the soap combined with the scrubbing
action that helps dislodge and remove germs.”
2
3
4
5
Cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze or
cough. Better to use a sleeve, than a hand. Keep a box
of tissues on your desk so you can grab one quickly
when necessary. If you sneeze before you can grab a
tissue, do not touch your nose or face, instead wash
your hands immediately.
Do not keep used tissues on your desk. If you do not
have a waste paper basket near you use a small plastic
bag to dispose of used tissues.
Keep alcohol-based disposable hand wipes or gel
sanitizers at your desk. The gel is easy to use; rub it
on your hands until your hands are dry. The alcohol in
the hand wipes and the gel will help to kill the germs.
Use a paper towel to open the door of a public lavatory
after you have washed your hands. Door handles
are laden with germs.
Finally, if you do find that you have caught a cold or the flu,
take the CDC’s practical advice: Stay home and get plenty
of rest. Don’t forget to call and get advice from your doctor
if you are not feeling better after a few days.
Sustainability Program Update
The year 2011 was an exciting year for the firm, not only
because of the increase in business opportunities and
exciting project milestones, but in 2011 we also
made great strides in our commitment to
sustainability.
The 2011 Annual APTA Sustainability
Commitment Survey results are in and
they show marked improvement in a
number of categories. Here are a few
interesting highlights:
Recycling
Conserving wood-related resources is a key element
of sustainability. Contributing toward that conservation,
100% of employees use the paper recycling
bins and 64% of employees report they use the bins for
more than half of their paper waste.
Use of Plastic
To reduce plastic waste, 67% of employees use permanent
utensils rather than disposable, plastic
utensils in the office.
Printing
Reducing hardcopy printing helps
conserve paper products, reduce environmentally-unfriendly
ink and ink
cartridges, and saves energy. At Infra-
Consult, 63% of employees print fewer
than 50 pages of paper per week.
Energy
Turning off lights when not in use has become commonplace.
But, computers also require energy when left on. To
conserve that energy, 97% of employees leave their computers
off or in sleep mode when out of the office.
Project Updates
Albuquerque Ride Bus Rapid Transit Project: In February, InfraConsult will begin
work on this new project to prepare an Alternatives Analysis (AA) and a NEPA document,
among other tasks, for ABQ RIDE. The project was awarded after the Albuquerque
City Council voted to accept RIDE’s recommendation for the InfraConsult
team to lead the effort.
METRO Public Involvement Services - Phoenix West Extension: InfraConsult recently received a 6-month extension
to the contract; the second extension given to the firm on this project to extend Phoenix’s METRO light rail
system. Over the past several months, project staff have been working to update the city’s newly-elected Mayor and
council members on the project. The project is in the Alternatives Analysis phase of development and is expected to
bring a Locally Preferred Alternative recommendation to decision-making groups in the next few months.
Honolulu Rail Transit Project (formerly Honolulu High Capacity
Transit Corridor Project [HHCTCP]): The Honolulu Rail Transit
Project achieved a major milestone with its approval to enter into
Final Design. The green light from the FTA marks the final stage of
pre-construction development. Construction will soon advance to
include the foundations and columns for the elevated guideway of
the 20-mile transit line.
In the months ahead, InfraConsult’s Honolulu team will help the project chart its course to secure a Full Funding
Grant Agreement (FFGA) with the FTA. That FFGA will solidify $1.55 billion in federal funding for the $5.17-billion
transit project. The Honolulu Rail Transit Project, formerly referred to as the Honolulu High-Capacity Transit Corridor
Project, is the largest public works project in Hawaii’s history. It is also InfraConsult’s first major engagement --- the
company was established in 2006 and it was selected as the Program Management Support Consultant for the Honolulu
project in early 2007.
Los Angeles Streetcar Project: Project Manager Tom Jenkins reports that the Alternatives
Analysis has been submitted to FTA for this project to restore historic streetcar
service to downtown Los Angeles. Project staff also notes that LA Metro expects
to act on a Locally Preferred Alternative during March or April 2012. The process and
possible local funding options have become very complicated because of the action
by the State of California to discontinue redevelopment agencies.
METRO Consulting Support Services: InfraConsult, as a subcontractor to ARCADIS, is providing safety and security
services to Valley Metro Rail (METRO) on the agency’s 3.1-mile Mesa light rail extension. Led by Larry Engleman,
Larry and Henry Miranda are working with METRO as they prepare to begin the Valley’s first Design/Build contract. In
addition this contract allows InfraConsult to provide similar services on additional extensions to Metro’s LRT system.
Western High Speed Rail Alliance (WHSRA) Rail Ahead Conference: In November,
InfraConsult staff traveled to Las Vegas to assist the members of the WHSRA in conducting
their second annual conference. The conference was a great success bringing
members of high speed rail organizations together from around the world. With
presenters from Europe and Asia, as well as an exciting pre-conference address from
Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval, the conference was a well-balanced, informative
and inspirational event. The day prior to the conference the Federal Railway Administration
(FRA) hosted a workshop in conjunction with the Nevada Department of Transportation.
Workshop participants had the opportunity to brainstorm potential routes
for a high-speed rail network in Nevada, California and Arizona. For more information
or to view presentations given at the conference visit www.whsra.com.
I-405 Managed Lanes Study: This project, also known as the San Diego Freeway (I-405) Improvement Project proposes
to add new lanes to Interstate 405 between State Route 73 and the San Gabriel River Freeway (Interstate 605),
To date InfraConsult has analyzed the traffic and revenue forecast and construction cost estimate and revised them
to reflect the project strategy developed jointly with the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA). InfraConsult
has also prepared independent estimates of express lane operation and maintenance costs, and expected nontoll
revenue. This information has been provided to Sperry Capital and KPMG who are both running financial models
for the feasibility study. A presentation of results to the OCTA board is expected in March.
High Speed Rail/Intercity Rail Planning for San Francisco County
Transportation Authority: In October, project staff facilitated and reported
on a design charette in San Francisco related to this project to
deliver higher speed service along the CalTrain alignment with an earlier
delivery date than currently planned. InfraConsult also recently delivered
the draft report on cost-saving alternatives. In November, staff attended
the CHSRA November 2011 Board Meeting where the key features of the
California High-Speed Rail Program Draft 2012 Business Plan were presented.
Subsequent to that, staff provided comments on the Draft Business
Plan on behalf of SFCTA.
Currently the project team is working with SFCTA on a cost-effective delivery mechanism and strategy for the Caltrain/CAHSR
Peninsula Initial Operating Section (PIOS) which will integrate CAHSR services with the existing Caltrain
services to bring high speed rail into downtown San Francisco from San Jose, using a “blended” operation. This
“blended” system is expected to utilize current Caltrain right-of-way and infrastructure. The project team is awaiting
comments on the feasibility study draft report that was submitted to SFCTA last month.
605 Hot Spots: At this point in our work to assist the Gateway Cities Council of Governments with developing an
improvement plan for the I-605, SR-91, I-405, and I-105 freeway corridors and preparing a Transportation Strategic
and Funding Plan, project staff has identified the full list of planned and potential transportation projects in the
Gateway Cities area including available information on project cost and development status, and identified possible
funding sources for the types of projects in the list. The project team will soon be evaluating the relationships
between the major projects and other projects on the list. The draft Transportation Strategic Plan (Phase I) will be
submitted in April.
Mid-Coast Corridor Project: The Mid-Coast Corridor Transit Project – an LRT
extension of the San Diego Blue Line from the Santa Fe depot to University
City via UCSD – is moving along on schedule. The FTA gave the formal approval
for the project to move into the Preliminary Engineering phase in September
of 2011. Since that time project staff has been working to prepare the
Draft SEIS/SEIR. Project management staff indicates these documents will be
ready for public review in late summer 2012.
