Issue 4, August 2008
FROM THE DIRECTOR
Dear Colleagues,
Welcome to the August edition of the Student Management Bulletin.
This may very well be the last edition of the Bulletin, as we are pleased to announce that
Professor Joan Cooper, PVC (Students) & Registrar has initiated a monthly staff newsletter –
The PVC Pipeline – to inform colleagues of ‘events, processes, and deadlines relevant to
services that support core business activities within the PVC (Students) domain’. Articles
from Student Management will make a regular appearance in Pipeline and, indeed, those
of you on its circulation list may well experience déjà vu when you receive the first
edition.
In addition to Pipeline, Student Management teams will continue to communicate regularly
with colleagues across campus via our usual mechanisms of email distribution lists, such
as ‘nss-explode’, and myUNSW notices. We would be happy to continue with an informal
version of Bulletin, for those staff whose primary focus is student administration. However,
we need feedback from you, as to whether or not this would be welcome. Silence will be
taken to mean ‘no’!
For now, I commend the team articles to you, and wish you well for the coming Semester.
Kind regards,
Kathryn Whittingham
UAC ADMISSIONS TEAM
New process for deferments
Letters have been mailed recently to the 900+ local students who deferred their
offer of a place in Semester 1 or Semester 2 2008 to advise that they can log on to
myUNSW from Monday 18 August to Friday 28 November to take up their
deferred offer in Semester 1 2009 rather than lodging an application via UAC.
2009 UAC Guide
UAC applications open in early August via UAC’s website. Reference copies of the
2009 Guide will be distributed to Faculties and Schools in the near future. Also
included in the Guide mail-out will be information on Key Dates for 2009
Admissions and Undergraduate Application Procedures for 2009.
**On time UAC applications for admission in Semester 1, 2009 close on 30
DIRECT ADMISSIONS
Comparative statistics continue to be run and distributed on regular basis, with numbers reflecting continuing growth in the international areas.
Subscribers should note, while looking at international undergraduate figures, that Semester 2 2007 includes students transferring from UNSW
Asia (some 130), therefore presenting a slight skewering of the overall picture. For a historical perspective, the comparison below gives a picture
of Semester 2 2006 vs. Semester 2 2008.
To be added to the distribution list please email Ken Bright at K.Bright@unsw.edu.au.
Arab and Gulf students: workshop and seminar
With the University continuing to put resources into marketing and recruitment activities from scholarship-driven regions such as Saudi Arabia, the
Direct Admissions office has recently participated in an Arab and Gulf students briefing seminar and workshop to help facilitate communication
and continue our positive interaction with this growing region.
Staff were given a cultural and historical overview of the region and work-shopped different approaches and responses to various student
scenarios. The information should prove to be invaluable for the upcoming IDP Gulf States Recruitment Roadshow.

EXAMINATIONS: SEMESTER 2 2008
By now you will have received advice about Semester 2 2008 examination timelines - yes, they
are tight! Due to space restrictions and the framework of the academic calendar, the University
has no alternatives other than the published timelines.
The Examinations Team cannot begin to create a timetable until after Census Date and, in S2 08,
that is the end of Week 5, and so we have an extremely short period (the shortest ever) to create
a very complex timetable, accommodating 3 sessions a day and, a virtual shut-down for a week
due to the Melbourne Cup.
As for exam paper submission, we need to proof read (though we shouldn't really have to do this
should we), print, and 'pack' papers, materials etc. by venue / by day for the 500 odd exams we
run. These tasks need to be completed by the end of Week 11, as Week 12 is entirely devoted to
the logistical organisation of special exams - for students with disabilities etc. - and even this is
too little time (it can take up to 4 weeks to covert an exam paper into Braille for example). We
then have 2 days to physically set up our exam rooms, and there are just 3 of us...
The processing schedule for S2 08 exams will be:
Friday 29 August
Deadline to:
• update examinable courses details on myUNSW
• submit special timetabling requests via myUNSW
• submit master copies of exam papers for printing by Examinations
• submit exam papers printed by academic units
Tuesday 7 October
• Provisional Timetable published
Friday 10 October
Deadline to:
• submit requests for timetable changes
Tuesday 14 October
• Final Timetable published
Wednesday 29 October
• Exams commence
