Impact of Escapes Sub Group.
Reinhold Fieler gave a PowerPoint presentation on the ‘Impact of Escapes in Norway’. This
presentation will be put on the website. (Sub­Group folder/Escapes and in WP6 documents)

Yannis has requested Insurance data from fish farms in the UK regarding level of cover,
recognised risks etc. Reinold may be able to provide this information for Norway.

It was thought there could be collaboration within the UK group with the overlap of interest
between Keyzones and ECASA:
· continue to collect data from the sites used in Celine Laurents thesis (in accordance with FOI
guidelines Celines data will be available from June 2006)
· use the ecowin model
It was suggested that an indicator addressing water quality standards (re FSA and shellfish
testing) would be useful. Suggestions for the development of such an indicator were faecal
colliforms, viruses and E. coli. Action Point Kenny Black, Napier participant.
The impact of HABS on fish farms should also be considered.
There was continued discussion on collaboration between ECASA, Keyzones and Paul’s earlier
work to investigate the possibility of integrating indicators and whether it would be possible to

combine models into a common package. There will be an investigation into how in principle and
how in practice this would develop, depending on the indicators delivered from WP2 and 3.
A small group of ECASA participants will combine to form a Modelling Group and produce an
initial draft on how models could be integrated.

It was noted that the indicator sheet did not list standards. Standards will be requested for all
submitted indicators.

Background data for fin fish culture could be collected during ECASA with data on shellfish
culture provided by Keyzones.
A list of indicators for one of the proposed UK sites, Loch Creran, was discussed. These are listed
below:
Growth rates,
Food supply,
FCR,
Particulates,
Optical conditions,
Total N & P,
DOC, DON, DOP,
Dissolved inorganic and organic matter,
Phytoplankton composition,
Bacteria/viruses
It was thought that it would be useful to carry out sampling of the rivers feeding into the Loch at
the same time as the marine sampling was occurring.

Oxygen and nutrient fluxes will be investigated in Creran.
An information sheet on the second proposed UK site at Vidlin in Shetland will be produced,
detailing the type of culture carried out on the site, the availability of historic data and any other
relevant activities.
David Whitmarsh gave a presentation on the briefing note circulated to all participants last month
discussing public perceptions towards aquaculture. A questionnaire will be developed and
circulated to all partners.

An initial trial of this questionnaire will occur in Scotland, targeting stakeholders, politicians and
the public.

It was highlighted that participants should not feel constrained by the Work Package time
allocation as detailed in the effort form but should feel free to become involved in other Work
Package activities that are of interest. In particular PML were encouraged to participate more
fully in Work Package 4.
