A. Audio Recordings<br />

<strong>The</strong> audio recordings in the <strong>David</strong> <strong>Tudor</strong> <strong>Papers</strong> consist of approximately 600 audio tapes of <strong>Tudor</strong>'s<br />

performances, the performances of others, and <strong>Tudor</strong>'s found sounds. Recordings have been<br />

transferred from audio cassette tapes, digital audio tapes (DAT), and reel-to-reel tapes.<br />

Tapes have been reformatted, except for a few that were damaged and a few blank and duplicate tapes.<br />

Tapes were reformatted by John D.S. Adams and Tom Erbe, 1999-2002.<br />

Digitized versions are available online. Access is available only to on-site readers and <strong>Getty</strong> staff.<br />

Box numbers refer to the location of physical Use Copies.<br />

Times are approximate and stated in (HH:MM:SS) format, where HH is number of hours, MM is number<br />

of minutes, and SS is number of seconds.<br />

Source Sounds<br />

This group of audio recordings consists of recorded sounds such as field recordings, sound effects<br />

compilations, and test recordings. <strong>The</strong>y have been divided into the following groups: Animal and Insect<br />

Sounds, Earth Sounds, Storm Sounds, Water Sounds, and Other Sounds.<br />

Other Sounds has been further divided into Electronic Sounds and Natural Sounds. Electronic Sounds<br />

includes recordings that were electronically produced and/or appear to have been modified<br />

electronically. Natural Sounds includes recordings that appear to have had no electronic or soundmodification<br />

This group of audio recordings includes recordings of performances by <strong>David</strong> <strong>Tudor</strong>. <strong>The</strong>y have been<br />

divided into two groups: Historical Recordings and Other Recordings.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Historical Recordings from the <strong>David</strong> <strong>Tudor</strong> <strong>Papers</strong> consist of recordings of <strong>David</strong> <strong>Tudor</strong> performing<br />

piano pieces. Included in this group are recordings (transferred from audio cassette tapes donated to<br />

the repository by John Holzaepfel in 2001) of <strong>David</strong> <strong>Tudor</strong>’s performances at the Internationale<br />

Ferienkurse für Neue Musik Darmstadt, 1956, 1958, 1959, 1961. <strong>The</strong>y were recorded by IFNM,<br />

Darmstadt 1994, 2001. N.B. For these particular tapes, <strong>Tudor</strong> performs on all pieces, except where<br />

noted: i.e. Christian Wolff performing Cage piece (without <strong>Tudor</strong>). Other performers with <strong>Tudor</strong> are<br />
