Memphis City Schoolsʼ educators have an excit<strong>in</strong>g opportunity to be leaders among their<br />

peers. With the generous support of our community partners and the Bill & Mel<strong>in</strong>da Gates<br />

Foundation, we are <strong>in</strong> the midst of a transformative effort that is chang<strong>in</strong>g the teach<strong>in</strong>g<br />

profession <strong>in</strong> MCS for the better and improv<strong>in</strong>g the education we offer our children.<br />

The active <strong>in</strong>volvement of all <strong>teacher</strong>s <strong>in</strong> this work is crucial if we are to succeed for our<br />

students.<br />

Thatʼs where Ambassadors come <strong>in</strong>.<br />

To lead this <strong>in</strong>volvement, one or two <strong>teacher</strong>s from each <strong>school</strong> will be chosen to serve as<br />

Ambassadors and be the catalysts for change <strong>in</strong> their <strong>school</strong> community. The Teacher<br />

Ambassador Program provides <strong>teacher</strong>s with an opportunity to play a critical role <strong>in</strong><br />

reform<strong>in</strong>g MCS. Ambassadors are <strong>in</strong>formed advocates of the educational and cultural<br />

changes tak<strong>in</strong>g place <strong>in</strong> the teach<strong>in</strong>g profession <strong>in</strong> Memphis.<br />

Be<strong>in</strong>g an Ambassador means…<br />

Lead<strong>in</strong>g Your Peers Teachers: Empower<strong>in</strong>g and motivat<strong>in</strong>g colleagues to cont<strong>in</strong>uously<br />

develop their skills and talents; be<strong>in</strong>g subject-matter experts <strong>in</strong> the reform work.<br />

Develop<strong>in</strong>g and Implement<strong>in</strong>g a <strong>school</strong>-wide communications plan: Identify<strong>in</strong>g best<br />

methods of educat<strong>in</strong>g colleagues on reform and engag<strong>in</strong>g them to contribute their questions,<br />

comments, and feedback; lead discussions about the policies, practices and impacts of<br />

reform; facilitat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>creased communications between <strong>teacher</strong>s and adm<strong>in</strong>istrators.<br />

Mobiliz<strong>in</strong>g and Support<strong>in</strong>g Pr<strong>in</strong>cipals and Assistant Pr<strong>in</strong>cipals: Build<strong>in</strong>g relationships<br />

with <strong>school</strong>-level leaders; Meet<strong>in</strong>g monthly and collaborat<strong>in</strong>g to share updates on <strong>teacher</strong><br />

effectiveness efforts and identify<strong>in</strong>g <strong>teacher</strong>sʼ needs and concerns.<br />

Advocat<strong>in</strong>g for Teachers: Present<strong>in</strong>g district leadership with their needs and ensur<strong>in</strong>g they<br />

receive necessary supports and assistance for their growth.<br />

Ambassadors can play a vital role <strong>in</strong> the districtʼs transformation—a transformation that is<br />

mak<strong>in</strong>g Memphis an education-reform leader <strong>in</strong> the state and the nation. They are regarded<br />

by the <strong>school</strong> community as a professional resource for educat<strong>in</strong>g others on the reform work.<br />

Along with the duties of be<strong>in</strong>g Ambassadors, there are many privileges:<br />

Professional Growth: Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g sessions <strong>in</strong> leadership development, effective<br />

communications plann<strong>in</strong>g, public speak<strong>in</strong>g, project management, and facilitat<strong>in</strong>g change.<br />

Recognition and Awards Events: Ambassador-only celebrations and recognition<br />

<strong>program</strong>s.<br />

Policy Events: Eligibility to participate <strong>in</strong> educational events and discussions with leaders<br />

from the fields of public policy and education.<br />

F<strong>in</strong>ancial Stipend: $250 per semester and possibility of reward for Ambassador of the<br />

Month.<br />

The Teacher Ambassador Program is truly a unique opportunity for <strong>teacher</strong>s to engage <strong>in</strong><br />

the professional growth of our districtʼs <strong>teacher</strong>s. If you have a real passion for positive<br />

change through <strong>teacher</strong> effectiveness, and a desire to lead that change, donʼt miss <strong>your</strong><br />
