CORPORATE RESOURCES FOR LOCAL DEVELOPMENT IN THE PHILIPPINES
organization chose to create an endowment and how it was created; how the endowment is
invested and managed; the challenges the organization continues to address with its endowment;
and the success factors that other organizations could potentially incorporate into
their fundraising strategies.
The second study analyzes similar issues based on the experience of the Indonesian
Biodiversity Foundation (known by its Indonesian acronym, KEHATI), an organization
originally endowed through foreign government development assistance. The third case
study is on Dian Desa in Indonesia and explores that organization's earned income approach
to building financial sustainability.
It is our hope that this case study will be used as a learning tool by other organizations in
the Philippines and elsewhere in the world that are interested in learning more about the
role of endowments in creating financial sustainability as well as specific opportunities and
challenges associated with creating and growing an endowment. The Jaime V. Ongpin
Foundation is an interesting case that not only highlights the challenges of endowment
building but offers a perspective on early corporate social responsibility in the Philippines.
Synergos gratefully acknowledges the financial support of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation,
the time and input of the staff and board of the Jaime V. Ongpin Foundation, Inc., and Ernie
Garilao and Gil Tuparan for researching and writing the study.
