The pleasures of water? Yes! But we are talking about all the pleasures it
has to offer, be they sporting, discovery, relaxation and even therapeutic.
See for yourself: from north to south, nearly 10,000 hectares of lakes stand
awaiting your visit, from the lakes of the Ardennes to those in the Orient Forest,
via the Langres region and, of course, the vast and majestic Lake Der.
Swimming, water sports or fishing, all are possible in these tranquil waters where
there is something for everyone.Similarly, the region is crisscrossed by 550 km
of inland waterways (both canals and rivers), suggesting a new way of enjoying
the waterside: river cruising. Time slows down, and a different view of the landscape
opens up before you.And then, beyond the water, the shores and banks invite
you up for a walk and to discover the riches - gastronomic, artistic, cultural,
historical - of the surrounding areas.Finally, here, water can be source of well-being.
The charming spa of Bourbonne-les-Bains is invigorating proof of that.
And where is it that all of the various aspects of the pleasures of water
come together in one region? Here in Champagne-Ardenne.

with their energy, the Ardennes lakes are now the perfect illustration of a successful
and ecologically friendly rehabilitation, nature returning to its sources, as it were.

When the first rays of sunshine dispel the last wisps of
morning mist, Lake Vieilles Forges resembles its Canadian
cousins, the Laurentians. In decades past, the people of the
Ardennes created this reservoir for the region's electrical
needs. Today, those same people have restored them to the
full original splendour of nature. The 150 hectare lake offers
a multitude of shared pleasures: for anglers (carp, roach,
perch, pike...), for hikers (the lake is 12 km in circumference),
and all water sports lovers (canoes, dinghies, windsurfers...)
thanks to a wonderful leisure base which also has facilities
for concerts and organising sporting events.

Alongside leisure, there is also a place for culture
at the Vieilles Forges and the Convention Centre,
with its 8 rooms (from 110 m 2 to 1,248 m 2 ) is
designed to play host to high-level events in all
spheres of activity.

The small pond, which was once owned by the monks at the
Mont-Dieu Abbey, has grown into a lake of some 120 hectares
consisting of two parts separated by a dike.The 40 hectares of
the natural lake - a reserve which plays home to magnificent
reed beds - boasts a beautifully preserved ecosystem, a
paradise for birds... and for anglers.On the other hand, the
80 hectares of the reservoir are devoted to water sports of
all kinds (although no motors are allowed!), based at the
departmental leisure centre set on its banks, where all the
family will find something to do.Around the lake, the marked
out footpaths invite you to explore them. Here, everything
revolves around "green tourism", whether it is quiet pleasure
boating, wildlife discovery or simply relaxation, so that
everybody can enjoy what suits them best.

In the south of Champagne, at the gates of Troyes, the great lakes
of the Orient Forest stretch over some 5,000 hectares of water in the heart
of a vast and mysterious forest - Orient Forest, a unique territory conceived by nature
and developed by man: the Orient Forest regional natural Park.

Lake Orient
Although it was initially designed to control flooding on the
River Aube and the Seine, Lake Orient has developed as a
major tourist attraction over the last few years. It takes its
name from the Knights of Orient, Templars and Hospitallers,
the former owners of the Orient forest.
This lake is a place of balance, calm and relaxation,
dedicated to sailing and non-motorised water sports: rowing,
pedal boating, canoeing and diving, and of course sailing in
all its forms (habitable, catamarans, dinghies, windsurfing,
kiteboarding...).
Three beaches of white sand play host to swimmers and
to sailors, because they each boast a marina and all of the
infrastructure necessary for nautical pleasures.

Lake Temple
With 2,000 hectares of calm water, the rugged and unspoilt
beauty of Lake Temple wins the heart of all nature lovers.
Much of the lake is classified as a "national nature reserve",
and it is a place to come and listen to birdsong. But it is also
a paradise for anglers who come here to tickle perch, pike,
carp, roach, tench and catfish (some "records" from the lake:
a 7.3 pound perch, a 39 pound pike, a common carp weighing
in at 66 pounds...).
Lake Amance
Lake Amance is a place where families come and enjoy
themselves. But everyone knows that Port Dienville is also
and above all the port used by boating enthusiasts who come
out from Paris (boating, water skiing, jet skiing, etc...). It is
this last activity which finds its venue of choice here.

There is no shortage of things to do around the lakes
of the Orient Forest. Ornithologists may observe
nearly 267 different species of birds, a 42 km long
bicycle trail offers another way of discovering the
area at your own pace; 2 18-hole golf courses await
golfing enthusiasts and an amusement park will
delight families...

Lake Der
Lake Der
With 4,800 hectares of water (3,500 of which are navigable)
and 77 km of shoreline, Lake Der is one of the largest
lakes in Europe: a genuine inland sea in Champagne,
between Marne and Haute-Marne.

The lake was designed artificially in 1974 to regulate the waters of
the River Marne as it travels to the Seine, and thus avoids flooding in
Paris. When it was flooded, three villages were swallowed up:
Champaubert-aux-Bois (of which all that remains is the church on
the shoreline of the lake), Chantecoq (which has completely
disappeared and the hill that overlooked the village has become an
island) and Nuisement-aux-Bois where the church was dismantled
and rebuilt beam by beam at the Village Museum of Saint-Mariedu-Lac.
Lake Der is surrounded by lush greenery and over the years has
become a major site for water-based and environmental tourism.
All year round, a whole multitude of activities are on offer. Water
sports, hiking, discovery of the half timber churches, bird watching:
the lake is a Mecca for nature lovers.
All sports and water sports are available at Lake Der: sailing
(cruisers, windsurfing, dinghies), water skiing, boat trips, rowing,
canoeing, pedalos, scuba diving...

Three well sheltered marinas provide modern infrastructures in a
beautiful landscape setting.
To the north, the marinas of Nemours and Nuisement are two ports
each offering around 150 moorings for sailboats.
To the south, Giffaumont-Champaubert has one of the largest
freshwater marinas with a capacity for 250 motor boats, 250 sail
boats and 100 rowing boats.
Over the 600 hectares which are set aside especially for them, the
motor boats and jet skis put on quite a show.
Around the lake, 6 beaches with facilities for swimming, and a
lifeguard service in July and August, are a favourite with families
because of their children's playgrounds.
It is not possible to talk about Lake Der without mentioning
the Common Cranes, the lake's most emblematic bird out of the
270 species of birds that stop by here every year. With its 2-metre
wingspan, it is the largest wild bird seen in France.
Between 60,000 and 140,000 common cranes transit by Lake Der
every year on their way to Tunisia or southern Spain.
Common Cranes can be seen from mid-October to mid-March,
at sunrise and sunset, on the lake levees or at the Crane Farm.
The Der Lake is an anglers’ paradise. There are
numerous sheltered spots where you can try your
hand at fishing for carp, pike or catfish. In a boat, or
relaxing by the lake – what more could an angler
want - it really is a truly perfect setting. And
particularly enjoyable is carp fishing at night….and
there are a number of different places especially
equipped for this kind of fishing.

afternoons...In the company of the certified instructor, this is
the opportunity to practice for a whole week during the school
holidays in July/August and to ensure solid foundations for your
sailing skills.
Discovery week-end
2 sessions of 2h30 on Saturday and/or Sunday, mornings or
afternoons...Supervised by a certified instructor, this formula
enables you to progress from time to time between April and
October (prior booking required).

The 4 lakes within a few kilometres of the city of Langres were
all originally designed as reservoirs to supply the Marne-Saône
Canal "between Champagne and Burgundy".
They have now become sites for tourism,
leisure and relaxation.

Lake Liez
It is possible to admire the dam (460 m, completed in 1888)
and the 290 ha of Lake Liez from the ramparts of Langres!
The resort offers numerous water sports activities
(swimming, sailing, pedal boats...). It is also possible to enjoy
waterskiing with a regulatory slalom course, a conventional
ramp and a barefoot ramp. A footpath runs around the lake
(16 km) for hiking or mountain biking.

Lake Charmes
Do fishermen have a "soft spot" for Lake Charmes? It is said
that the best time to discover the lake is in the early morning
mist, when you can just make out the silhouettes of the anglers
and of their boats. But at the foot of its 362 m long breakwater,
the 197 ha of water make it possible to combine both aquatic
adventures and more genteel trips out on the lake, thanks to
the Lake Charmes water sports centre, which offers pedal
boats, canoes and rowing boats and, for the anglers among
you, electric fishing boats or specially adapted fishing canoes.
Lake Mouche
The 410 m dam at Lake Mouche was built between 1881 and
1890 using an innovative technique for the time called the
"semi-viaduct". The villages of St. Ciergues and Perrancey
cast their shadows over the water, which is dominated by the
surrounding hillsides and forests. This magnificent and
beautifully preserved natural site is a great place for a day out
and the 7 km of shoreline can be explored on foot, mountain
bike...

angling. Alongside the perch, zander and catfish,
they are also renowned for the size of their pikes
and carp.

Lake Vingeanne
Not only does it boast the longest levee of the 4 lakes
(1,254 m), built in 1906, but Lake Vingeanne is also especially
popular with bird watchers for the variety of bird species
(sometimes rare) that migrate or stay on much of its
199 hectares - especially in the reed beds in the two bays "at
the tail end of the reservoir". A water sports centre and beach
are reserved for family boating.

River cruising
Whether it is just a trip lasting a few hours (which can be
topped off with a gourmet dinner) or a week-long cruise, not
to mention a weekend escapade, all the formulas you could
imagine are available on the various canals and rivers of
Champagne-Ardenne.
River tourism is freedom in its purest form: you can moor up
when you like to head off on your mountain bike, visiting
architectural and historical heritage sites, doing a spot of
angling in rivers where fish abound or... do nothing at all!

On the Canal des Ardennes, discover the hills as you had
never imagined them before. Stunning and unexpected
scenery, with crazy meanders carved out by the river Meuse
over the centuries. "Head down" to Givet or, if you want to
push on, as far as Namur (Belgium). Along the Canal de l’Est,
the long reaches and verdant scenery show the Meuse is less
"turbulent" as it travels through Lorraine.
The Marne-Saône Canal, between Champagne and
Burgundy, will show you Haute-Marne from an unexpected
angle.
A journey along the Marne takes you between the vineyards
of Champagne.
For a longer " immersion " into life on the river, a number of
loops will take you from one canal to another on a 500 km a
round trip - plan for two or three weeks (but in truth, this
means very little, as time seems to stand still here!).

With your easy-to-handle boat requiring no licence,
you are very much at the helm. But if you would
prefer not to think about anything, a driver can
accompany you on your journey. In all cases, the
comfort inside the boat is second to none.
The Enchanting Canal
Between Champagne and Burgundy, discover this canal
as it crosses Haute-Marne from north to south.
Among all the works of men, canals are among the most
mysterious... The canal between Champagne and Burgundy
links two watersheds, the Seine in the North and the Rhône
in the south, across the high Langres Plateau, a remarkable
piece of engineering. The geographical curiosity of the canal
is set off by the technical exploit which can be admired
through a whole series of different infrastructure works.
It takes 7 days of sailing to go from Vitry-le-François to the
Saône.
Along the 224 km of canal, there is no shortage of places to
take in food supplies and fuel. Last of all, to ensure that you
can share your emotions, mobile phone coverage is present
almost everywhere. Otherwise, you only have to walk 100 m
to pick up the network...

Bourbonne-les-Bains is nestled in a hilly region that stretches as far as the Vosges.
The city enjoys a mild micro-climate which meant that it was once
