Mode of Training
The two major parts of training, the theoretical and practical
parts carry almost the same weight. The former part is
conducted in the college class rooms while the later is carried
out in the well equipped college workshops and in industries
as industrial training. At the end of each academic year,
students attend industrial training for duration of up to the
maximum of two months. The main purpose of the industrial
practical training is to give the students a chance to apply
what she/he has learnt at the college in industry and to make
him/her appreciate the real working environment which he/
she will experience after completing his studies.

The computer lab assists training in various application
software such as Basic computer applications, Window
operating system, Word processing, Spreadsheet, Database,
Presentations, Internet applications and computer networking.
Other field specific applications include Auto CAD, Matlab
and Programming language (C++).

Introduction
Transportation Engineering Department was established
in 1991 under the agreement of technical cooperation
between the governments of United Republic of Tanzania
and Federal Republic of Germany. The aim of establishing the
department is to train technician in the field of transportation
specifically road construction and maintenance. Currently the
Department is accredited by NACTE to award an Ordinary
Diploma in Transportation Engineering. Besides the training
the department provides consultancy on testing
What is Transportation Engineering?
The Transportation Engineering is an emerging field of
specialisation in Tanzania. It encompasses a wide range of
knowledge covering the planning, design, construction and
management of transportation facilities. The graduate is
expected to supervise the construction work such as roads,
airport pavements, bridges, track laying, docks and harbours.
Also the graduate is expected to carryout tests on soils and
road materials to determine their suitability for road works.
The graduate should be able to undertake survey for road
works, bridges and railway projects. The programme aims on
providing skills and knowledge that are vital to employers
and other stakeholders, to entice self-realisation and skill that
enable graduates to be self employed.

Why Study Transportation Engineering at ATC?
Transportation Engineering graduates have a number of skills,
which are widely sought after in today’s modern business
and industrial world such as: Appropriate technical practical
skills in constructing and maintaining Civil and Transportation
structures; A thorough understanding of the fundamental
principles associated with engineering applications; A thorough
understanding of the IT skills associated with engineering
applications; and the ability to communicate with members
of an organization at the same, higher and lower levels of
expertise or responsibility.

Engineering
The programmes are offered in a modularized structure and
complete in terms of coverage of specific competences of
a qualification. The modules are administered in semesters.
The students attain practical training on road construction
and maintenance sites in the country. They also get practical
training in skills such as masonry, brick laying, carpentry
and joinery our college workshops. Moreover, the soil and
Bitumen laboratory provides the students with the necessary
skills and knowledge to carry out the most common.

Graduates have found employment in Engineering Design

engineering to general software design & development), and
in the Public Sector (e.g. TANROADS, Municipals, District
Councils)
