Cover Story
Pipat Paniangvait
40 years “MAMA”
with annual sales of 10,000 million baht
Influential Thai Brand….Maintaining
Consumer Popularity
Close your eyes and imagine yourself walking in every
household kitchen, what is the product that you are frequently
bought and stored in the kitchen for a ready-to-eat meal?
If you were a shop owner whether it is a small kiosk, minimart or a big supermarket, in the
food division, what is the product that every shop always stores in the shelf for their customers to
purchase?
I believe that one of the answers would be “Mama”, instant noodles that stay with Thai
consumer over 40 years. Nowadays, “MAMA” acquires the share of more than 50% of instant
noodles market in Thailand.
“Pipat Paniangvait” .
ating back to 2515, the year that “Thai
President Food Co,.Ltd” founded, the
manufacture of “MAMA” instant noodles was
not the first instant noodles brand but was ranked as
No.4 in the market. They came behind “SANWA”
Japan Noodles, “YUM YUM” Taiwan Noodles and
“WAI WAI” of the Thai food producer.
Although, “MAMA” was a newbie in the market
but yet “MAMA” has shown the ability to improve
in all aspects including quality, taste, manufacturing
standard, packaging, technology used in production
process, sales and marketing and etc. It has
continually remained as a leading brand in the market
for a decade.
30 years ago, MAMA was born under the control
of Sahapat Group by the vision of Dr. Tiam
Chokwattana, the founder of Sahapat Group, who led
his family to become a powerful conglomerate until
today.
At that time, Sahapat was well-known as one of
the strongest Thai commodity manufacturer that could
cope with other giant multi-national companies such
as Colgate, Uniliver and etc. However, Sahapat did
not have many food products. Then, Sahapat was
introduced to the President Enterprise Company from
Taiwan by Khun Jane Siriwong who was the initiator
of instant noodles production project and has a good
relationship with Dr. Thiam Chokwattana for a long
period of time. So, the President Enterprise Company
invited Sahapat to join a partnership with them.
Thai President Food was established under the
cooperation among 3 parties which were Taiwan
(owner of “know how”, an instant noodle
manufacturer), Mr. Jane Siriwong, the initiator and
manager of Bangkok Bank at Ratchawong Branch
and Sahapat which was responsible for sales and
34 THAI COMMERCE
Cover Story
marketing under their capacity and availability in
hand.
At the beginning, although MAMA seemed to be
a perfect cooperating among production, financial and
marketing, but in reality it was not as smooth as it
should be. It was because they faced many problems
and obstacles. Firstly, the price of “MAMA” at that
time was about two baht per package, comparing to
cost of a meal which was less than one baht, and
also it was new and unfamiliar products for Thai
market.
Second problem was the organization management.
The production line was managed by Taiwanese
while sales and marketing was managed by Sahapat.
At the first age, Mr. Tongjane Siriwong, son of Mr.
Jane Siriwong, was a Managing Director and Mr.
Jane was in charge of financial and organization
images. However, the cooperation among all parties
was not relatively smooth in which led to the crisis
at that time.
Mr. Pipat Paniangvait, Managing Director of Thai
President Food Plc was one of the key persons who
turn “MAMA” to be the influential product
maintaining popularity among Thai consumers. We
could say that “MAMA” has been gone through
many challenges and obstacles which can be a
business model or case study for other entrepreneurs,
marketing officers as well as students to learn the
idea, the management system and the organization
that turns their obstacles to be a success.

Summary of the lesson from their experiences
First, the founder did not know very much about
the actual market so their expectation would be
higher than it should be. Due to MAMA was quite
new for the market and people were not familiar
with their products, so product responses were not so
good and this led to funding and financial liquidity
problems.
The amount of capital at first was only 3 millions
bath which were spent on purchasing property,
machines, and plantation. When the sales did not
reached the target, the financial liquidity was halted.
“MAMA” was two baht per package while
noodles on the street cost less than one baht. The
products that consumers was familiar with came with
the lower price compared to the new fresh higher
price and not well-known products. The returns on
sale did not meet their expectation. According to
this situation the sales and the production line started
to put a blamed on each other, and this was a basic
thing when running businesses.
One important thing is a language barrier, if you
want to do business and investment in Taiwan then
you should know how to speak Taiwanese.
It can be said that, communication is very
important. It needs the knowledge of at least two
languages or as good as three or more to dealing the
business with foreigners.
Mr. Pipat realized that these undesired experiences
at the beginning were good lessons for MAMA. The
ancient Chinese phrase said “when you are poor you
solve it and when you solve it, you will get better”
so, this brought the enormous change to MAMA and
continue to serve consumers as a most reliable brand
until today.
In terms of financial, in order to increase
liquidity, the company raised the amount of capital to
6 millions bath from the share holders and Taiwan
company was not interested in and finally retreated.
Therefore, the proportion of share was 100%
dominated by Thais. When they made it through the
crisis, they increased their production line to respond
to the demand of market and register to increase
capital investment. At the present time, Thai President
Food Plc have authorized capital amount of 240
millions bath but payment called only 180 millions
bath and in 1978 the company registered to the stock
market.
In production sector, after the Taiwanese has
withdrawn, we have to rely on ourselves by
innovating new flavors, beside the chicken soup
flavor learnt from the Taiwanese. The new flavors
were minced pork flavor, Tom Yum Kung flavor,
and pottage tom yum kung flavor. Those three
flavors are popular among Thais and foreigners.
In the marketing sector, no one can compare to
Mr. Thiam Chokwattana who is regarded as a master
of marketing in Thailand. He used strategies to create
a brand “MAMA” and made it become well-known
in all over the country by demonstrating to the
market and community about how to cook in order
to give people a taste and also use the media to
advertise both in televisions and radios.
For sale sectors, Sahapat is one of the Thai
companies having a lot of linkages and channels of
distribution which helps “MAMA” to be able to
distribute their products to almost 100% of grocery
stores.
According to the ASEAN Free Trade Agreement
(AFTA) which has been now activated since 1st
January 2010. The AFTA makes ASEAN becomes
tariff-free and it will completely open in 2015. This
means free flow of capital and workforces which
could be an opportunity, as well as barrier at the
same time, for Thai entrepreneurs. Thailand has 60
millions of population, however, the ASEAN
population is about 580 millions. Under this
circumstance, we could sell products about ten times
higher. On the other hand, our trade partners could
bring their products to sell against us too.
Therefore, if you have a good preparation and
capability to cope with this condition, then you
would have a good chances to expand your
businesses. On the other hand, if you lack of
competitive ability, you could face many following
problems.
The competitive abilities are consist of
manufacturing technology, capital management and the
machines efficiency that can reduce costs of
production, costs of energy consumption and also
reduce the number of labour forces. The products
coming out with a high quality and low cost, would
meet the customer needs and would automatically
create their own brand and trademark. Finally, they
must have a good relationship with both domestic
and international trade partners.
Compared to the neighboring countries, Thailand’s
economy is not much different in size but the types
of business are different. Some product categories are
the same such as agricultural products including rice,
tapioca, canes and rubber tree. If Thailand needs to
be the leader of market, we have to ensure the better
quality of products and cost saving. Thai government
needs to support agricultural industries and specialize
them as well as developing to foster our strengths in
order to be the world’s cuisine hub.
If our product quality and price could compete
with the rival, what we have to do next is to seek
for the appropriate trade partners which is going to
be the targeted group that we need to focus on.
Besides stimulating the purchasing rate in the country,
the border trades with neighboring countries also have
to be supported with fairness and without political
agenda, because political issues should not be a trade
obstacle. ASEAN countries are the strategic trade
partners that we have to get in and seeking
cooperation with them.
Another partner that we should focus on is China,
due to it has huge purchasing power with 1300
millions of population. Moreover, Thailand and China
has a close relation like relatives, having an
appropriate trade location. If transportation between
two countries is improved, the trade between two
countries will significantly improve as well.
However, do not forget to protect the domestic
market from foreign investment, including the price
competition in order to maintain international standard
of our products to complete with our competitors.
Nowadays, “MAMA” not only fulfills Thai market
needs but they are also exporting to 50 countries.
Also, investing in the production plant in Myanmar
and Cambodia, selling the “Know-How” techniques to
Nepal, selling their old machines and production
techniques to Sri-Lanka, investing in paper cup in
ChernTu, Sichuan, China as well as planning to
continue its expansion to Nanxun in the east of
China. Finally, all above these are the story of
“MAMA KINGDOM” for almost four decades.
