doorway. Southern Californians may
opt to leave the area covered but open,
because a small heater would be
enough to make the space usable
during the winter. The second reason
it makes sense for a Pacific
Northwesterner to enclose the aft deck
is because the flybridge is open for
those days when you’d rather be
outside.
An Inside Look
INSIDE & OUT
The salon is the second gathering
spot. A large L-shaped settee is to
starboard, with a fold-out high-low
teak table. The Inbergs have two
reclining, rotating chairs to port, but
a small sofa is an option. A flat-screen
TV is built into the salon-side face of
the galley’s half wall. That half wall,
thanks to one of Jan’s tweaks, is 3
inches farther into the salon than it
is on other Krogen 48s. Jan wanted
a full-size oven in the galley, which
wasn’t on the options list. But the folks
at Kadey-Krogen took a look, decided
that a mere 3 inches would
accommodate the bigger appliance
and made the adjustment. The galley
also has a full-size refrigerator/freezer,
a microwave, Corian (or granite)
countertops, and optional dishwasher,
trash compactor and ice-maker,
which Ron and Jan loaded up on.
They knew this wasn’t going to be a
weekend galley.
A large bookcase and storage unit
sits forward of the salon and to port
of the galley, at the base of the steps
to the pilothouse and at the top of
the steps to the staterooms and heads.
Belowdecks is the master stateroom
in the forepeak. Its queen-size
island bed sits atop a large storage
area, with pneumatic lift struts. The
room has a bureau and three hanging
lockers — hers, hers and hers on
this particular boat. The en suite
head has a VacuFlush toilet with a
status panel and a molded fiberglass
shower enclosure with a bi-fold door,
as does the second head. The
washer and dryer are located in the
second head.
The starboard-situated second
stateroom doubles as an office or den.
It has a desk and a large settee that
converts to a double berth. It also
TESTER’S OPINION
“There is a lot of boat
packed into a 48-foot
hull. The layout
options are such that
the boat should
appeal to boaters up
and down the West
Coast, whether
they’re looking for an
open, airy vessel in
the warmer climates,
or they need more
indoor space to make
the boat year-round
usable.”
A look at the 48 from the salon,
galley, pilothouse, head and master
stateroom.
