<strong>Diploma</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Health</strong> & <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Care</strong> (<strong>NVQ</strong> <strong>Level</strong> 2)<br />

Course Overview<br />

The Apprenticeship framework is made up several parts:<br />

1. <strong>Diploma</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Health</strong> and <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Care</strong> <strong>Level</strong> 2<br />

2. Key Skills <strong>in</strong> Application of Number and Communications at <strong>Level</strong> 1<br />

3. Employers’ Rights and Responsibilities Workbook (ERR)<br />

4. Personal Learn<strong>in</strong>g and Th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g Skills (PLTS)<br />

There are n<strong>in</strong>e mandatory units that all <strong>Level</strong> 2 Apprentices must study, that<br />

will amount to a total of 24 credits along with Optional units to <strong>in</strong>crease credit<br />

score, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

• Introduction to communication <strong>in</strong> health, social care or children’s<br />

young people sett<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

• Introduction to equality and <strong>in</strong>clusion<br />

• Introduction to personal development<br />

• Introduction to duty of care<br />

• Pr<strong>in</strong>ciples of safeguard<strong>in</strong>g and protection <strong>in</strong> health and social care<br />

• Contribution to health and safety<br />

• Handl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formation <strong>in</strong> health and social care sett<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

To follow on from the mandatory units there are three different pathways that<br />

Apprentices can take; Learn<strong>in</strong>g Disability Pathway, General Pathway and<br />

Dementia Pathway.<br />

Learn<strong>in</strong>g Disability Pathway<br />

Mandatory Unit:<br />

• Understand the context of support<strong>in</strong>g an <strong>in</strong>dividual with learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

disabilities<br />

Learn<strong>in</strong>g disability competence units:<br />

• Support person centred th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g and plann<strong>in</strong>g<br />

• Provide active support<br />

The is followed by five optional units:<br />

• Introductory awareness of models of disability<br />

• Pr<strong>in</strong>ciples of support<strong>in</strong>g an <strong>in</strong>dividual to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> personal hygiene<br />

• Support participation <strong>in</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g and development activities<br />

• Support care plan activities<br />

• Meet food safety requirements when provid<strong>in</strong>g food and dr<strong>in</strong>k.


General Pathway<br />

• Introduction to personalisation <strong>in</strong> social care<br />

• Pr<strong>in</strong>ciples of support<strong>in</strong>g an <strong>in</strong>dividual to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> personal hygiene<br />

• Introductory awareness of sensory loss<br />

Optional competence units:<br />

• Contribute to monitor<strong>in</strong>g the health of <strong>in</strong>dividuals affected by health<br />

conditions<br />

• Support care plan activities<br />

• Support <strong>in</strong>dividuals to eat and dr<strong>in</strong>k<br />

• Support <strong>in</strong>dividuals to personal care needs<br />

• Move and position <strong>in</strong>dividuals <strong>in</strong> accordance with their plan of care<br />

• Meet food safety requirement when provid<strong>in</strong>g food and dr<strong>in</strong>k for<br />

<strong>in</strong>dividuals<br />

• Support <strong>in</strong>dividuals to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> personal hygiene<br />

Dementia<br />

Mandatory unit:<br />

• Dementia Awareness<br />

Competence unit:<br />

• Understand and implement a person-centred approach to the care<br />

and support of <strong>in</strong>dividuals with dementia<br />

• Equality, diversity and <strong>in</strong>clusion <strong>in</strong> dementia care practise<br />

• Understand and enable <strong>in</strong>teraction and communication with<br />

<strong>in</strong>dividuals with dementia<br />

• Approach to enable rights and choices for <strong>in</strong>dividuals with dementia<br />

whilst m<strong>in</strong>imis<strong>in</strong>g risks<br />

The Apprentice must achieve all the required units with<strong>in</strong> the specified<br />

qualification structure. To pass a unit the Apprentice must:<br />

• Achieve all the specified learn<strong>in</strong>g outcomes<br />

• Meet all the assessment criteria by provid<strong>in</strong>g sufficient and valid<br />

evidence for each criterion<br />

• Show that the evidence is their own<br />

Entry Requirement<br />

No formal requirements are required, however, Apprentices must be work<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> the <strong>Health</strong> and <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Care</strong> Industry and be able to demonstrate basic<br />

levels of literacy and numeracy


Assessment<br />

An assessor will work with the Apprentice on a one to one basis and/or<br />

group basis. Apprentices will be visited each month at work and will also be<br />

able to contact the assessor between visits.<br />

Duration<br />

Up to 18 months, part time<br />
