Dear PTF,
The University of La Verne is pleased with the teaching that you and other dedicated part-time
instructors contribute to ULV’s mission and goals. Since you are currently an Adjunct Professor, you
are aware of La Verne’s promotion system for part-time faculty. At present this promotion process
only awards recognition, but in the near future we hope to link it to compensation.
“To be eligible to receive the title of Senior Adjunct Professor,” La Verne’s faculty have stated, “an
Adjunct Professor must have taught a minimum of eight years at ULV as defined in §IXE.2a (four
additional years beyond those required for appointment to Adjunct Professor), and must possess
either the appropriate terminal degree (as defined in §IIB.1b) or an appropriate master’s degree
plus a minimum of ten years of outstanding professional experience. For this purpose ‘outstanding
professional experience’ is defined as going beyond the application of up-to-date theory in
the practice of the profession and developing a reputation outside of the workplace as demonstrated
by such things as consulting, seminar or conference presentations, publications, and/or
activities in professional associations.” A “year” is defined in §IXE.2a as “two or more courses
taught each academic year plus summer.” The definitions for “the appropriate terminal degree”
for each discipline (§IIB.1b) are enclosed.
According to our records, you are eligible to apply for promotion to Senior Adjunct Professor. If you
are interested in applying, please contact your department chair (if you teach on campus in La Verne)
or your director (if you teach off campus). The deadline for you to complete your part of your file is
August 15, 2003. Here are the items that you must submit to the chair or director by August 15, if
you wish to be considered for promotion to Senior Adjunct Professor:
1. Current syllabi from your ULV courses.
2. Exams, papers, and other performance assessments from each different course you teach.
3. Student evaluations for the courses you taught in the last six terms.
4. A current curriculum vitae (or résumé), giving particular attention to your professional
experience and professional contributions.
5. A brief report discussing what you have done and are doing to improve your teaching and to
stay current in your field.
Once your chair or director has received these items from you, he or she will add additional information
as needed and forward the file to my office, Quality Management. A collegial review of one
of your classes might be scheduled, if a recent in-class review is not available, and your file will be
given to the academic department in which you teach for review. After the departmental review,
your file and application will be considered by the Faculty Personnel Committee. Those part-time

faculty who are promoted to Senior Adjunct Professor will be recognized at the Part-Time Faculty
Inservice on Saturday, November 15, 2003 in La Fetra Auditorium at the central campus of the
University.
