Bendigo Art Gallery is pleased to host the 12th<br />

Contemporary Australian Silver & Metalwork Award<br />

in partnership with BUDA Historic Home and<br />

Garden, Castlemaine.<br />

The Contemporary Australian Silver & Metalwork<br />

Award is a unique national biennial exhibition with<br />

multiple acquisitive and non-acquisitive prizes,<br />

showcasing contemporary silver and metalwork<br />

practice in Australia. The award exhibition was<br />

established in 1988 by BUDA Historic Home and<br />

Garden to commemorate the significant contribution<br />

to Australian silversmithing by the noted colonial<br />

silversmith, Ernest Leviny. The Leviny family lived at<br />

BUDA for more than 118 years.

Terms & conditions<br />

1. The Contemporary Australian Silver<br />

& Metalwork Award is a nationally<br />

acclaimed biennial award exhibition<br />

founded by BUDA Historic Home and<br />

Garden, Castlemaine. The award has<br />

multiple prizes in both professional and<br />

student award categories.<br />

2. In 2013, the award is being conducted<br />

by Bendigo Art Gallery (the Gallery).<br />

The professional award categories are<br />

open to all Australian artists (citizens<br />

of Australia or residents for at least 12<br />

months). The student award categories<br />

are open to all current and recently<br />

graduated students (2011 and 2012)<br />

enrolled in or recently graduated from<br />

an accredited jewellery or silversmithing<br />

course.<br />

3. The award exhibition will be held at<br />

Post Office Gallery, a satellite space of<br />

Bendigo Art Gallery, at 51 – 67 Pall<br />

Mall, Bendigo from 29 June – 28 July<br />

2013.<br />

4. Works chosen for the exhibition will<br />

be pre-selected from digital images.<br />

Artists may enter a maximum of two<br />

works. Works must be the original<br />

work of the artist. Work must be<br />

designed and produced in the last two<br />

years. If selected, one of the two works<br />

submitted for pre-selection must be<br />

available for display.<br />

5. The judges’ decision will be final and<br />

no correspondence will be entered into.<br />

6. The judges will select one winning<br />

work in each award category. The judges<br />

reserve the right not to select any work<br />

if works are not, in their opinion of<br />

sufficient merit. The Gallery has the<br />

right to refuse to display any entry.<br />

7. Entries must be physically received by<br />

Bendigo Art Gallery by 4pm Friday 1<br />

February 2013. Entries received after<br />

4pm Friday 1 February 2013 will not<br />

be accepted. Entries must consist of<br />

no more than two digital images (one<br />

image per work entered supplied on<br />

disk), curriculum vitae (two pages<br />

maximum), entry form and entry fee.<br />

Emailed entries will not be accepted.<br />

8. Entry fee is $30 per professional<br />

artist and $15 per student. Entry<br />

fee is non-refundable and covers<br />

administration and handling. Any entry<br />

not accompanied by payment of entry<br />

fee will be ineligible. Payment may<br />

be made by cheque or credit card to<br />

Bendigo Art Gallery. A receipt will not<br />

be mailed unless requested. Envelopes<br />

must be addressed with: Contemporary<br />

Australian Silver & Metalwork Award.<br />

Artists’ CVs and images will not be<br />

returned unless a stamped self-addressed<br />

envelope is provided.<br />

9. Employees of Bendigo Art Gallery, City<br />

of Greater Bendigo and, the organisers,<br />

and members of their immediate family<br />

are ineligible to enter.<br />

10. Digital images should be less than two<br />

megabytes (when opened), saved as<br />

jpegs and able to be opened on PC<br />

format. Jpegs must be saved on CD with<br />

the following details as the file name:<br />

artist surname_artist firstname_title.<br />

jpg (Example: leviny_ernest_bracelet.<br />

jpg). Slides, photographs, photocopied<br />

reproductions, emailed images or any<br />

other representations of the work<br />

will not be accepted.<br />

11. All artists will be informed of preselection<br />

outcome by 1 March 2013.<br />

The Gallery will retain selected artists<br />

visual material until the close of the<br />

exhibition.<br />

12. The Gallery will not be responsible for<br />

any loss or damage suffered to any work<br />

in its possession or under its control and<br />

each entrant shall indemnify the Gallery<br />

against loss or damage suffered to his or<br />

her work. Works will not be insured by<br />

the Gallery.


13. The Gallery will not be responsible<br />

for the sale of artworks. Any enquiries<br />

regarding sale of work from the general<br />

public will be directed to the artist and<br />

/or dealer.<br />

14. Works can be delivered to Bendigo<br />

Art Gallery from Monday 11 March<br />

– Thursday 28 March 2013. Works<br />

must be delivered to the Gallery for<br />

professional photography by no later<br />

than 4pm Thursday 28 March 2013.<br />

Artworks will be stored at Bendigo<br />

Art Gallery until the installation of the<br />

exhibition. After the exhibition, artists<br />

are responsible for the collection of<br />

their work between Monday 12 August<br />

– Friday 30 August 2013.<br />

15. All works must be well packed and<br />

clearly labelled with artist’s name,<br />

address, title of work and installation<br />

requirements included (if applicable).<br />

Works must be packed in such a<br />

way that the work can be unpacked<br />

efficiently and repacked in the same<br />

way for return at the end of the<br />

exhibition. It is intended that the works<br />

selected will be shown in exhibition<br />

at Post Office Gallery. Should space<br />

prevent the display of work, the Gallery<br />

will advise the entrant.<br />

16. All entries selected for the exhibition<br />

must be available for continuous<br />

display at Post Office Gallery for the<br />

period of the exhibition. Artists and/<br />

or representatives cannot remove an<br />

artwork from display prior to 28 July<br />

2013. All artwork must be collected no<br />

later than 4pm Friday 30 August unless<br />

return postage or alternate delivery at<br />

the artists cost is specified.<br />

17. Artists selected for exhibition will allow<br />

their works to be reproduced in print<br />

and electronic media in the advertising<br />

and promotion of the exhibition and<br />

in any catalogue connected with the<br />

exhibition. The Gallery reserves the<br />

right to reproduce the winning entry in<br />

publications in relation to the Award.<br />

18. Freight of artwork. Artists are<br />

responsible for the delivery and<br />

collection of their artwork from the<br />

Gallery. Artwork will not be accepted<br />

unless delivered and returned free<br />

of all freight and other charges. If an<br />

artist should fail or omit to remove<br />

their work from the Gallery between<br />

Monday 12 August – Friday 30 August<br />

2013, the Gallery, after sending a<br />

notice by post to the artist at the last<br />

known address of its intention to sell or<br />

otherwise dispose of such work, or in<br />

the event of no address being known<br />

to the Gallery, then one month after<br />

advertising such notice of intention<br />

in a newspaper, may sell such work.<br />

After deducting the incidental costs of<br />

the sale, the balance will be held for<br />

the artist. Provided however, that in<br />

the event of such work being in the<br />

opinion of the Gallery unsaleable, then<br />

the Gallery may in lieu of selling the<br />

same, destroy or otherwise dispose in<br />

such a manner as it may deem fit and<br />

thereafter the gallery shall be under no<br />

liability whatever to the artist in respect<br />

of any work so destroyed or disposed<br />

of. All care will be taken, however, the<br />

gallery will not be responsible for any<br />

loss or damage caused. Freight and<br />

insurance is the responsibility of the<br />

artist.<br />

19. Following the award exhibition at Post<br />

Office Gallery, selected works will be<br />

chosen to go on display at Arts Centre<br />

Melbourne. Exhibitors whose work is<br />

selected for the Arts Centre display will<br />

be informed during the exhibition at<br />

Post Office Gallery between 29 June –<br />

28 July 2013.<br />

20. All personal information gathered by<br />

the Gallery will be used solely for the<br />

purpose of administering the Award.
