There are four types of established ur<strong>in</strong>ary <strong>in</strong>cont<strong>in</strong>ence<br />

that are most common <strong>in</strong> women:<br />

<strong>Stress</strong> ur<strong>in</strong>ary <strong>in</strong>cont<strong>in</strong>ence: the un<strong>in</strong>tentional<br />

release or leakage of ur<strong>in</strong>e dur<strong>in</strong>g sudden movements<br />

such as cough<strong>in</strong>g, sneez<strong>in</strong>g, laugh<strong>in</strong>g and exercis<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Urge <strong>Incont<strong>in</strong>ence</strong>: the sudden, <strong>in</strong>tense urge to<br />

ur<strong>in</strong>ate, followed by a loss of ur<strong>in</strong>e.You may feel like you<br />

never get to the bathroom fast enough, you may wake<br />

several times a night with the strong urge to ur<strong>in</strong>ate.<br />

Mixed <strong>Incont<strong>in</strong>ence</strong>: occurs when women have<br />

symptoms of both stress and urge <strong>in</strong>cont<strong>in</strong>ence.<br />

Overflow <strong>Incont<strong>in</strong>ence</strong>: occurs when the bladder<br />

doesn’t completely empty. It may be caused by<br />

dysfunctional nerves or a blockage <strong>in</strong> the urethra that<br />

prevents the flow of ur<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

The right treatment for you will depend on the type of<br />

ur<strong>in</strong>ary <strong>in</strong>cont<strong>in</strong>ence that you have.This brochure deals with<br />

stress ur<strong>in</strong>ary <strong>in</strong>cont<strong>in</strong>ence, the most common type <strong>in</strong><br />
