We recognize the trust you place in us when you entrust your charitable assets with
The Seattle Foundation and know how important our stewardship is to you and
the causes you care about most. As a prudent steward, we have an investment
management philosophy that honors our commitment to our fundholders and our
shared goal of building a healthy community. Our “total return” approach to investing
reflects our desire to build a long-term partnership of powerful, rewarding philanthropy.
All funds established at The Seattle Foundation are managed as provided by the
Investment Policy Statement approved by the Board of Trustees. The Investment
Committee oversees investment activities and selects and monitors investment
The Balanced Pool is our primary investment
pool. It reflects a “total return” approach to
investing and is focused on maximizing income
commensurate with the safety of principal,
thereby seeking capital growth over the long
term. As the best performing asset class varies
from year to year, this diversified portfolio
benefits fundholders by maintaining consistent
exposure to all asset categories.
To support a giving horizon of three to five
years, this pool invests primarily in fixedincome
securities and includes a relatively
small allocation to equities. Designed to avoid
volatility, this fund provides lower returns than
the Balanced Pool.
For fundholders with a time of less than two
years, the Short-Term Pool is typically invested
in money-market funds and short-term bonds.
It is not intended to produce any long-term
investment returns.
The Seattle Foundation accepts outside management of donor advised funds and
supporting organizations with $750,000 or more in assets. Evaluation of the fund
manager and approval by The Seattle Foundation are required. Funds remain assets of
The Seattle Foundation and outside managers are retained to manage on our behalf.
