2008 Anne V. Farrell
Leadership Grant
Since 1995, The Seattle Foundation has awarded the annual
Anne V. Farrell Leadership Grant to an organization or group
of organizations addressing a pressing community issue in
an innovative way. In 2008, the Foundation supported the
Workforce Development Council of Seattle-King County
for its Minority Business and Youth Alliance Project, which
links business, the juvenile court and community-based
organizations together to help young offenders of color
progress along pathways to post-secondary education, job
training and mentoring, and living wage employment.
The Seattle Foundation
Emergency Relief Fund
The Emergency Relief Fund was established to respond to
natural disasters locally, nationally and internationally. In
2008, Cyclone Nargis devastated the coast of Myanmar
(also known as Burma) in Southeast Asia. In the same month,
a 7.9-magnitude earthquake struck the Sichuan province
in China. Many donors responded to these disasters by
contributing to The Seattle Foundation’s Emergency Relief
Fund. This fund supported organizations already established
in these countries to build temporary shelters and schools
in China, as well as provide emergency relief and recovery
efforts in Myanmar.
Community Leadership Fund
The Community Leadership Fund helps support our community
dialogues and convenings. The Seattle Foundation believes
community foundations best serve their communities if they
work in ways that recognize the larger context in which
their communities exist. We are always looking for ways to
use different tools to enhance our work, particularly seeking
to bring underrepresented voices into these discussions, to
spearhead collaboration across sectors and organizational
lines, and to encourage discussions across the region’s
various municipalities.
Scholarship Fund
The Scholarship Fund supports King County residents
who demonstrate financial need, outstanding community
involvement and academic promise. It is open to all types of
students—from high school seniors to current college students,
returning students and “non-traditional” students. Recipients
may use scholarships at public community colleges, four-year
colleges or universities, trade or vocational schools. The first
awards were made from the Scholarship Fund in 2008.
Poisoned Waters Documentary
Poisoned Waters is a PBS Frontline documentary that aired
in spring 2009 and featured Puget Sound and Chesapeake
Bay as “the best and worst in America’s environmental cause.”
In the case of Puget Sound, it is the “best” because of the
green political climate in Washington state and the “worst”
because the Sound is the most contaminated estuary on the
Pacific Coast. Pulitzer Prize-winning, former New York Times
reporter and editor, and Emmy award-winning producer/
correspondent Hedrick Smith produced Poisoned Waters.
