Arts and Humanities<br />
English Units 1-4<br />
English Unit 1<br />
The focus of this unit is on the reading of a range of<br />
texts, particularly narrative and persuasive texts, in<br />
order to comprehend, appreciate and analyse the<br />
ways in which texts are constructed and interpreted.<br />
Areas of Study<br />
1. Reading and responding: This area of study<br />
includes analysis of ways in which structures and<br />
features are used by authors to construct meaning.<br />
Texts set as the focus should have literary merit, be<br />
worthy of close study and be excellent examples of<br />
form and genre.<br />
2. Creating and presenting: This area of study<br />
focuses on writing which has been informed by<br />
reading a range of texts from the following: a)<br />
Exploring and presenting themes or ideas, b)<br />
Exploring technology and communication and c)<br />
Exploring workplace communication.<br />
3. Using language to persuade: This area of study<br />
focuses on the use of language in the presentation of<br />
a point of view. For example, students identify the<br />
use in the texts of persuasive techniques such as<br />
repetition, symbols, emotive appeals, logical<br />
appeals, omission and vocabulary choice.<br />
OUTCOMES<br />
Outcome 1; On completion of this unit the student<br />
should be able to identify and discuss key aspects of<br />
a set text, and to construct a response in oral or<br />
written form.<br />
Outcome 3: On completion of this unit the student<br />
should be able to identify and discuss, either in<br />
writing and/or orally, how language can be used to<br />
persuade readers and/or viewers.<br />
English UNIT 2<br />
The focus of this unit is on reading and responding to<br />
an expanded range of text types and genres to<br />
analyse ways in which they are constructed and<br />
interpreted. As well there is a focus on the<br />
development of competence and confidence in<br />
creating written, oral or multimodal texts.<br />

OUTCOMES<br />
Outcome 1: On completion of this unit the student<br />
should be able to discuss and analyse how texts<br />
convey ways of thinking about the characters, ideas<br />
and themes, and construct a response in oral or<br />
written form.<br />
Outcome 2: On completion of this unit the student<br />
should be able to create and present texts taking<br />
account of audience, purpose and context.<br />
Outcome 3: On completion of this unit the student<br />
should be able to identify and analyse how language<br />
is used in a persuasive text and to present a<br />
reasoned point of view in an oral or a written form.<br />
Outcome 2: On completion of this unit the student<br />
should be able to create and present texts taking<br />
account of audience, purpose and context.<br />
Assessment<br />
The award of satisfactory completion for a unit is based on a decision that the student has demonstrated<br />
achievement of the set of outcomes specified for the unit. This decision will be based on the teacher’s assessment<br />
of the student’s overall performance on assessment tasks designated for the unit.<br />
