General Mathematics Units 1 & 2
General Mathematics provides courses of study for a
broad range of students and may be implemented in a
number of ways. Some students will not study
Mathematics beyond Units 1 and 2, while others will
intend to study Further Mathematics Units 3 and 4.
material from areas of study which provide a suitable
background for these studies;
• Selected material from an area of study provides a
clear progression in key knowledge and key skills from
Unit 1 to Unit 2.
Others will also be studying Mathematics Methods
OUTCOMES
(CAS) Units 1 and 2 and intend to study Mathematical
Outcome 1: On the completion of this unit the
student should be able to define and explain key
Specialist Mathematics Units 3 and 4 as well. The
concepts, in relation to the topics from the selected
areas of study for Unit 1 and Unit 2 of General
areas of study, and apply a range of related
mathematical routines and procedures.
simulation’, ‘Algebra’, ‘Graphs of linear and non-linear
relations’, ‘Decision and business mathematics’ and
‘Geometry and trigonometry’.
Outcome 2: On completion of this unit the student
should be able to apply mathematical processes in
non-routine contexts and analyse and discuss these
Units 1 and 2 are to be constructed to suit the range
applications of mathematics in at least three of the
of students entering the study by selecting material
areas of study.
from the six areas of study using the following rules:
• For each unit, material covers four or more topics Outcome 3: On completion of this unit the student
selected from at least three different areas of study;
• courses intended to provide preparation for study at
the Units 3 and 4 level should include selection of
and carry out analysis in situations requiring problem
solving, modeling or investigative techniques or
approaches in at least three of the areas of study.
