Mercy Honors Dinner November 10 at Romanello’s South
Nominations for our 2011 Distinguished Alumna and Spirit of Mercy candidates will be accepted until July 15, 2011. Please

The Catherine McAuley Distinguished Alumna Award is presented to an alumna who has distinguished herself as a woman of
faith, knowledge, integrity and compassion – whose accomplishments in all areas of her life – her family, her community, her
career – reflect the legacy and mission of Catherine McAuley.
The Spirit of Mercy Award is presented to a man or woman who exhibits the Spirit of Mercy in their professional and personal
lives. This recipient will be honored for their outstanding commitment and dedication to their community. This person is truly
a minister of mercy who “…live justly, act in tenderness, and with humility journey with their God.” (Micah 6)
We hope you will join us on November 10th, as we present our awards to the 2011 Honorees which will be announced in our
Fall 2011 edition of the Horizons and on our website at www.mtmercy.org in early Fall.

McAuley Gala, April in Paris!
Mount Mercy Academy’s largest fundraiser, the McAuley Gala “April in Paris,” presented
by M&T Bank, was held on Saturday, April 2, 2011 at the school. Over 250 alumnae,
parents, faculty, community leaders, Sisters of Mercy and friends of MMA attended the
dinner and auction.
This year’s theme was “April in Paris.” Guests walked through the Parisian-themed rooms
and bid on over 400 gifts, while an accordion player filled the hallways with the sounds
of Paris. John Murphy from WIVB’s Channel 4 News served as the celebrity auctioneer
and Elizabeth “Betty” (Starkey ’73) Owens was the Emcee for the evening. Both John and
Betty brought excitement and laughter to the crowd, as guests enjoyed a four-course dinner
by Frontier Catering and bid on sixteen live auction packages.
This year’s Call from the Heart was directed towards raising scholarship money for
families in need. Bridget Jackson ’11 spoke to the audience about how her Mercy education
has positively influenced her life and helped to shape her into the bright young woman
she is today. Bridget will attend Oswego State College with a full tuition scholarship in
the fall. If you would like to contribute to the Call from the Heart to help fund Mercy
scholarships, simply fill out the form on the right and return it to MMA with your
donation today!

The 2012 McAuley Gala season kicks off with a barbeque to be held Thursday, August 18, 2011 in
the Mercy Grotto. If you are interested in attending the Kick-Off BBQ, hosting a gift gathering party

I am continually inspired by our Mercy ring and the ripple
effect it has had encircling the globe. Now we would like to
create intersecting professional circles of Mercy from among
our alums and friends of Mercy. Such circles will include Mercy
women of Health and Science, Mercy women of the Legal Profession,
Mercy women of Leadership in the community, Mercy women of Education.
This year, I will be calling together a small group of each circle to focus on our goals:
• To link with one another professionally
• To serve as mentors for present MMA students with
aptitude and interest in your profession

Leah Clancy authored an article featured in April 3rd Destination Education
section of the Buffalo News. Leah is a New York University sophomore who studied
in Florence, Italy and wrote about “The World as Your Classroom.” The article
encourages every student to take advantage of the opportunity to study abroad.
2008
Shaelyn Sullivan was recognized in May at Georgian Court University as Student
Athlete of the Year and received the Outstanding Service Award.

1994
Carrie Walker, a doctoral candidate at University of Nebraska at Lincoln, has been
awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and will travel to Jamaica for 10 months to conduct
her research. She will study archival research to examine how Jamican women
address the status of women through letter writing since independence in 1962.
1992
Dr. Cate Flanagan returned to Mount Mercy in April to address students at the
National Honor Society Induction Ceremony. Dr. Flanagan holds degrees from
Boston University and SUNY at Buffalo. Cate is a licensed psychologist in the
Hematology –Oncology Department at Women and Children’s Hospital of
Buffalo. She lectures often on the difficult topic of death and bereavement and
families coping with chronic illness.

Mary Frances DeNisco has been living in Toronto since 1982 after teaching
English at Lackawanna High School for 6 years. Mary Frances has been teaching
at Loretto College School in Toronto since 1985. After surviving what she calls a
“little bout” with breast cancer she started her motivational speaking business called
HELLO GORGEOUS which combines her love for writing in an effort to inspire
other women and youth.

Marcia O’Neill was awarded the Lay Award of St. Joseph the Worker on May 15th.
Marcia received the award based upon her dedication to her parish St. Aloysius
Gonzaga Church. Marcia’s father, William also received this very same award
some 40 years ago.
